Beginning of Class Writing: Product Research and Citations

For today’s class, I asked you to read Louise Balle, “How to Do Product Research,” http://smallbusiness.chron.com/product-research-22152.html, and the in-text citations and works cited sections of the Purdue OWL MLA website, https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/1/.

During the first ten minutes of class, write a memo and post it as a comment on this blog entry. It should respond to these questions:

  • What is product research?
  • Why do product research?
  • Why document your research sources?
  • What research projects have you done before in other classes (please briefly describe the topic and length)?

The article, “How to do Product Research” by Louise Balle highlighted why product research was important, and 6 steps on how to do them. In essence, product research can be compared to a background check for a product idea, the product being, what you are making and trying to sell. Product research is one of the most important steps in product development. The first step to product research is to find books, magazines or newspaper articles on the type of product you are trying to release. You want to learn all you can about the product to help motivate customers. The 2nd step is to conduct a case study which is conducting a study on problems companies have faced when releasing their similar product and solutions/results. Step 3 is to employer product engineers, which are people who will review your product design. The next step is to hire customers from your target market for your focus. This will give you feedback from people who will most likely buy your product. The 5th step in the process is to survey potential buyers to see what they would want out of the product, that way you can improve your product in a way that will benefit them. The last step is to create samples of the product to get feedback. It is important to also cite the sources you have used to get your information to build credibility, and so you are not accused of plagiarism from other people. I have done at least 5 research projects in my college career. One of them was to reverse engineer a robot and write a report on how it works, what we found inside, and the process of how to put the robot back together when we had taken it apart. The project had to be 20 pages, typed. Another research project I had done was in english composition where I had to write a double spaced research essay about how technology is slowly taking away our time. It had to be 10 pages, and could not go over the amount. The amount of research gone into this paper, to date, the most I have researched for anything. The citation page also had to be at least half a page.

Product research is essentially doing through research on a specific product, knowing the up and downs with the product, the company who made the product and their hardships when designing the product. Doing product research makes you find out how the product was first brought up and learning how did the product get out on the market, and also learning how did the product do in the market. You will want to document your research sources because you might have to give credit to the product that might be similar to your product that you are bringing out. Other research projects i have done in the past were science research projects in my bioinformatics class, where i would have to do through research of specific DNA and learn how they alter and form a disease base on specific DNA mutations.

Product research is the an important part of the product development process. Product research is to check the background of the product you are trying to make. The purpose of the research is to predict how a product will sell based off of the history of a similar product. Use books, articles and old ads to find previous campaigns that were successful for others. Purchasing case studies can shed light on the difficulties behind the release of similar products in the past. Documenting your sources is important because it allows you and other to review the place where you obtained your information.

In “How to Do Product Research” by Louise Balle, I learned that product research is basically a background check for a new product idea. The reason for doing product research is to check if there is a product like that which already exists which can have an influence on how you create your product or whether you decide to change it completely. Also, another reason for doing product research is to estimate the amount of money you can make off of the new product based on the parts, as well as the demand for it. You must document your sources since the information that you receive can aid you in developing your new product but since that information is not yours then you must give credit when due. Also the sources that you might find may include case studies or statistics that can show what issues other companies have had with a similar product and may help you to avoid those problems. Therefore you must credit your sources, so that you can be sure that they are reliable and trustworthy to look back on, as well as be able to compare your own progress to those statistics so you can predict the future outcome of your new product.

One research project that I have recently done has been on the sexual exploitation of children in exchange for sexual gratification for the predator, as well as in exchange for daily necessities for the children. It was a three page paper along with a Works Cited page referencing the sources I use. In my research paper, I described what sexual exploitation is, who is being affected, who is profiting and how they are profiting, along with my own ideas about how I would resolve the issue using my imagination.

Product research is essentially doing a background search on an idea or subject. They are done in order to check similar products and trying to figure out if there is a market for it. You can go the library to find information, make surveys, use case studies, and provide samples for the public for feedback. These things can help you get better information to help motivate consumers to buy your product.

We document our sources because the ideas we use in our work are sometimes not our own. We may find information from research done by experts or other people with more knowledge of our topics. To avoid plagiarism, we cite our sources and give credit to those who did the research. In writing, credibility is essential, if nobody can trust what you write then you won’t be getting very far. By citing the sources we use, we can keep our credibility up.

In recent classes, I have worked on research papers on death penalty, whether it is constitutional or not and in a different one, about who should be the one making the decision to end a person’s life. I have done one on the argument about whether video games can cause violence or not as well as, on topics about AIDS/HIV and privacy in the modern age. These usually are around 4-5 pages minimum with multiple sources ranging from journalistic to expert.

The article, “How to do a Product Research” by Louise Balle which provided a guide line consisted of six simple steps needed to be taken in order to complete a successful product research. Product research is research for a product, a background check for a new product. The purpose of a product research is to obtain important information about that product such as, similar offerings, and all the information you would need to know surrounding the product. It is important that you document all your research sources, to avoid plagiarism and the issues of copyright. The last research project that I have done was for my Medical Fundamentals of Informatics class, in which the topic was the role of social media in Health Care. This research project was required to be five pages long, accompanied with a power point presentation as well. I researched examples of how social media is benefiting an harmful in Health care, purpose of social media of how it connects to Health Care, and surveys / pictures to give proof of each. I received a B+ on this research project.

