Project 1, Planning

During today’s class, you began working on Project 1’s planning module. Before leaving class, copy-and-paste your planning memo into a comment to this blog post. Also, make sure that you have a Twitter account to use for the assignment, and with that account, you have followed the other students in class and followed the professor @dynamicsubspace.

For our first project there are two possible non fiction events I would consider going with. The first being my person struggle to get back to college and get my Associate’s Degree. The second would be my experience becoming an office manager for H&R Block.

The first narrative would be the outline for the story of my road to success, my failures and setbacks as well as my greatest accomplishments and life lessons learned. College has been an extended journey for me starting in 2008 at John Jay College to present day writing this memo. I have changed my major countless times and gave up countless times all while raising my young daughter alone and working full time to support her.

The second narrative would be the outline of professional growth, less emotional than the first but more rich in professional lessons and learning things the hard way. I became the office manager when I was 23 and at that time was the youngest in the district. I had to hit the ground running and take over an office that was badly mis-managed and learn the ropes of corporate america at the same time.

I’m going to go with my first narrative because I am more invested in it and I feel I can do that story more justice because it is something that so strongly directed my life for years. I also think that it’s something a lot more people can relate and empathize with over being an office manager.

    Hello Dr. Ellis,

Below you will find a short synopsis of two possible stories:

    Choice A

For my first story, I would like to explain a quote that I live by “ It’s the failures that save you”. This quote became a mantra for me after I failed dental hygiene and was on the verge of a mental breakdown. Failing was one of the weakest/best moment of my life. It allowed me to have a new vision and to find my path.

    Beginning- Failing Dental Hygiene
    Middle- Discovering writing
End- A new career and change of perspectives

    Choice B
As the 2015 spring semester neared to the end, I began to worry about not having enough internship opportunities in various field. I began my search on Indeed.com with the goal of acquring one internship before the summer began. I searched with the title “Summer 2015 Intern,” and applied for every internship that I thought was fitting— and was a paid internship! I noticed a listing for a Writing and Strategy Intern for the summer in the financial services and thought why not! I I had no prior knowledge of finance and thought this would be the perfect opportunity to not only learn financial literacy but to explore a niche field. The work of the internship changed me emotionally, physically, and professionally, as well as it gave me pieces for my portfolio which has led me to being able to expand my network.

Beginning- Finding an internship in finance without any experience
    Middle- Discovering new skills
    End- Growing professionally, critically,

For this project I intend on writing on Choice B because it is important for me to share my view on a field where I am an outsider. My experience in the field of finance has been quite an interesting experience. I feel as if I have walked into to a dinner party and taken a seat at the dinner table and no one has noticed my arrival. It is an outsiders’ perspective of a tight nit community. This experience has fostered new ways of thinking, helped me to develop confidence and financial literacy. I want to give back to underprivileged communities by presenting a 30-45 minutes presentation on basic financial literacy and how to save to incur wealth.

    Story #1
The first non-fiction story I would like to tell is when I first came to America. This story will include the decision that led to me coming to America and where I stayed once I arrived. It will also include what my first job was and how I decided to not settle out of desperation. I will include how I worked as a babysitter for many years and developed and close relationship with the family and the two children that I looked after.

    Story #2
The second non-fiction story I would like tell is about my struggle with school and finding the right major to develop my career. I will start the story by explaining what was my first choice and how I realized that it wasn’t the right choice for me. My struggle with math has been a determining factor in changing my major and I will include my many attempts to overcome challenges with math. My begins with my childhood and being allowed to past grades levels without really understanding math. As a direct result, math has always been a hindrance for me. I will discuss the majors that I have changed to my current major as a Professional and Technical Writing student. My story will end with the decision I made to give up my full-time job and become a full-time student just to complete my degree and how I whether I feel I made the right choice.

    Decision
I have decided to go with my second non-fiction story because it has the most meaning and is the most current. I feel that it will relate to my readers more and directly will allow me to engage in conversations.

Re: Twitter Nonfiction Story Project Possibilities

    Hello Professor Ellis,

In this initial phase of this first project for the semester, you have asked us to come up with two possible non-fiction stories in which we could use. My first idea or option, is to tell a story of how I transitioned from schooling in Guyana to the New York public school system. With this narrative, I will be able to share the trials of adjusting into a brand new atmosphere of learning, as well as conquering the obstacles such as friendship, self awareness, and confidence. I choose to tell this story because I believe this transition has been able to enable me to become the hardworking student I am today. It also enables potential employers to gauge my capacity to tackle various scenarios or obstacles as well as handle immense change.

Secondly, the other option for this project would be to tell of my role as a Peer Mentor here at The New York City College of Technology (City Tech). For two semesters now, I have been given the opportunity to mentor incoming freshman students. Although, an exciting position I worried about how I would provide information that would prove to students that I am in fact qualified to help them in their academic career. I, for the first time in my life had to assume the role of a leader and present myself in a manner to which other students would aspire to be like. The reason behind this choice of story is due to the fact that it elaborates how I took on the role of a leader, how I managed the various tasks I have had to learn and strengthen, as well how much I have grown due to this position.

With these options presented to you, my first pick for the project would be to do the first story of my move from Guyana to New York City and my transition in the schooling systems. I believe that this is a strong story to share due to the fact that it not only does it hold great value to myself, but to a larger audience as well. I believe that this story can connect to a variety of people who have faced the hardship of having their entire worlds turn inside out leading them to readjust, and find their place in the world again. I hope that I can shine light on the important details of this story whilst staying true to myself, and to the important aspects that need to shine through in this project.

With everything said, I hope this memo allows you to get enough information about the options of the stories which I have chosen and will allow you to judge whether or not I have chosen the right option for this project.
