Project 2, Update

To begin class, write a quick memo about what few great insights you have learned from your research. The body of your memo should be no more than six sentences long and it should not include any quotes or paraphrasing. It should be in your own words. However, you can mention where the things that you have learned come from. For example, “I learned about the creation of the Macintosh computer in Steven Levy’s book titled Insanely Great.” You’ll have 20 minutes to write this memo and then post it as a comment to this blog post. Afterwards, we will discuss the overall layout of your research paper and give you the remaining time to begin writing it. Remember to use APA formatting as detailed on the Purdue OWL APA site. We will follow their example paper for overall layout, and of course, cite and reference everything quoted or paraphrased in your essay.

I have learned that the elements of the criminal justice system include: police, prosecution, judiciary, prison, probation and parole. The criminal justice system possess major flaws that need to be addressed. One major flaw is mass incarceration and how this that disproportionately affects minority populations. The United States has one of the highest rates of mass incarceration when compared to other developed countries such as Canada. The rate of recidivism is also an issue. There are criminal justice reform initiatives being proposed to reduce the rate of mass incarceration such as legislation to reduce mandatory sentencing on drug crimes and one NYC initiative to raise the age teens can be imprisoned for certain crimes.

Over the break I’ve been reading about 5G Technology and I found out that Verizon is planning to launch 5G technology to the public as early as 2018. I did a presentation about Verizon and its 5G technology last year for my Communication Electronics class and going through my research about them and their work with the technology I found out that they were the ones more advance in that field, compare to other major carriers such as; AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. The other companies might be doing their work with the 5G technology, but they haven’t been open to the media as Verizon had. The last thing I read was that Verizon bought optical fiber from a company called Corning Inc for $1.05 billion of dollars to improve their network infrastructure.
I think this is going to be a great topic because this technology will benefit us all.

Once i did the research necessary for project two i have learned important topics on the necessities on becoming a real estate lawyer. I have found reassurance as to what differentiates real property and intangible property. Real property is anything that is tangible a car, computer, land and a home. While intangible property can be bank accounts, shared stocks investments bonds. Property laws were created for the public to compete for property in a civilized manner instead of fighting each other for it. One thing is for certain we will always need to have ownership over property and especially when it comes to real estate property.

In regards to what I have found for my research paper for Project 2, I have found some very interesting things in regards to my topic, electric power systems. From the opinions on trying to improve electric power systems to discussing many different types of electric power systems, the information that I have gathered for my research paper has been very useful. I have even found some information that helps goes in depth of a certain part within the network. Aside from talking about what an electric power system is and what types there are, I have found information regarding their effect on the market, and an argument on whether smart technology can help or hinder this network of electrical components. While there is more to discuss about my research, I will save the rest of the information regarding everything I have found for my research paper. With all the information that I have gathered, I believe that I have what I need to make an interesting research paper to read.

The purpose of this memo is to provide an update on my second project, which is the research regarding hospital financial management.

Hospital Financial Management (HFM) is one of the fields in healthcare administration. HFM relates not only to operational finance, but as well as to investments and acquisitions by healthcare and medical organizations. As Kenneth D. Chestek states hospitals are no longer purely public charities. Nowadays hospitals transformed into big financial and social entities, which in turn, results in a complex financial structure.HFM plays crucial role in hospital and medical group economical survival and is important in order to avoid failures such as Enron and Nyack Hospital.Nyack Hospital bankruptcy, described by Willian O’Cleverley, is major case where improper financial interpretation and level of business expertise among the board of directors resulted in business failure.

I learnt about the history of technical writing with all its warts. This history gives me an appreciation and I learnt a lot by reading about the contribution by Thomas Huxley. Honestly, I did not know this history and it puts the subject in perspective. The debates about technical writing are thoughtful, fascinating and interesting. I am particularly attentive to Bernadette Longo’s piece titled, “Spurious Coin.” My particular interest lies in the explanation of editing which I intend to further pursue.

