My DC is the Break Through Tech program, particularly its NYC chapter.
They strive to achieve greater equality in the tech community and empower people of underrepresented gender, racial, and religious identities in tech through inclusivity and collaboration.
There are several mechanisms of intercommunication that the DC uses: a website, Google Forms, and Slack. Slack, however, is the most prominent one and is specific to the NYC cohort only.
For the NYC community, the genres that are furthering the goals of the community are Computing Program (with its two-week “Guild” hands-on workshops and a month-long “Sprinternship” – winter internship placement with a tech company), the AI program and its events, and slack channels that promote and share information and job opportunities.
One wouldn’t know what a Sprinternship is without being a part of this discourse community. A lot of the lexis is based on “tech talk” – the language that people in Computing, AI, UX, or Product use.
My DC has a threshold level of expert members: more experienced students have a chance to participate and assist at events, and most mentors are volunteers from well-known tech companies. Once you’ve been through some of the introduction programs, you can proceed to the next level. Both newbies and more experienced participants are welcome to share helpful information with everyone in the community.

City tech students discourse community
All students of city tech are a group of students of one college which is a discourse community. Students have goals such as getting education for their future careers, the best programs at city tech are more technological, engineering, also medical programs such as nursing, radiology, technology and science. City tech students have their form intercommunication either through school website openlab, school email, or even blackboard. City tech students usually use writing, reading, listening type of genres for their educational purposes to study at city tech for their careers. Students at city tech don’t really have specific lexis but they do have specific words or/and names for things such as helpdesk, open lab. There’s no level of experts but there are new students and old students, old students that have been on campus before and new students that are new to campus. There are also students that having been taking online classes at city tech but new to campus due to covid-19 pandemic. City tech students are a part of the discourse community because they have in common to get education in the same college but different majors despite that they all have the same purpose and similar goals educational wise.

Discourse Community: Baking club
1. The broadly agreed-upon set of public goals of my discourse community was to learn how to bake goods and also exchange recipes with one another. The members of the group were all passionate and determined to learn how to bake treats together.
2. The mechanism of intercommunication among the members of my discourse community was through the clubs, where we got together at the host’s house and the members were required to bring a few items to the meets, and we would all communicate by sharing ideas and items to create baked goods.
3. The genre that further helps the goals of my discourse community is a cookbook, which helps us use other recipes.
4. The specific lexis of my DC is talking about the kitchen/ baking tools we use
5. My DC does have a threshold level of expert members, which were the girls that hosted and started the baking club. They had culinary and pastry arts degrees/certificates. They taught most of the lessons and shared many personal experiences in the baking world.

My DC are the College students of NYC
My discourse community, which are college students in NYC, have goals such as passing our classes on time, completing our degree and graduating and to get a job using said degree.
Most college students in NYC use Outlook or Gmail for communication with professors, students or other staff members. Most students will communicate with their peers through social media such as messaging people through Instagram, Snapchat or imessage.
This discourse community includes reading, writing or learning genres such as reading a certain text to finish an assignment which would be submitted on blackboard or other similar websites. Midterms and final exams are given to determine if you will be able to make progress in finishing your degree.
Openlab, Blackboard, and CUNYfirst are examples of specific lexis or other words based on your major. I’m a computer science major and have to know specific texts for programming such as cout, cin or int which are used for coding languages such as c++ and python.
College graduates or people who are close to graduating could be considered as experts since they have either completed there degree or are close and they can provide new students with information they could use such old notes or even tips on being a better student.

Cycling Community
Goals that my cycling club have are completing the full ride that is mapped out. Another goal is to enjoy and socialise with other members.
A mechanism of intercommunication we use as a community is Instagram. Instagram is how we inform each other of the date, time, the distance of the ride, the amount of stops we will have in between etc.
Genres that we would use to help achieve our goals would be different cardio exercises. Having good stamina is important in staying strong through the full rides.
A specific language us riders would use would be hand signals as we ride. Different hand signals such as sticking our left leg out would tell the rider behind us that there is an obstacle on the road and to proceed with caution.
My discourse community has many experts. There are cyclists who have been riding bikes all their life and they’re standing strong at 30 – 35 years old. There are also beginners in our community, as there are new people who join every week and are just getting started on riding a bike.
I like your discourse community, I feel as if there would be lots of similarities in both of our discourse communities.
In my discourse community of mountain bikers and outdoor enthusiasts, we enjoy the great outdoors and how we can ride, race, cruise, and have blast with friends while keeping the environment around us untouched or better off than it was before we got there. Being eco-friendly is part of the goals of this discourse community as well as being fit and overall healthy.
The mechanism we us in our discourse community are websites, social media, google forms, sheets, docs ,drive ,etc to One, get everyone up to speed on when the next ride will be be or if a trail needs a bit of work so its environmentally friendly and safe.
The genres that further help our discourse community are DIY books and forms, Youtube videos, and instructional literater.
The language we commonly use in our discourse community are more like phases like, tempo – to measure the speed or flow of the trail, cake – the perfect texture of dirt which is soft to grip but hard enough to gain speed, berm – a 45 degrees slope that either does a 90 or 180 turn that allows you to turn at top speed. The list can go on but the most common ones are easy to grasp in a day or so.
This discourse community has experts that make it more enjoyable and comfortable for beginners in the community to catch on and learn quickly without getting lost or overwhelmed but others skill and knowledge.

Peruvian Cooking Community
The broadly agreed upon set of pubic goals in my discourse community is learning how to make Peruvian dishes and how to get better at ir as well as exchanging tips and recipes. Another goal wee have is to maintain our culture because there are very few Peruvians in New York, especially in Brooklyn.
The mechanism of intercommunication among the members are whataspp and Facebook. Normally in queens, there are fairs in July when its the Independence Day of Peru . Thats where would gain more members to join . I would say that’s another way of intercommunicating.
The genres that help us further the goals in our discourse community are recipes and cookbooks.
The specific lexis that we use in my discourse community are cooking terms. Cooking terms such as sautéing, braising, blanching, and boiling are all terms used in the kitchen.
The expert members In my dc are my grandma , aunt and mother due to the amount of recipes they know and learned growing up in Peru.

Discourse community: Volunteer at a vet
The agreed-upon set of public goals was to learn about the veterinary career and to get grasp on how the technicians do their job. It can be to help out the doctor in passing tools or learning how to hold the pet a proper way when getting a checkup. Another goal was to gain experience in the career field and to see if it’s something you want to do as a future job.
The mechanism of intercommunication along the members in the community would be a website of the vet, and to communicate through email.
Some genres that can help further our goal in the discourse community can be home pets, medical tools, veterinary.
A special lexis used would be the types of medication given or the procedure and check up that only vets would understand.
Yes, my discourse community expert members would be the doctors and the technicians working at the clinic.
