Write your summary beneath. Your summary should capture what you remember and think is most important to know from the chapter. Some questions to help guide you: What does Anderson say about audience? What three things do readers do when they read something? What six reader-centered strategies does Anderson offer you? Why are ethics important?

What’s most important about your in-class writing is that you put forth the best effort and all of the writing is your own. Put things into your own words unless you want to place something Anderson writes into quotation marks followed by the page number in parentheses like this: Anderson writes, “The fact that readers respond to a communication moment by moment is important to you as a writer” (Anderson 16).

In the time allowed, you might not be able to summarize the entire chapter. Focus on what seems important to you and use the full time for writing. I want this writing to help you improve your writing over time, which means that I will be evaluating these on best effort with attention given to observing change over time.

In this chapter “Communication, Your Career and this book” I found some interesting points such as writing can be done in many different forms and not every writing is the same. For example in college we write research papers , essays, and etc. but at work place we would write to improve a product or increase efficiency in that product. Also communication ethics plays a role in this chapter and shows us how it might affect individuals in different matters. Anderson provides three major sources of guidance which are code of ethics at work place , Personal value that are developed either at home or community , and the employer you may work for may also have an ethic code to run his/her business. Also there are six strategies that Anderson offers in this chapter which are Frist is to identify the specific task the reader will perform using communication. Second is to identify the reader’s attitude that is relevant to communication. Third to help the reader quickly find the information needed to perform the task. Fourthly use easy to read writing style. Fifthly highlight the main points in the reading that will help you in the future and lastly talk to the reader.

The 1st chapter of the book Technical Communication by Paul Anderson, talks about how communication expertise is critical to our success. In every filed communication is an essential part. Without communication we can’t express our ideas and knowledge. This chapter talks about how writing at work differs from writing at school. At school we write to learn and demonstrate knowledge of the particular course material. At work we write to accomplish a task or readers to make a decision. At work environment we make our writing short and simple and exact at point. The author describes, “Learning what your readers need and determining the most helpful way to present this information are the most critical skills in workplace writing” (Anderson 4).
When writing something it is important to focus on the reader. The author advises, “When writing, think constantly about readers” (Anderson, 12). The purpose of our writing is so that readers can understand what we trying to communicate. Therefore, it is important that we satisfy our readers through our writing.
In this chapter, the author not only talks about words to communication but also graphic and visual design can work together with words in technical communications. We communicate globally with people we have never met through internet.
Ultimately, this chapter describes how communication is important in every aspect of our life. Expressing our ideas is very essential to achieve our goals. For example, writing this report to demonstrate my understanding of chapter 1 of this book. My objective will be accomplished when the readers can understand what I communicate through this writing.

The first chapter of the book can be summarized by stating that professional writting must always take into acount the reader is of most importance. When you undergo a communication assignment in the job place, you should consider the reader and how will they interpret and react to your writting. Write as if you were talking to your readers in person. This can help ease a reader into your text so they can begin to welcome your input and advise. The author mentioned that the reader reacts “moment by moment”. (p.14) I understood this as in the case of how various and different each reader can and will recieve the information you produce begining with your very first sentence. Your tone could dictate how the reader reacts as well as your overall message, so take time to examine and analyse your writting while getting to know your target audiance as much as possible. He also mentioned how important it is to use a visual hierchy in order for your readers to follow precisely what you are trying to communicate. State the main points in the begining and follow through with explainations of the most persuasive or informative topics. Another important aspect of writting professionaly is often overlooked and that is to use an easy to read writing style as Anderson calls it. As the chapter came to an end I fiound myself thinking about how neglectful I have been in the past while writting and has left me with a good view on the fields of communication that I must develope further.

Anderson talks about the importance of writing and communication in order to get something across to the reader or readers in the first chapter. Audience can vary from people in your field of study to people in the managerial and even outside audience who have no idea the specifics of the work but they need to know what it is you’re doing in the broader scope. It is important to understand the audience in order to eliminate unnecessary or verbose topics which the audience either already knows or it is not needed for them to do their job.

Chapter 1 has some very good points that are important when you what to interact with others in a work enviroment. Knowing who your audience is has to be one of the most important. Knowing the age range, ethicnicity, and field you will be presenting to will lead you to the right starting point when gathering and researching information. Having good communication is also another very important skill to have. In today’s society when almost everything is virtual knowing how to communicate to get your point or idea across to a vast audience will determine how well your outcome will be. A person can have the best idea to change a task so that it can be more functional but if he or she can not communicate effectively to the higher ups who make the final decision the idea will simply be looked over as a waste of time in my opinion.

