Daily Writing: Magazine Article Summary, Cited Quote, and Bibliographic Citation

Write a memo that gives a brief summary of the article that you read for today’s class, quotes one sentence from the article with a parenthetical citation, and provides an APA-formatted bibliographic citation.

Your imagined audience for this memo is a co-worker who is collaborating on a project with you. You want to share the key information in the article with your co-worker. Make up a name for your co-worker to use in your memo.

First, begin your memo with the memo header information: TO (make up your co-worker’s name), FROM (your name), DATE, SUBJECT (make up a short, to-the-point descriptive subject).

Then, write two or three sentences summarizing the article that you read for today’s class. Among those sentences that you write in your own words, I would like you to include an important quote from the article in the following format:

According to Author’s-Last-Name, “quote” (Author’s-Last-Name, Year, p. Page-Number).

For example: According to Vader, “The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force” (Vader, 1977, p. 23).

Or, The author stated, “Students often had difficulty using APA style” (Jones, 1998, p. 199).

Then, conclude your memo with an APA-formatted bibliographic entry.

For example:

Author, A. A., Author, B. B., & Author, C. C. (Year). Title of article. Title of Periodical, volume number(issue number), pages.

Or,

Henry, W. A., III. (1990, April). Making the grade in today’s schools. Time, 135, 28-31.

Your memo should look something like this:

This article on cloud computing goes into depth about the importance of cloud to various companies, and industries around the world. Companies are putting vast amounts of money into cloud security in order to protect their data, and protect themselves from malicious outsie attacks, According to the author, “Malicious cryptomining is one of the leading types of attacks since September 2017, according to Malwarebytes Labs. With the volatility in the Bitcoin market—described as the next gold rush—it’s no surprise that hackers who need massive processing power to verify and confirm transactions to blockchain have found their way to cloud servers in an attempt to earn more digital currency” (Richards, 2018, p. 5). On this article I’m reading lately, a national problem is surfacing around the Mississippi river, “In recent months, precipitation in the lower 48 states reached all-time highs; the rains swelled the tributaries that lead to the Mississippi” (Upholt, 2019, p.59). It seems like water level of the Mississippi River have raised over the past couple of years and is causing a huge problem because the old plan the government initially have is now outdated and need new solutions for the issue.

One benefit of the kit is that is easy to install and includes a wireless router and one or more access points (hubs) to put around the home to deliver fast and consistent speeds in every room. Another benefit is that you do not need to change the name of the network, as your Wi-Fi enabled devices will automatically join the closest and strongest signal. Apple has just announced the upcoming release of their new upcoming phone, the iPhone 11. Their new device contains a new three rear-facing camera, comes in a six and a half inch Oled display with a matte finished glass. I read this article in WIRED magazine today about altruism in the modern day of technology. In the article the author creates a scenario, asking what a person from the 1970s would think of the internet age. He doesn’t think a lot of the obvious technological advances would surprise him more than concept of open source projects. He references giant technological collaborations such as Wikipedia and Linux. These projects have millions of peoples actively volunteering in their free time contributing to something larger than themselves and not for personal gain. Of course, with good comes the bad, while the projects could benefit greatly from support of big companies, instead they “free ride” these projects and open source software for personal gain and do not contribute a thing.

SUBJECT: Magazine Article About The War On Fake News

After incriminating information about Maria Butina, a suspected Russian agent sent to the US, was deleted from Wikipedia, the fear of widespread propaganda across the site grew. Even major companies like Youtube and Facebook are including information from Wikipedia to their respective platform. However, Wikipedia is taking charge in this war against false information. According to Benjakob, “while other platforms are mired in debate over the borders between free speech, propaganda, and trolling, Wikipedia has taken a different route from the onset: community-driven fact checking” (Benjakob, 2019, p. 23). This route that Wikipedia has taken requires there to be a reliable source to back up any claim that is made. Another quality that allowed Wikipedia to take responsibility for cleaning up the mess is that there is complete transparency whenever edits/changes are made whereas companies like Facebook are opaque. It seems that Wikipedia deserves much more credit for its unique approach as it is effective in detecting false news.

SUBJECT: The Weird Joys of World Building

Over the past few years, content creation has become more and more commonplace through outlets like YouTube and Steam providing easier routes of monetization and more and more tools letting content creation become easier for people. This trend is just accelerating over time and something worth discussing now as it even goes to the point of amateurs creating virtual worlds.

According to Thompson “For years making immersive digital environments – was the province of pros, but the story of media in the past twenty years has been on creation tools becoming cheaper and easier to use and then eventually mass market” ( Thompson, 2019, 28). This excerpt summarizes the recent changes in gaming over the past decade. 3D tools like Tinkercad and Sketchup let enthusiasts mess around with architecture and industrial design, while other things like Minecraft let ordinary joes create wonderful things like castles in the sky, although lower quality than the previously mentioned software. Minecraft is especially influential because it has trained a generation of kids to think in XYZ and world-building. It has created many communities and cultures, due to the unique situation of the game.

The trend of more and more people being involved in world-building or content creation is here to stay and what should be discussed is the effects of this. Pepe the Frog for white supremacists, Hilary as the Joker, and other things are just the result of the democratization of content creation, but what is the influence of the virtual world on our real world?
Will people eventually make buildings based on non-professional work or something along those lines?

In 2016, Mirai pinged Twitter and Spotify via devices which overloaded the site and caused it crash. However, a botnet “vaccine” called RATtrap is a home firewall that was created to stop hackers from recruiting your information. It filters out network activity to suspicious websites and is a lifetime membership or in other words it advances as time goes on. You never have to buy a new version of the security device.