At this point, I have learned that Immigration Law is a Federal matter, a branch of law that deals with the entry and settlement of foreign nationals into the U.S, and it was only in 1875 that Congress passed a first law that restricted entry of certain people to the U.S. marking the beginning of such branch. I have also learned that there are local governments that nowadays are refusing to cooperate with federal agencies in reporting immigrants without a legal status: these are called Sanctuaries Cities. Also, from the Federal Government side, a specific task force has been given greater power by our current President to enforce Immigration laws. This task force is called ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), and is part of the DHS (Department of Homeland Security), which also houses the Secret Service, Transportation and Security Administration (TSA), and Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA). Lastly I have learned that the President’s Executive Order to “bulk up” ICE has people scared of losing all of their lives achievements in the U.S. largely because under such order, people with very minor offenses, like jumping a turnstile, are being now targeted by ICE. There are a few organizations that are giving advice to local communities, but this fight has just begun.

First and foremost I would like to point out that I wish I had had more time during spring break to work on Project 2. I did spend some time with reading – or at least glancing over – some of the academic journal articles that I have bookmarked. I am satisfied with what I have been able to find, as the contents will all be useful for the draft, and ultimately for the final version of the project. Currently I still have to get the books needed, and as a result of that the plan is to spend a good chunk of the coming weekend in the library. That is about all I can think of for this update.

This memo is about what I have learned so far on the Project 2. In project 2, I am writing about the Information Graphics, so called Info-graphics. Since I need to do research, this project forces me to read a lot. As a result, I gain more knowledge and in-depth understanding on Info-graphics, which is my field of study. I learned from history facts to up to date issues in this subject. Besides, I feel myself more confidence to prepare a white paper, or a technical writing any subject related to my field compare to myself before this semester. I am posting some of these memos to my personal graphic design blog, so I believe this is really rewarding for my career.

The reasoning for this memo is to reveal some aspects I found during my research, of “Patents: in the engineering field. One thing that really stood out was the amount of politics that go into patents, whether it’s knowing what kind to get, where to go, how long can one hold it. During my earlier research I was referred to patent courts in Texas and how people would go there with the intent not to request a patent but to sue others for leveraging. These kind of politics makes it very difficult for one without considerable backing to retain patent authority, which creates a monopoly for copyrights. Through my research I’ve realized why people aren’t getting patents on devices/concepts as early as they should be, the timing for this process is crucial because once it’s revealed it can easily fall under someone else jurisdiction.

This memo is about the insights I have learned from my research for Project 2.

One aspect of the school-to-prison pipeline is the school system’s desire to eliminate lower performing or problem students due to the pressures of the No Child Left Behind Act, which required students to be performing at a certain level or standard. If these standards were not met, the school would either lose funding or worse, be closed down. The threat of these consequences resulted in zero tolerance policies that led to stricter enforcement of rules, as well as more serious punishments. Minor incidents and misconduct that would have previously been dealt with internally, by things such as contacting parents or staying in detention, were replaced with more serious punishments that took students of school (suspensions and expulsions) or introduced them to the criminal justice system (arrests and incarcerations). Lastly, minority and special needs students were the most impacted by these changes in disciplinary methods, and often times, the students that were deemed problematic from a young age would mentally check out early on, leading to even greater future problems.

At a glance, user-centered design (UCD) seems obvious, but it took a long time for this design approach style, to be implemented widely across different corporations, businesses, and job fields. UCD, is still yet to reach its potential, but has seen a high adoption rate in recent years. Most notably, many companies, groups, and individuals do not understand what UCD is, how to implement the approach, or measure it’s success. Because of this, there is a great hesitation to implement this design technique on projects. UCD is a bit time consuming during the “research phase”, but one of the benefits of it is that it cuts down on development time. Cost of implementation can vary, depending on how much research you want to devout to it, and the type of ways to get the information needed. Common UCD research methods used are less expensive these days, which include: surveys, phone interviews, card sorting, and analytical data (think google analytics, user stats). UCD is directly correlated to usability. Usability standards may have been what UCD was born out of.

