The area of study that I am currently pursuing is a bachelor’s level in Computer Engineering Technology (CET). In order to pursue a bachelor’s degree, you must first complete the associate level of the program, which awards you a degree in Electromechanical Engineering (EMT). According to City Tech’s course catalog.“The Electromechanical Engineering Technology program, the only one of its kind within the CUNY system, was developed in response to the need to prepare competent technicians who had the special skills needed by the computer industry” (New York City College of Technology, 2017, p. 223). With that being said, the field of electromechanical engineering is a great base to the field of computer engineering.

By completing my bachelors in computer engineering technology, it is possible to start a career in most major technology companies. Graduates can expect to possibly be employed at MTA, Jetblue, or even the NYPD. (New York City College of Technology, 2017, p. 223). The department of CET also states “Graduates of the CET program are expected to be employed, as engineering technologists or the equivalent, in positions beyond the entry-level for which this program has prepared them” (New York City College of Technology, 2017 p. 225). However, I am taking a different approach to the employment opportunities that are possible to me. I plan on using my degree to help students with specials need use technology to communicate. I would like to become a special education teacher for the New York City Department of Education.

According to the course catalog, students are encouraged to think independently and analytically. (New York City College of Technology, 2017, p. 225). In my opinion, my background in computer engineering has allowed me to have a different insight on certain issues that may arise in the classroom and come up with innovative ways to solve them. I have taken courses such as digital logic and problem solving which require a great deal of planning solutions to electronic issues. These skills can also benefit me in the future when it comes to lesson planning.

In the future, I plan to use my bachelor’s degree in order to attend a program called New York City Teaching Fellows. Teaching fellows will give me the hands on skills that I need to manage a classroom using my teaching specialty of technology as well as pursue a master’s degree in education. The skills that I still need to learn in the future are, classroom management, and child psychology.

According to the City Tech College Catalog, “The Professional and Technical Writing program is designed to prepare students to communicate clearly and effectively using a variety of
tools and media.” (New York City College of Technology, 2017, p. 89).
With the course I am currently taking they have increased my ability to understand English a lot more. With the rigorous writing needed it sharpens and hones my skills on essay. I’m around computer a lot in the courses which also helps me with my internet skills such as finding information and reliable sources. The courses also have me typing lot of essay which means I am very skilled at typing fast. With the workload piling and piling up it’s impossible for me to do it alone so I have partners who help me out. Communication in this part is very important and I’ve learned from being a leader and being a follower that teamwork is crucial to success. With the flexible courses that I’ve taken I can also provide information on other topics like history, science, math, and so on. Computer themselves aren’t just my specialization.

My major is Professional and Technical writing and is apart of the english department. City Tech offers a bachelor’s in my major. Along with taking a range of english classes you get to choose a specialization. According to New York City College of Technology the reason students need specialization is “to provide depth in a content area, students must complete a minimum of 18 credits in a single professional, scientific, or technical discipline” (New York City College of Technology, 2017, P 90). This major is considered a writing intensive course. The Professional and Technical writing major has three parts. The first part is general education core course. The second part is the required classes for the major. The third part is the specialization.

With my major the jobs I qualify for are jobs that involve communication and writing. Jobs such as secretary, writer, and journalist. I can get these jobs because they involve both writing and communication. To be a secretary you need to able to type up papers, create schedules, and communicating with your boss.

In this major we learn different writing techniques. One class offered is ENG 1151
Introduction to Journalism. This class is described as “an introduction to the history and
principles of journalism and to basic news writing and editing” (New York City College of Technology, 2017, P 92). Another class offered is ENG 2000 Perspectives in Literature. The class summary states “readings in and writings about literature across genres, eras and locales. Themes include family, the individual and society, good and evil, gender, faith and ‘the human heart in conflict with itself.’ Essays and exams based on readings”

My major of Professional and Technical Writing at The New York City College Of Technology is preparing me for my career in many ways. This major is designed to teach students how to communicate clearly and effectively by implementing a variety of tools and media. So basically what that means is that this major will teach students how to develop their communication skills in a professional way both orally and written. According to the City Tech catalog with this major “ Students gain competencies that include writing, editing, problem solving, document design, rhetoric, interpersonal communication, collaboration, specialized expertise, and fluency in modern communication technologies.”(New York City College of Technology, 2017, p. 89). This applies directly to my career of becoming either a magazine editor or a writer for the magazine. With teaching me skills like editing, problem solving, document design, and more it’ll help me put my work into a presentable format.

