Digital Entertainment and its Impact on the Human Brain- Taylor Hernandez

The Internet is an increasingly important technology that reaches into many aspects of our lives. For example, we use the Internet to find new information, listen to the latest new songs, discover new trends, get work done, study for tests, and express our feelings. In fact, digital technology and the Internet have become a very important part of how we learn, work, and interact with others. Using the technology gets our cognition going. One category of digital technology that I believe is very important is entertainment. Some of the entertainment technologies that we enjoy every day include: listening to music, playing video games, communicating over social media, laughing at comedy videos, or chilling with streaming video from Netflix. Digital entertainment technology makes it possible for people to listen to music, text, chat, play games, and watch videos almost anywhere: on the bus, on the train, in class, or at home. Because there are many types of digital entertainment, I will focus on digital music and discuss how two-forms of digital music leave different impressions on our memory. In this essay, I argue that listening to purchased digital music, such as MP3s or MP4s from iTunes, has a different effect on our memory than listening to music from a streaming service, such as, Pandora, or Apple Music, because these technologies provide a different listening experience.  In this essay, I will state how listening to purchased music on iTunes is a better listening experience, streaming services such a Spotify is a better experience than listening to purchased music, purchased music is better because you are able to listen to music in the order you want, and how streaming services can easily replace digital downloads.

For example, listening to purchased music on iTunes is a better listening experience, because you do not have to worry about not having unproductive Wi-Fi connection that streaming services are dependent upon. For some people who are unsure what a streaming service is, a streaming service is a tool for transferring data so that it can be processed to the internet. It enables people to listen to some of their favorite music without having to go buy an entire album or song. Streaming services are very popular and are often used for uploading videos, music and other types of live/digital entertainment. When music is being put on a streaming service, the media is put onto the computer so the file can be decoded. Once the file is completely decoded it is then uploaded to the streaming service where it can be heard from millions of people around the world. People who purchase MP3s songs can be accessible through their cellular devices. We can create playlist’s, change the songs as much as we want, and this will enhance the activities that are controlled by our brain.

In my opinion I feel that listening to purchased music is better because it has good quality, you do not have to worry about having Wi-Fi, once purchased it yours forever, and you can listen to the artist it as many times as you want. When listening to purchased music there are several reasons such as its various listening affect, the clarity is much more superior, and there are unlimited genres to choose from. When personally listening to music I look to hear the quality. Music that has a good quality is finer than listening to music that is being streamed because purchased music such as mp3s/mp4s have a much more clear sound. There are no background mistunes and no different voice tunings. I also think that having to purchased music with a finer quality is more better because if you listen to a song on a radio you can purchase that song and have it forever. You can listen to the song as many times as you want and not worry about having to wait for that specific song to come on the radio. With purchased music you can skip songs, create playlists with songs that you like to hear and you can play the songs over and over multiple times as you want. On the other hand I feel that listening to music that is on a streaming service is better because it is free and you do not have to pay for them but the sound quality is poor.

Purchased music is better, because you can listen in the order you want. You don’t have to wait for the song to come back onto the radio and you can skip songs. Playlist is important because it helps keep the listeners organized and up to date with newest songs. Aken stated that, “Playlists create relevance with music by labeling songs and creating groups.” (Aken n.p.) A playlist is a folder that contains a list of music from different genres and can be played in any order that is preferred. It can be listened to on the computer, iPhones, iPads, and another electronically device. being able to listen to your own playlist helps enhance the activities that are controlled by our brain. Listening to music enables us to get many different tasks done. People should listen to purchased music because one thing every body hates about having to listen to online streaming services is the result of receiving poor Wi-Fi connection. Nobody likes to hear music that keeps rebuffing especially if it’s a song that they really like and haven’t heard in a while. Based on an interview I took, this person stated “I would prefer listening to purchased music rather than listening to live streaming services because with live streaming the music can get a little fuzzy and some times the song has a high pitch voice, whereas on the other hand having mp3’s and mp4’s the music sounds clear and there is not special voice affects.” (Cicero-Santalena quest. 6) From another interview person 2 stated “ I do not have time to just sit on a computer and wait for a song to play on YouTube. Its takes forever and sometimes the song turns into a loading error. I rather purchase the song so I always have it and don’t have to worry about waiting for the song to load. I can have it on my tablet and do house work at the same time.” (Indelicato par. 2)

