Beginning of Class Writing: Research Questions Memo

With the article that you read for today’s class, you will be writing a memo outlining several research questions.

When I say research, I mean it as a synonym for investigate, explore, and discover.

While you should have learned something from the article that you read, what can you follow up to learn more about? It could involve something named in the article. It could involve an idea not fully explained in the article. It could be something that the article referenced in passing that you would like to learn more about. It could be anything connected to the article.

So, the goal for this writing assignment is to think of four questions that you could conceivably answer given the time and resources to research on your own.

Your memo should follow this format:

Memo Header (to, from, date, subject)

One sentence describing this memo’s purpose.

One sentence summary of the article.

List of four questions.

APA Bibliographic Entry for the article that you read. Use the Purdue OWL APA guide.

Copy-and-paste your work into a comment made to this blog post.

Below are some suggestions for deeper research related to “Why We Sleep Less As We Age” in this month’s Popular Science.

Article discusses decline in deep sleep. What is considered deep sleep? How much is normal?
Article mentions that sleeping pills don’t provide deep sleep. Why? Are certain pills better or worse than others?
Article discusses sleep as necessary for physiological function. Why? What does it do that is necessary?
Article mentions possibility of electrical pulses to stimulate deep sleep. How does this work in practice?

I hope to explore some of the points made in Inc’s interview, to apply to my own career.

The article “Making a Social Media Impression” overviews Mr. Smith’s discovery of capitalizing on monetary gain from social media and building a wealthy company from those profits.

How exactly do you get paid from Social Media?
What services would a company like your’s offer?
What does your company look for when hiring strategists?
What are the major pitfalls of social media?

Purpose of this memo is to go further into the history of pastry in Paris.
The Article written by Chef Yotam Ottelenghi is describing the rich history of pastries in Paris, and its fondness of dessert.

-How much impact over the years have millennial’s have in pastry?
-What are the differences between ‘Boulangeries’ and ‘Patisseries’ if the both sell similar items?
-Has there been a boom of vegan pastries?
-How does pastries compare from that of your country(India) to that of Eastern Europe?

After I read your article about Disney World Hotels, I personally have some questions I want to ask you.

Your article “Disney World Hotels Are Allowing Dogs for the First Time Ever”, is a very interesting article, it talks about which hotels inside the Disney World are allow their guest bring in their pets. The below questions are the questions that I want to ask you :

-Does the pets need to have some kind insurance before the going into the hotel?
-Can the pets’ owner monitor their pets when they are out playing in the Disney park?
-Is the the people working in the pets care center have some kinds of training before they start work?
-What are the requirements for the employees that work in there?

    Subject: Porting Video Games

I want to focus on the possibility of a future where game ports could be easier to deliver.

Due to the technicality of how games act with hundreds of thousands of unique gaming setups, solid ports of games are a difficult task to reach.

Would it be possible to be more efficient with the quality of a port if it runs on firmware and hardware that’s varies on drivers?
Since it’s mentioned that consoles are easier to tend to, why is the trend for most indie companies with a decent budget to go to the PC market first exclusively?
It is understandable that there are many issues with funding for some companies when making a good port is costly, do you think that justifies the use of crowd-funding.
Should there be more effort given from Graphic Card companies such as nVidia and AMD to provide more solid driver updates that give a lower chance of issues with ports?

SUBJECT: Four Research Questions on “A Bumper Crop of Fruit-Picking Bots”

This memo entails four brief research questions on topics related to the September 2017 article, “A Bumper Crop of Fruit-Picking Bots,” by Anna Vlasits in the magazine Wired.

The aforementioned article is about how funding for agricultural technology has grown exponentially through investments by venture capitalists who are interested in using agbots (agricultural robots), instead of farmworkers, to harvest apples.

    • Regarding Abundant Robotics, what is this company’s origin and how did it come to develop robots for agriculture?

    • How exactly does the Abundant prototypical robot use vacuums to pick apples, and what technology allows them to be powerful enough to grip but gentle enough not to bruise the fruit?

    • If the fast-growing popularity of agbots continues across all crops as it has with apples, does this mean that traditional farmworkers will be phased out altogether at some point?

    • The portfolio for one of the noted venture capital firms Tellus Partners contains only Abundant Robotics; does Tellus Partners invest in, or will it be investing in, other similar companies?

    SUBJECT: China’s Battery Race

This memo is a brief summary and a couple of questions I have about the article written in TIME magazine called “Charged up: Batteries are the next target in China’s clean-energy conquest” by Justin Worland.

In the article it describes how China is advancing in their chase to have clean energy produce and how they will do it. The U.S is behind in this “Battery Battle” since more than half of the solar panels are produced in China. China is expected to have control of 65% of the battery market by 2021. Not only are they producing solar panels but they are also have vehicles that are being mass produced.

-How can the U.S gain domination on this clean power race?
-Why is china so ahead in this “battery race”?
-What is needed for the U.S to become a leading contender in solar panel production?
-If two companies in china merged in hopes to make twice as much battery capacity as tesla why aren’t we the leading in this race?

