Unit 1, Day 1: Monday, Feb. 14th

In Class

• Introduction to Unit 1: Discourse Communities
• Review diagnostic essay
• Review and discuss “Understanding Discourse Communities” by Dan Melzer
• Brainstorm lists of our DCs
• Introduce Project 1
• Choose a DC!

Homework

• Read “Don’t Eat Before Reading This” by Anthony Bourdain and write a response on OpenLab. Make sure to respond to at least one classmate! 
• Make sure you choose a Discourse Community! Begin to think about how/ why it meets the criteria of a Discourse Community! 
• Make sure you added your Discourse Community to the class list here. Check back and make sure that Prof. Coleman approved the DC! Here is the link. 

UNIT 1, Day 2: Wednesday, Feb. 16th

In Class

• PowerPoint
• Begin Project 1: Task 2: Prove It! 
• Listen to “We Come From Small Places: Drums, Oil, and Early Morning Devil Horns – Act 2” 
• Watch: “Op-Docs: What if He Falls? The Terrifying Reality Behind Filming “Free Solo”
• Break into small groups. Discuss how drumming and/ or climbing meet the criteria of a DC. 

Homework

• Complete Project 1: Task 2: Prove It!     OpenLab Link |  Google Docs Link
• Read and annotate ‘Navigating Genres’ by Kerry Dirk. Write a Response to the question on OpenLab. Respond to each other. Engage in a conversation. 

UNIT 1, Day 3: Wed. Feb. 23rd

• Project 1: Task 3: Analyze an Artifact  
• Choose an artifact and analyze it! 

Homework

• Find one artifact from your Discourse Community. The artifact might provide information about the DC’s way to communicate, values or goals, specific lexis, etc.
  • The artifact should provide information about the Discourse Community or be meaningful to the community. 
  • Examples of artifacts: an interview with a member of the community, a song, a speech, an example of the DCs publications (brochure, newsletter), letters, a poem, a book, biography/ autobiography, a tattoo, memes) 
• Fill out the Discourse Community Artifact Analysis worksheet. OpenLab Link | Google Docs Link 

UNIT 1, Day 4: Mon. Feb. 28th

In Class

• PowerPoint
• In small groups, we will review each of your Artifact Analysis sheets
• Project 1: Task 4: Write about It!
• Dig into the Elements of an Analysis (as a genre)
• Strategies for getting started!

Homework

• Project 1 DRAFT DUE Mon. March 7th! Cannot be late if you want me to comment/ review your draft!