Listening to streamed music on live streaming services such as Spotify, YouTube, and Pandora is better because you can stream music for free without having to pay any thing and there is a large variety of genres to choose from. A lot of people recommend using streaming services when listening to music because they feel that having to pouches music is simply a of just throwing you money into the trash bin. People who do listen to music online like it better because its free, you are not wasting your money, and you can listen to a  million different songs. Many people who listen to music, over time get exposed to different music which then creates new connections to the brain. In an article The Power Of Music’ To Affect The Brain a recent study showed that listen to music can help patients heal and babies that cry when they are a few weeks old were found to contain some of the basic intervals common to Western music. (Mannes par. 1 and 3) Something I found interesting was that listening to music can help stimulate more parts of the brain then any other function of the body. Some genres of music have a very soothing sound such as classical music and relaxation music. When people are listening to an online streaming service, some streaming services will give you an option to create playlists which allows you to control the experience but your still limited to needing connection.

What is the future for listening to music? People who listen to music on live streaming services will be more popular to those who purchase music. Live streaming services will take over having to not be able to purchase music anymore. People will save money and will not have any bills from using their credit cards. What happened if streaming replaces digital downloads? In today’s generation music people are streaming music more than having to go and purchase music. The rate of music being purchase is slowly taking a toll downstream. Most people might feel that they don’t need to be wasting their money on a song that maybe they could   only be listen to once, it is pointless because they don’t need to have their credit card jacked up with tons of money owed due to excessive amounts of music purchases, and there are free services that let you listen without paying anything out of your pocket. On the other hand there has been an increasingly large rate of people listen to streaming services, and has taken place of the amount of music purchasing. For example, according to Dredge, “The boss of major label Warner Music Group has warned rivals to “think very carefully” before restricting the free tiers of streaming services like Spotify, after his company revealed that it now makes more money from streams than from download sales” (Dredge par. 1). So, streaming services are gaining popularity. People that are streaming music using streaming services do not have to worry about buying songs that they could be listening to once, there won’t be any charging fees, and you can only listen to the music of a limited number.

My Decision For Choosing Architectural Technology As My Major and Career! By Taylor Marie Hernandez

My name is Taylor Marie Hernandez and I am in my freshman year at the New York City College of Technology, also known as City Tech. I am 18 years old and currently majoring in Architectural Technology. As a little girl I had developed an interest that went from drawing, to architecture. My early interest was in art. I always loved to draw and whenever I would go to the mall I would stop at a certain stand because I found it cool how the artist would draw all these different pictures. Later on in my childhood when I was in the fourth grade my grandma, my mom and I went to Budday and Schuster Architects because my grandma was building a house next door. Whenever I would go to the architect, I would sit down at the table and my eyes would always draw attention to the architect while he was speaking about the different plans. He would explain the elevations, plans, sections, and where everything would be located. From then on I decided to make this my future goal and I know that this would be something I want to do. I chose this major, because I have an interest in drawing and creating things. I find it interesting how ideas are put down on paper and then just come to life. I want to be even more knowledgeable then I know now, and I want to show people what I am capable of. This is the best career for me, because I will be able to demonstrate to others my many ideas. Also I will be able to make money so I am able to support myself, and I want to explore different things. In this essay, I will provide some background information about the major I have chosen, I will explain my reasons as to why I have decided to pick this major, and I will explain how will I plan to excel in my major as well as my future career.