Anderson explains that our class writing focus on one particular reader which is the professor, however our work writing should focus on the reader is or the boss is askin for. he suggests that the introduction of our writing should state what the reader is demanding, and the body paragraph should state excatly what the wrting is about. we shouldnt added more to writing. it should only focus on our objective which is either trying to convince a manager or a boss about a change we want to make in our company or for a specific request

In the first chapter of his book, Technical Communication, Paul Anderson states that there are significant differences between college writing and writing at work. Among these differences, he emphasizes the most important difference, which is a purpose. While the purpose of college writing is to include as much information as possible in order to show a professor how much material a student knows, the purpose of writing at work is only to include the information that is needed for employees to perform a particular task. Furthermore, Anderson identifies two important qualities of writing at work: usefulness and persuasiveness, where the persuasiveness is the most complex and difficult quality to achieve. To do so, Anderson states, the writer should always think about her or his readers because when a person reads something he or she follows three basic principles: readers add their own meanings to what they have just read; each reader has different context, and they respond to the text based on that context; and each sentence of the text immediately affect the reader. To deal with these reading principles, Anderson proposes six reader-centered strategies. One of these strategies uses “an easy-to-read writing style”, while other strategy suggests to provide a quick way to find any additional information that is needed for a full understanding of the message. While all these strategies provide an improvement of a writing style that is centered in work, Andersen emphasizes that this writing directly affects people’s lives in one way or another, and since usually there are many different cultures with different ethical values at work, it is important to use language in such a way as not to unnecessary offend or harm anyone.

With lack of communication, most of the talents, skills of an individual is worthless. Anderson talks about in high school and college, we write to one single audience either to professor or instructor. However, in real world and work field most of the writings is addressed to multiple audiences. Furthermore, in this chapters he distributes six reader-centered strategies for writers to keep in mind when addressing to audience. Some of them includes, writing clearly, highlighting the main points, including graphs, drawing, charts, communicating with readers. In this chapter, he mentions the importance of writing ethically.

In Chapter 1, Anderson talks about how important it is to write clearly, so the readers will understand you completely. Writers can’t forget about readers and have to constantly remind themselves about that.
However, it is important to think about readers, the message is important as well. If the reader don’t get your message than your writing had no sense at all. There are also some rules applied to writing correctly. Effectively communication includes itself ethical dimension. Anderson provides us with guidance for communicating ethically. Effective communication at work has to include all of the above.

In chapter one Anderson teaches/reminds us the importance of communication and how we can effectively use this skill not only in our personal lives but also in the work place. What I’ve taken from this chapter is to be considerate of others not only age but also race. Anderson- “Students usually rite to a single reader, the instructor. In contrast, at work you will often prepare communications that address two or more people who differ from one another……”. To me this means we must use a writing language that everyone is capable of understanding.
We must also remember not to bombard our audience with information that is unnecessary. Anderson says- “the two essential qualities of effective writing at work are usefulness and persuasiveness”. We must only give what’s needed despite however much more we may find or feel is needed as not to overwhelm the reader.

For example when working on the company project you will have to communicate precisely and accurately, if failed to do so a reader will interprate the writing in a different way that was not intended. if you are a engineer, doctor, or even scientist a good base on communication and writing is essential. Anderson also introduces strategies in this chapter. The strategy that i found most useful is the the 6 step strategy. I am very interested in studying the rest of the book.

communication is important when a person’s idea and knowledge needs to be presented to others. This can come handy in the person’s professional career to solve problems. To make things work better and less expensive ideas and knowledge should be communicated to others who can learn the information and make the changes with their power.
WRITING A WAY OF COMMUNICATION THAT CAN PRESENT THE GOALS, PROPOSALS, AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF ORGANIZATION OR COMPANIES IN FRONT OF PUBLIC.
IT WILL REQUIRE SKILLS AND NEW WAYS OF THINKING TO SUCCEED WRITING DONE AT WORK. THE PURPOSE FOR WRITING AT WORK WILL BE TO HELP IMPROVE A PRODUCT OR INCREASE EFFICIENCY. THE INFORMATION provided will communicate to consumers if they should buy a product to meet their practical goals. When writing in work people from other nations may also be addressed. To make writing effective visual design is also needed. Organization and individual departments are set up for the writing task people even from other nations.

From Anderson’s Chapter 1 i gained the ideals of Anderson on how my writing should reader-centered in order to get the most production from your writing. he teaches us that our readers can vary from sex, cultures, and backgrounds so we must be ethical when it comes to our writing. Anderson reminds us that our writing must be very useful and persuasive for our reader so we can get what we wanted from the reader. Anderson reminds us that our job is to make the hardest of problems understandable for all readers; no matter how much knowledge they may have or lack. the most important part i gained from Anderson Chapter 1 was that our writing being that it has to be reader-centered what matters most is the readers respond to our writing. we must focus all our attention on ways to influence and assist your readers.

The central point of the chapter can be summarized as follows: keep the context of your writing not only about what the goal is, but also to who is reading it. Different people and different groups have different agendas, and it is important to keep the message clear and consistent to what they are expecting, otherwise you risk confusion or even misinterpretation.

