In-Class Writing, Bullet Points Memo

During today’s class, you will write a memo summarizing the article that you have brought. Unlike our previous memos, you will use a combination of short paragraphs and bullet points. The purpose of this format is to increase its readability for someone with less time to read over the details. Your memo should follow this format:

Header

Intro and Memo’s Purpose (no more than 50 words)

At least 5 bullet points of the main topics of the article in your own words. Each bullet point may not be longer than two lines long and it must be written as a complete sentence.

Reference in APA format.

After you post your memo, use the remaining time to work on your Job Ad and Company Research Memo. A draft of it is due on March 2.

For Feb 28, bring another article for a different in-class writing exercise.

For March 2, have your draft of the Job Ad and Company Research Memo ready to turn in, and bring this information to class in an easy to access way (written, printed, available quickly online, etc.):

  • Complete work history including where, job title, when, tasks, and reference info.
  • Academic transcripts and make notes on the classes that you have taken in your major–what knowledge have you learned and what skills have you gained?
  • Special skills: what manual skills do you know? what computer skills do you have? do you have a hobby that figures into your career? Rank what you know on these levels: novice, intermediate, and advanced.
  • Honors/awards/volunteer work: bring any relevant details. These do not have to be associated with your major.

The purpose of this memo is to summarize the article by Cara Metz, Titled Rally and Resist in New York Teacher. The article discusses how thousands of UFT members are fighting for the cause for equal opportunities and respect for all people including people of color, females, and LGBT..

The cause for the increase in UFT members in protest has been due to the new elected president Trump’s views and opinions on these minority groups.
The majority of protesters are against education secretary nominee Betsy DeVos’s views on the education system in NYC including eliminating unions.
One D57 school expresses concern when it comes to DeVos’s Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
UFT members believe that Trump is not a fit role models for students as they try to encourage anti bullying policies and respect for LGBT students in schools.
UFT members are increasing their numbers in protest to demonstrate how the newly elected president is affecting the NYC school systems.

The article “The Light Touch” by Stephanie Zacharek is about how the Oscar-nominated film Silence was able to get made. The reason being that Director Martin Scorsese and Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto had to find a way to shoot the movie through all that was happening around them.

The film took 27 years to make.
The film is based on Shusaku Endo’s 1966 novel Silence.
The movie was mostly made on film and not a digital camera.
The movie was filmed in Taiwan.

On February 3, 2017, President Donald Trump signed a travel ban from seven major Muslim countries around the world, which left thousands stranded or detained. The effects on the travel ban had a unique effect on Uber and Lyft, two of the largest transportation companies, in the states. There were protests at the John F. Kennedy Airport where the New York Taxi Workers Alliance issued a temporary halt on rides to the airport. As a result the following occurred:

Uber continued to send their drivers to the airports, which sparked controversy and a #DELETEUBER hashtag.

The CEO of Uber, Travis Kalanick told his employees “We’ll partner with anyone in the world as long as they’re about making transportation.”(Johnson, 2017, p. 15)

Lyft announced they would donate 1 million dollars to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), who are currently fighting the travel ban.

An early investor of Lyft was appointed by Trump as a special adviser, who many saw as a conflict of interest.

The CEO of Uber, Travis Kalanick collaborated with other CEOs such as Airbnb, Slack, and Blue Apron’s Matt Salzberg to issue a statement saying they do not support the travel ban.

In the article “This Is A Test, Stand Up For The Climate– And For Civilization.” from Wired magazine discusses President Donald Trump’s decision to end action on climate change and kill the climate treaty adopted in 2015 in Paris. It then goes on to discuss why we need to keep such plans because climate change really does exist.

Joseph Fourier in the 1820’s realized that gases could trap heat in the atmosphere and Svante Arrhenius calculated that the rise of global temperature coincides with CO2 levels

Hans Suess & Roger Revelle in the 1950’s discovered that oceans could not absorb excess CO2 and that it must be collecting in the atmosphere causing it’s levels to rise.

The Paris accord would limit the global temperature rise to 2 degree celsius this century. No, this is not a solution but it was a step in the right path.

Trump’s not believing in climate change will add serious friction and slow down the process of solving climate change, which could cause serious damage in the future

It’s either we fix it or we don’t and if we don’t such catastrophes like massive storms and other natural disasters will occur that we are not prepared to handle.

Laurent Brookshield wrote about the relationship of racial bias and patients. This has become an issue in recent years and in the healthcare industry this has become an unconscious practice towards many minority groups. The fact that race is starting to play a bigger role in health treatments can cause problems beyond the healthcare industry. This not only put citizens at a risk in their health, but this creates tension between minorities and the healthcare system.

    This is Implicit bias
This issue stems from Medical schools
In 2008 the A.M.A stated minorities receive less painkillers for injuries.
A report in Academic medicine shows race is a risk factor for conditions.
NYIT medical students host a free monthly clinic to combat this bias.