Before discussing my reasons for entering this major, I will provide some background information about the major. Architecture has been around for many years. Probably since the roman and Egyptian times. At the year of 200, BC Greek builders created cement as a metal structure. This cement was put in place of plaster and other types of weak material. At the time Egyptians used a different kind of cement called gypsum plaster, in Mesopotamia they used bitumen. There are many different types of architecture that have evolved over a period of time. In 3,050 BC to 900, BC ancient Egypt constructed very big triangular prism shaped like objects that are known as the Great Pyramid of Giza. Another type of architecture would be back in 527 to 565, AD where the roman empire has evolved a different sense of style. Instead of using stone, domed roofs, mosaics, and classic forms, they used brick. There are just so many different types of architecture all around the world. Architectural technology, is the application of technology to the design of buildings. It is a component of architecture and building engineering and is sometimes viewed as a distinct discipline or sub-category. Architectural technology is a field that creates plans for houses, buildings, and things of that nature. Once the sketches are drawn out, they are then transferred to the computer where they will eventually become plans, elevations, and sections. When creating different types of blue prints on the computer, you use different programs like Rino, InDesign, Auto CAD, Photoshop, and other types of programs. Finally, after a review of the blueprints, the construction begins and therefor, a new creation will be built. Architectural Technology comes in a variety of different degrees such as Associates degree, Bachelors degree, a degree in Masters, and a License. The Associates Program is a 2-year program where you are taking classes as if you were going into a 4-year program. Students who are taking a 2-year program, have an opportunity to continue with major by taking the 4-year program. As a student in City Tech, some classes I’m current taking now are Design Foundations, Building Technology, Visual Studies, and my basic classes such as English Composition and Precalculus. Later on during the semester you start taking a little bit more challenging classes. For the Bachelors Degree you have to start of by taking the associate degree class for 2 full years and then for your 3rd and 4th year you take classes such as History of New York City Architecture, Structures, Architectural Design 6, or Advance Detailing Studio. In the college catalogue if you look under the Architectural Technology it will explain what classes are needed to take in order to graduate with the degree you want. (College Catalog. 190-194)

There are many different types of architecture. There are architects for landscaping, naval, non landscaping and naval, industrial, and things of that nature. But the main type of architecture that I will discuss is Architects: Non-Landscaping and naval. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics: Occupational Outlook Handbook, non naval and landscaping architects make $35.14 per hour and about $73,090 a year. For this particular job you have to be in college for all 4 years. When you graduate after your 4 years you will receive a bachelor’s degree, From there on, it is required that you intern a firm with this field. Architects have many responsibilities. These responsibilities include “meeting with clients to determine objectives and requirements for structures, estimate the amount of required materials, equipment, and construction time, prepare structure specifications, direct workers who prepare drawings and documents, prepare scaled drawings with computer software and by hand, prepare contract documents for building contractors, manage construction contracts, visit worksites to ensure that construction adheres to architectural plans, seek new work by marketing and giving presentations.” (Occupational Outlook Handbook). Architects are capable of building many different things such as small and big houses, small rooms, hotels, airport, and many things other things for people to live in, play, and work. When architects get assigned a project, there will be late nights where they are trying to do the best that they could by making sure that the work gets done especially when there is a deadline. When architects have a deadline to complete a projects, it is not okay to wait till the last minute and expect to have it done. It is always better to start the project as soon as you are assigned the deadline. You should never wait till the last minute to complete a project especially architects, Another type of occupation that should never wait till the last minute to do something are lawyers. When a lawyer has to go to a court trial they need to make sure that they have lots and lots of evidence, statements, testimonies, and etc.

Becoming an architect requires a lot of school, experience, time and dedication. There is a lot of work ahead when being an architect. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics: Occupational Outlook Handbook, to be an architect you need to go school and get your bachelors degree. Afterward I will then have to take a test called the National Council of Architectural Registration Board (NCARB). When taking the NCARB exam, it requires a lot of time and studying. According to the NCARB site, the test is said to range from 4 to 6 hours and should be scheduled weeks in advance. In this field there are many types of different skills that are needed. These skill include communication, analytical, creativity, organization, visualization, and technical skill. (NCARB. Preparing for exam. par. ) It is very important to be organized when doing this type of work. You need to have all your tools out, and have all of your previous plans away.