Not only does the writing portion of this major apply to my career of writing for a magazine but because this major requires you to choose an area of study it basically gives you an expertise in two places. My area of study being computer science I feel like this major is preparing for my career of becoming a programmer by requiring me to take computer programming classes. But the writing portion can also help me in my career towards computer science by helping me write proposals and teaching me how to communicate in a technical sense. Any job regardless of what it is, is going to require communication and that is what this major is teaching me. The catalog states that “The structure of this degree ensures that students who graduate from this program (a) master industry standard applications for professional and technical writing and related technologies, (b) acquire expertise in a professional studies-related, science-related, or technology-related discipline that will give them an edge in the marketplace, and (c) enter a rapidly shifting workplace prepared to negotiate new forms of media with sophistication and confidence.” (New York City College of Technology, 2017, p. 89). This skills can be implemented in a number of fields. My career is not to become a technical writer but end up a writer and a programmer and with this tools it would help me achieve this career.

Essentially I would like to combine both my career in writing and career in computer science into one. I would like to eventually work for a big company like microsoft or even google as a programmer or project manager or both. I think with a combination of both my interests and the education i’m receiving from this major I would be able to do both. I could be a programmer and also write for a tech magazine and I would be able to do so from what I learn in this major.

As a professional and technical writer that specializes in public health. The City Tech English department supplies me with the tools to go beyond writing. The City Tech College Catalog states, “The Professional and Technical Writing program is designed to prepare students to communicate clearly and effectively using a variety of tools and media” (New York City Tech College of Technology, 2017, p. 89). Professional and Technical writing for me is about developing new studies in public health ,spreading awareness on overlooked issues, and being able to present the information in a creative, informative, and positive way. In addition to that, the Professional and Technical writing gives me the versatility to learn many research and writing styles that compliment many industries. With this skill set, “The structure of this degree ensures that students who graduate from this program (a) master industry standard applications for professional and technical writing and related technologies” (New York City Tech College of Technology, 2017, p. 89). The combination of courses (ENG 2720, 3670) HUS 3606 and HSA 3630. The English classes allow me to develop information beyond the basic essay format, and experiment with many types of software that serves vital in many industries. The Humanities course allows me to learn how to indicate and address major health issues, and “Provides students with the knowledge and skill to conduct a screening or intake interview both for individuals and families” (New York City Tech College of Technology, 2017, p. 158). While the health course provides, “Emphasis will be placed on concepts that will allow students to understand the huge, complex, and in many ways unique, health care industry” (New York City Tech College of Technology, 2017, p. 159).

Two years ago, I enrolled in CUNY New York City College of Technology’s (City Tech) first bachelors program in “Professional and Technical Writing (PTW).” I was just in the midst of transferring to CUNY Baruch College to pursue a marketing degree when this program came about. Due to being the first cohort of the PTW program, I was able to craft my own specialization, which is marketing. Merging together my love of writing and marketing was just pure genius. The program allows students to have a basic crash course in professional writing and a specialization in a scientific or technical discipline.

According to the City Tech College Catalog, “The Professional and Technical Writing program “the department has as its mission the enhancement of those imaginative, analytical, reflective and cultural aspects of self generally addressed by liberal studies and within the department’s specific purview, through written language.” (New York City College of Technology, 2017, p. 89) The program has well defined learning outcomes such as, being to comprehend various societal and ethical issues, show that you understand various types of information that can be expressed as multimedia or live in a digital space, just to name a few.

For incoming prospective students who enroll in the program, there are various classes they need to take before they become enrolled in PTW major. The most important classes for students to take are a combination of about 42-45 credits of mostly English, Mathematics, History, and other courses that are approved by the department. Students must show proficiency in reading and writing because those are major requirements for the program.

Once students have successfully completed their requirements they will be able to take the higher courses that relates to the program. The courses include: ENG 3760 Digital Storytelling, ENG 2720 Writing with New Media, and COM 3401 Business and Professional Communication. For example, ENG 3760 Digital Storytelling is a course that teaches students to become creators of their own digital stories, as well as utilizing various open-sourced resources in a digital ecosystem.

Finally, the PTW program will prepare students to be able to join the professional world and work in media related jobs as well as science and technology. Students will be able to compete in the world where there is already so much competition. They will be well versed with using different digital tools and interfaces no matter what field they go decide to go with.