This memo is a brief insight on what I have learned while conducting researching on Regulations of Healthcare in New York. While reading a book called, EMTALA Answer Book, I’ve learned that every state has their own regulations to their healthcare. The research showed me that the topic was extremely broad so I wanted to narrow it down to my location, which is New York. What I’ve learned the in order get health care to Improving its quality is to have a health care reform goals of : increasing access for the uninsured, controlling rising costs, and improving patient safety by improving the quality of care. I have also learned that may doctors who encounter diagnosis of disease need to report those diagnosis to the Department of health and human services. I have also found out that President Donald Trump made a lot of healthcare leaders happy with his executive order calling for the federal government to kill two regulations with each new one it rolls out. With healthcare providers and health facility must take every precaution to comply with regulations of health to ensure patient’s rights are not violated and lawsuit do not occur.

I was able to find good books from the library database that gave me relative information on my topic. I had an easier time finding books than articles relating to my topic. My topic which is microelectronics is a subcategory of electrical engineering and I have learned the importance of this sub field within electrical engineering. Overall, I believe I have a great idea about what microelectronics is and it’s uses in society.

After doing research about arduino, I learned about the kind of language was used in arduino, which is call C/C++ programing, basically it combines two programing languages into one. Arduino is cheaper and more flexible than other microcontrollers. The world’s first microprocessor is 4 bit intel 4004 in 1971.Contrast to a microprocessor, microcontrollers contains an integrated CPU, all the memory and I/0 interfaces, but microprocessors need more chips, such as an computer has a hard drive, memory, cpu in separated chips. The example of microcontroller are Microchip’s PIC, the 8051, Intel’s 80196, and Motorola’s 68HCxx series. Arduino can make many projects such as paperless queue Management system, a real color picker, an open source wireless control system, and a alarm system and etc.

I did a lot of research on topic “SCADA” which stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. I found most of the resources in our school online library website database, IEEE Xplore. My research contains information regarding the history, evaluation, and application of SCADA. I also learned about the basics of SCADA in Cobus Strauss book titled Practical Professional Books from Elsevier : Practical Electrical Network Automation and Communication Systems (1). I learned that SCADA is used to remotely control the devices through Human Interface Machine. It collects data, transfer it through a physical medium, and display it on the screen which is called master station.

The subject I selected to do my research is the National Electrical Code (NEC). So far I’ve learned when the NEC was first implemented and what the story behind it is. The fire department is the industry in charge of making sure the rules are followed as explained in the NEC manual. The main reason why they created an NEC manual was for electricians to learn the danger of a bad wiring can cause and explain step by step the correct procedure electrical wiring will be installed at home or business. The main use of the rules explained in the NEC manual is to save lives by avoiding fires due to a short circuit. Each year, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) gets thousands of proposals to be implemented in the NEC manual. Only a few are accepted and updated in the NEC manual every three years.

I learned about renewable energy that it is a clean energy that ti is collected from renewable sources which are unlimited sources that means, it will not go away. This kind of energy can help to clean the environment because it does not pollute the air. Using any renewable energy can help people to get some money. For example, in some cities of the United State, the state give you money if you are using solar panel to generate electricity to your house, and will increase the value of the house. Those can of renewable energy can be such a solar, wind, hydrogen, etc. Also, it is very important because it help us to find another way to life without the petroleum.

In this memo, i’ll be giving a update pertaining to my research in data science. Over the past week i’ve been computing code using python. I learned how to create directories program that contains x’s amount of names. In this program there’s a list of first and last name. In the program an individual is able to navigate thru the list and construct a data structure chart. Data science itself is broad field, so in order to conduct any research within data science one must single source what sorta data they would like to do research on. There’s data science within finance, government, insurance, and etc. I’ve decided to single source more towards government simply because there’s a growth of mobile devices and smart sensors. Nowadays, we are moving more to cloud-based storage and with the growth of social media and Internet traffic information is becoming difficult to organize data therefore data scientist are important.