The few reasons for why I have decided to choose this kind of major is because ever since I was a little girl, I always had an interest with drawing. No matter where I was, I would always have paper and a writing tool just in case I got board and felt like doing something. When I was about seven years old, I develop interest in drawing. The days I had nothing to do, I would look around my room for objects and pictures, and then try drawing them. My interest in drawing eventually led to a compulsion with architecture during the beginning of the fourth grade. Around the age of nine years, I would go to Buday and Schuster Architects with my grandma and mom. Whenever my grandmother had an appointment to see her architect and discuss her plans, I always tagged along. I would sit down at the table and pay attention as the architect explained the exterior and interior of the blueprints, such as, where the rooms are going to be, how big they will be, what the outside would look like, and more of the overall design itself. When I entered high school I continued to challenge myself by taking up art classes since I wanted to learn different drawing techniques. During my four years in high school I decided to setup a goal for myself by wanting to take up architecture classes and eventually branch off by taking these classes during my years at college. Unfortunately, I wasn’t capable to do that. For 4 years my school decided to ask me why I didn’t take architecture classes if I knew I wanted to take this as a my future career. I explained by telling them how I asked my grade advisor, and the teaches if the school offered architecture classes and how they told me no. Because I am in college, I can fulfill that dream that I got without have the excuses of not doing something I want.

I plan to excel in my major as well as my future career. During my time in college I want to be able to have an internship at one of the best top architect firms where I will be able to show them what I know and I can learn different types of techniques from other architects. From the internship I want to be able to learn many things as possible. Some of the things I want to know is how I can be successful in this field, how to communicate to my clients and my co workers in a professional manner, what I should expect when I go on an interview, how I should dress, and etc. With the skills I learn, I want to be able to carry them with me when I finally get that job I start. As I plan to move forward in this field I want to be able to create my own firm down the line and be one of the top ranking architects on the list. I know I will need a lot of school, time, patience, and guidance to help get me to where I want to be. As I am currently a freshman in this field here at City Tech, I will make it my business to do what it takes to have a successful education and what skill I will develop.

In conclusion, I want to be a very successful person. I want to create my own firm and have people work under me. By wanting to achieve this type of goal, it requires a lot of hard work, dedication, and commitment. But before I do that I will first have to work in a firm as a first year associate working under someone else. Wanting to take up a field like this requires tons and tons of commitment and time. As a freshmen in the architectural field one thing that I realized is that I don’t have a social life because of my commitment and dedication to this field. “A doctor is responsible for one life, while an architect is responsible for millions of lives.” This is true because when an architect is creating a new structure, the architects job is to make sure that everything is followed by regulation and to keep the new creation from falling and destroying millions of lives. A doctor on the other hand is responsible for saving one life at a time. When they are doing a procedure on someone they have to make sure that everything they do is right and that there are no mistakes. Being in this field is something I really want to do because I am able to do something I love.

My Soon to be Life as a Future Architect

My name is Taylor Marie Hernandez and I am an Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) student in my freshman year at the New York City College of Technology (City Tech). I am 18 years old and enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I am majoring in Architectural Technology and want to be a licensed architect when I complete school. I went to Tottenville High School and enjoyed all four years at that institution. Drawing and architecture are an important part of who I am, because they give me a way to demonstrate my creativity. I enjoy the process of sketching my ideas and watching them come to life in the physical world. In this essay, I will explain how drawing and architecture have created who I am and give me a firm direction on what I want to be by talking about how I became interested first in drawing and then architecture, and how I have seized the opportunity to move forward into the field of architecture.