For example, in the Anderson text, a chemist had to write a report on why a certain type of plastic is unsuitable for product distribution. The actual report was written with the boss’s expectation of a simple “yes” or “no” on whether or not the plastic should be used. The exact details of why it’s yes or no were kept very brief but concrete, and the note to contact the chemist for more information was there to show that there was more evidence that could have been stated, but was not necessary since the boss has no use for it and will likely waste time trying to understand it. If the report was being written to another chemist instead, these details would have been more likely to be included, either as a way to repeat and reaffirm these results, or perhaps to send off to materials purchasing or the plastic manufacturer as a way to obtain better materials that can withstand the required tests that the old plastic had failed. If the report was written for the general public, all of the details may have been omitted altogether.

This is why context is very important in communication, even for things as simple as sharing a basic idea or observation. How the idea is presented is just as important as what the idea is.

Anderson said writing is a important way of communication in our careers. Having effective communication enable us to express our ideas and knowledge. In many fields we are required to express our ideas and to persuade them about our ideas. This textbook also make us think about the audience that we are writing to. Before writing we should think about who are we writing for and what are the purpose of our writing. Our writing should be easy to understand and highlights our points that would be it easier for the readers to understand. Overall this chapter gives us a good understand what type of writing will be needed in the real world and how writing is a important part of everyone’s career.

What I found interesting in this chapter is that how workplace writing differs from academic writing, and the informative and helpful user-centric focus that Anderson writes.
According to Anderson, workplace writing serves more pratical purposes than school writing. For example, one communicates in order to help any emplyer improves his or her work goal. Moreover, The person depends on your communication in order to make a decision or take further action regarding a job task. Workplace communication is often a two-way street; it is dependent. On the other hand, academic writing usually is a professor instruct a student to learn the course material. The professor does not need information, knowledge, ideas of a student in order to achieve his or her carrer goal.
Reader-centric focus writing is the most importatnt aspect in Chapter 1 and Anderson writes six strategies. One, writers need to speak with the readers what they are looking out of this communication. For example, what information they need, what purpose does it surve, and how can the writers help in a better way. Second, communicate in a effective and efficient way so the readers can understand and obtain the needed information better. For example, one can use headlines, topic sentences, and lists to guide readers; this not only help

Chapter 1 stresses the importance of communication and writing in your everyday life and career. We right well enough to get in college but going out to the world we must take into consideration the audience or who will be reading your work. There is ways to use your information whether its personal or professional to deliver the object of your writing. It is also very important to pin point your audience so you can write effectively for that audience you are presenting for. This made a lot of sense to me because in conducting a cover letter for a job you wont be as personal as a letter to friend. Chapter 1 cover also the two essential qualities of effective writing at work, which is usefulness and Persuasiveness. Usefulness is when you create or gather enough information that grabs the audience attention giving them valuable information that sticks. Persuasiveness is the ability to influence the audience attitudes and actions based on your useful information your provided.

Chapter 1: Communication, Your Career and This Book

This chapter discusses important points on how to communicate effectively at the workplace and why it is so important.
When writing at the workplace, Anderson explains that these documents will most likely have more than one reader. Your audience will be relying on the information provided to make decisions, changes or get things done in a timely manner. So all writing should be practical and not overloaded with unnecessary information. He also explains different forms of communication like memos, letters, proposals, reports, tables, charts and other graphics. Each one of these forms of communication has their own unique protocols and we must understand this and follow them.
Anderson tells us that writing in the workplace is usually collaborative, where more than one person contributes to the document or co-workers and other staff may be consulted on the document. This can be done in person, over the phone, via email and through Internet networks.
As writers we should understand how a reader interacts with what they’re reading. We should know that a reader uses the information that is already in their heads to process what they’re reading. A reader’s reaction will also depend on their circumstances; like why they’re reading this, why they think you wrote it, what the reader will get out of it personally and how they already feel and think about the writer. It is also important to approach your writing with a reader-centered state of mind because readers are very reactive when reading. If you’re only focused on you, as the writer, it is more likely that the reader will become lost. Since it is the reader that we are writing for then it is important to have the reader in mind that we write.
Anderson explains that right now there are six reader-centered strategies that can be implemented:
    1. Identify what your reader will be using your writing for.
    2. Know what areas of the reader’s position are relevant to what you’re writing.
    3. Give the reader the information they need as early as possible in your writing.
    4. Make your writing simple and easy to understand.
    5. Feature you most persuasive points before lesser persuasive points.
    6. Ask your reader key questions that will help you give them what they need.
Ethics in workplace writing is something that has to be taken seriously. The ideas and commitments of companies can be represented by documents written by employees. This can cause legal problems if these documents aren’t thought out carefully.
