“Tan Assignment”

  • Mother Tongue is about how the author struggles with linguistic identity as well as her mother “broken” English and their mother and daughter relationship.
  • “I am fascinated by language in daily life. Language is the tool of my trade. And I use them all–all the English I grew up with”(PG 1,P2). Tells us that the use of language through the writing is how she expresses herself or getting her point cleared.
  • “My mother has long realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on the phone to pretend I was she. In this guise, I was forced to ask for information or even to complain and yell at people who had been rude to her”(PG 2,P3). Is a line that I relate  to most I have been in this position, where at times I had to pretend to be my mom for certain situations because my mom didn’t speak much of it.
  • “I am not a scholar of English or literature.I cannot give you much more than personal opinions on the English language and it’s variations in this country or others”(PG 1,P1). I feel like she started her writing this way because she wants to let her readers know that this is more of a personal writing that she shares her thoughts about the language.
  • “And at first I wrote using what I thought to be wittily crafted sentences, sentences that would finally prove that I had mastery over the English language”(PG 3, P5).I like how she didn’t give up on her writing skills when she was told by her former boss that her writing was her worst skill but she proved them wrong and mastered the English language.
  • “Apart from what any critic had to say about my writing, I knew I had succeeded where it counted when my mother finished reading my book and gave me her verdict ‘so easy to read’ “(PG 4, last paragraph). Despite what any other person had to say her about her writing she didn’t care about anyone else opinion but her mother because to her that’s all that matters is that her mother finished reading and said it was easy to read.