Product research is very important when creating new products and should happen during many steps although there are six steps in doing product research. The first step is to do research on the product you expect to release. The next step would be to use case studies and learn about other companies that are similar to yours. Third step is to employ product engineers and test out your prototype. The next two steps are to hire customers for your focus groups and ask for their honest opinions. and lastly the six step is to create samples and give them to people for their honest opinions. these six simple steps should help people create great small business and it should help their businesses rise.
I’ve done many research projects in high school and here at city tech. The research topics I’ve done here at city tech were on products that I created in my Principals of Selling class and research on activities in my English 1101 class. In my selling class my task was to create a company and my partner and I created something called Mystery Drink, a type of liquor that was very high priced and very good quality wise. In english I stated how doing yoga and working out at the gym do different things for your body, comparing and contrasting the two.

Product research is when you dig information on item that you plan to release to see if there is similar products in the market. Whenever developing a product we should always do research on the applications of it such as developing shampoo, the marketer should know about hair care.
It is important to do product research because it gives you an understanding of previously developed items that are similar to your own. It will allow you to see case studies and it will deepen your understanding of the limitations of the products.

We should document our research because we can go back on it and check for trials and error results. it will also give us a reference for what we have found in our product research while developing our own.

Research project of “Accessibility of Healthcare” in my medical informatics class allowed me learn more about my topic such as the accessibility of healthcare around the world and how they all differ. It was a group project and we all had to divide amount of work into different sections of the projects. Then we had to put it all together as a group assignment.

According to the readings, Product research is when a company is selling or developing a product it is important to analyze already existing products of similar kind. By doing this it company estimates the selling potential of their product. Also the company needs to realize through research and find a great number of sources to ensure that they have all the necessary information to make good choices about their product. It is important to document your research sources first of all to be able to give credit to the sources authors and also because you want to make sure that these sources are reliable and up to date. There is also a possibility that you or the readers would like to go back to the sources later to read in more depth about the idea mentioned. Some research that I have done for other classes include an English 101 research paper about the landmark neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights and Molecular Science research on Antibiotic Resistant bacteria. During my English 101 project I researched about the founding, powerful and influential families of the neighborhood, I mostly researched the information in the Brooklyn Historical society website and their locations library archives. I wrote the whole project in an MLA style format including citations. During my science research I read a lot of scientific articles which I started getting from google scholar and eventually went to City Tech library database to find more peer reviewed scientific articles on the topic. This project was written in a format the professor specified and with APA style citations.

As discussed in the article, Product Research is necessary before putting a product on the Market. To do a product research means doing a background check, to prevent mistakes and develop a more efficient product. The article states to improve a product a company has to Survey customers , hiring customers for feedback to figure out how to improve the product and what would motivate customers to buy the product.

Product research is a background check for new product ideas. When developing a new product, you will need to do various researches to find all the necessary information to make informed choices for the product. This is why product research is important. In product research there are 6 essential steps. Step 1, find different readings you can about the product to provide insight into the product you plan to release. Step 2, use a case study to see what other companies that produced the same kind of product did right or wrong. Step 3, hire product engineer to review your product and test it for quality and usability. Step 4, try to get feedback from people that would most likely use your product when it hit the shelves. Step 5, survey potential buyers to gauge your product’s viability. This way you can see their interest level of the product. Step 6, manufacture samples of your product and distribute them to your focus group to get feedback of your product. If these steps are followed it will increase the success of your product.
During my time at City Tech, I had do manufacture a solar panel that tracks the sun’s throughout the day. Before we manufactured the product we had to research solar panels from other companies to see which ways to track the sun are efficient and reliable. This led my group to change our blue print multiple of times. In the end because of other companies’ success and failures, we were able to learn from them to build a better solar panel.

According to Louise Balle, product research is similar to a “background check for new product ideas” as it is simply researching what may help you sell products. This usually results in knowing what the customer wants, which is a good business practice. Product research includes doing surveys, case studies, and reading articles among others.

Documenting your sources is very important as it lets you know where you discovered information. It could also help in finding other sources that are related. Not documenting your sources will cause you to be in trouble of plagiarism and confused in knowing where the information was originally located.

A research project that I have done in the past discussed how gentrification has changed Times Square throughout the years. This was about 5 pages or so in length and contained more than 20 sources. Another research project talked about how police brutality has changed the world we live in. It was only 3 pages with 9 sources.

Product research is basically finding information about specific product that we are looking for. We have to find about its background like when product was invented and how they developed into higher levels throughout the time. Product research has 6 steps. First one is to collect information about the product from library books, magazines or newspapers. Second step is to use case studies. Case study will help to find out any problems that company faced before and how they solved it. Third step is to employ product engineers. Fourth step is to hire customers from our targeted market for focus groups. Step five is to provide buyers with product information like its benefits and features. Last step is to make samples and pass it around people and get their feedbacks. The reason why we do product research is to get to know about product thoroughly in order to be successful to selling the product. We have to know that it may cause ups and downs one day in future and be ready for any difficulties. We have to know pros and cons about the product. Without product knowledge we may face to problems and wouldn’t be able to solve the, quickly and it may affect the product production and business badly. We have to document our every research because we may need it and we might go back to read more about it. Sometimes those research web pages may expire and later on we might need the information. In order to avoid loss of a research or any information we have to document them.

In this college I have done only one research project and it was in my microbiology class. It was actually experiment based research. I had to take notes about the bacterias that I have grown in the lab on agar plates that was made from medicine or salt. I had to find out from the book and from internet if my results were correct or I have made mistakes. It was interesting project and it had to be 5-6 pages with pictures in it. Pictures of bacterias that I grew on the agar plates.