    SUBJECT: Research Questions Memorandum

    ENG1133 Specialized Communication for Technology

The purpose of this memorandum is to research an article written in the September/October edition of the IEEE potentials magazine, by Christopher E. Root, and to pose four follow-up questions.

The article covers a variety of questions pertaining to job hiring and managing one’s career including studying, training, mentoring and seeking promotional opportunities.

My 4 questions are as follows:

    1) What job titles, for employment, exist at the Vermont Electric Power Company?
    2) What are the chances for upward mobility?
    3) What are the rewards, financial, pension, health benefits and others that one can expect to receive from this industrial job?
    4) The article states many incentives to work at this institution. There is no mention of health benefits for example. What are the downsides of this career and working at Vermont Electric Power Company?

    Subject: Hurricanes effect on ecosystems

Developing some research questions after reading the article “Hurricanes send scientists scrambling for data”by Rachael Lallensack, since it relates to the field I am interested in.

In the article “Hurricanes send scientists scrambling for data” by Racheal Lallensacks, she explains why scientists are rushing to gather info from current hurricanes that ravished Florida and Texas , by using technology such as the Doppler-on-wheels to gather info from the eye of the hurricanes, in order to improve the accuracy of public warning of Hurricanes and also to understand the long-term effects these hurricanes are having on wetlands and other species.

    List of four questions.

    – How does salt water affect the fresh and saltwater systems?

    – What are the long term effects of the Hurricanes on ecosystems?

    – How does the proposal for rapid response research grants work, how can you apply and how long is the waiting time?

    – How long will it take until enough data is gathered to make conclusions on the effects on ecosystems?

Subject: Research Questions as per Energy saving

Here’s how we can achieve more savings in our energy bills. This is just another way we as facilities Managers can achieve some return on our equipment as well.

We as Facilities Managers are always on the lookout for cost savings opportunities.
The purpose of this memo is to inform you of an article I read in that we can do a follow up inquiry as to the subject matter.

When it comes to reducing lighting energy, energy management when integrated with proper installation can yield as much as 30%-50% savings for us. Documented accounts in this article from Iowa, Oregon and Indiana to name a few, are proof positive that this approach works.
As pointed out in an article referred below in Buildings Magazine September 2017 issue.

    1. How far reaching would the utility companies influence be in this revenue saving?
    2. What are the returns on investment as per power source? Wind, Solar or hydro. power.
    3. What is the possibility of the product manufactures monopolizing this market, omitting the start-ups?
4 Which would be more cost effective in the long run, Outsourcing or using in-house personnel?

The purpose of this memo is to further inquire about the Yellowstone volcano and the information provided.

“The Day the U.S. Could Lose 20 States” covers how a geologist realized the volcano is much larger than anticipated and could wipe out the entire Western side of the U.S. by raining fire and searing ash down over about half the country.

How exactly did they find out the volcano has more magma chambers?
How do they know it reaches the outer core of the Earth?
How can they be sure the volcano would erupt any moment from now to the next 60,000 years?
How can they be sure the destruction will devastate 20 states, if not more or less?

The purpose of this memo is to enlist your help in getting a depth understanding of the rule of law regarding jurisdiction of multiple plaintiffs filing suit from different states.
This article discusses the rejection of a law suit filed with multiple defendants from other states because of lack of jurisdiction.
    1. Federal courts are allowed to hear cases from parties residing in separate states as long as the amount disputed is over $75,000, this is called Diversity Jurisdiction; could this case have been tried in a federal court?
    2. How will similar cases pending upcoming trial, be handled going forward?
    3. How could the trial court not be aware of their lack of jurisdiction before taking on the case?
    4. Can the rejected plaintiffs now sue the state courts or government for lack of thorough investigation before taking on the case?

Subject: Research Questions about the Green Smart Buildings as Model Buildings for Occupants.

I am writing this memo in regard to a research I have about how Green smart buildings are Ideal for occupants well-being.
I thought about this research while i was reading the article “ Modelling the Dynamic Interaction between Building Performance and Occupant Well-being” from Stanford University Center for Integrated Facility Engineering online publication; the subject was about the environmental factors as Air Quality and temperature impact on occupants (specially workers) comfort. In the other hand the how to adjust building systems to accurately insure the model building performance by presenting a comprehensive framework to model the dynamic interaction between building performance and occupants well-being.

The following questions are to the purpose of forming my the major subject research:
1- what is The technical definition of a green smart building?
2- how to manage a sustainable indoor environment?
3- what are the ways to accurately predict and measure the best models of building performance and occupants well-beings?
4- how to measure the degree of productivity in relation to the lack of adjustment of the building systems?

After I read your article on using stress to get the good energy out of it, some question came to my mind that I would like to share with you.

Article written by you titled, “Use Stress to Help Good Energy Grow” had caught my attention because I never thought about how one can use stress to help them turn it into the good energy, that is why the following questions emerged:

What do you mean by “taking a workout vitamin” in terms of what type of exercise should someone do to feel better?
Are there any special techniques one should use in order to redirect the bad thoughts to the good thoughts?
How creating a satisfaction could help a person in becoming stress free?
What are some other anti anxiety tactics someone would use besides doing 10 deep breaths?