When I was about seven years old, I began to develop what has become a lifelong interest in drawing. Whenever I would go to the mall, I would stop by a certain kiosk where an artist would draw and sell his artwork. As I would watch him practice his art, I would picture myself as a professional artist one day. When I was home and did not have anything to do, I looked around my immediate environment for objects and pictures, I imagined them in my mind, and then, I tried to draw them exactly how I visualized them. Also, I, tried my hand at drawing people. The days I went to the mall and stand by the artists kiosk, not only was he drawing places and objects, but he was drawing people. , The first drawing of a person I did was Miley Cyrus, who portrays the film and television character, Hannah Montana. When I completed each drawing, I would decide if they were good or bad. If they were bad I would try to critique them in a way where the drawing wasn’t so dull and if i didn’t like how it came out at all, then i would just throw it out. This has made me work even hard because I feel that every piece of art should be very creative and very unique from another. . I can connect this to my drawing of Miley Cyrus because whenever I tried to draw her if I didn’t like how the photo was coming out, most likely I would throw it out ad starts al over again. The days I was in school and I had library class, I always took drawing books home so I would be able to practice my drawing skills.

My interest in drawing eventually led to my fascination with architecture, which began when I was in the fourth grade. At that time, I began to wonder how buildings were designed, what materials were used to build them, and what tools were used to construct them. My interest in architecture took place when I was about nine years old and would go to Buday and Schuster Architects with my grandma and mom. Whenever my grandmother had an appointment to see her architect and discuss her plans, I always tagged along. I would sit down at the table and pay attention as the architect explained the exterior and interior of the blueprints, such as, where the rooms are going to be, how big they will be, what the outside would look like, etc. Once we got home, I would go on the computer and research different types of architectural plans. When I found a plan that looked simple, I would sketch it out myself and label where everything is located. When my dad was home he would always be on the computer making different layouts for kitchens. At the time my father worked for a company called Modern Kitchens, and every time he would come from work with a packet of layouts I would look through it and I would take a marker and write all over them. I would label where and what everything is. One day I asked my dad what he was making on the computer. He said he was creating a kitchen layout for the building he was working on. I asked him how he made it and if he can show me how to, and so he did. He showed me what to do and I was really proud of myself for making my first layout.

Recognizing my commitment to drawing and architectural design, I focused on ways to improve my artistic skill and architectural knowledge. By doing this i would look of books, ask people for advice on how I could make my work better, look through the grandmothers set of plans, etc. When I entered high school I continued to challenge myself by taking up art classes since I wanted to learn different drawing techniques. Every time I went to the city I would look up at the tall structures and observe the details and textures that are inside and out. During my four years in high school I decided to setup a goal for myself. During my last three years in high school, my plan was to take up architecture classes. From there I would branch off by taking these classes during my college years. Unfortunately, I wasn’t quite able to do that. For 4 years my school decided to ask me why I didn’t take architecture classes if I knew I wanted to take this as a my future career. I responded to the question by telling them how I asked my grade advisor, and the teaches if the school offered architecture classes and how they told me they didn’t offer it. However, here at NYCCT I have the chance to follow my goal. The classes that I am taking now are a little difficult because in the beginning, you are learning all new material. By the end of the day you have so much information stored in your brain, that you will say to your self, “I’m done. I’ve had enough. Time to go home.” I know because there are days where I get like that.

Now that I am in college, I have the chance to make my goals come to life by working hard and showing people that I have the ability, skill, and dedication to be successful as a future architect. I want to pursue architectural design as my career, which will enable me to create places for people to live their lives in safe and inspired surroundings. My goal is to be the best architect out there and constantly stay on the top of my game. As part of being an architect I want to be able to design houses, building, floor plans, etc. No matter how hard the work may get, I will push myself through every obstacle out there just to achieve my goals and to get to where I want to be. As you were able to see, drawing was a big part of me ever since I was a little girl. I always had an interest in creating different things by using my imagination along with objects I saw around me. I first started out wanting to become a professional artist one day, but then as I got older and more mature, I started to have a different perspective on life and many other options started to come to me. Therefore, I got into doing different types of things on the computer with the use of different software. Fundamentally, it is amazing how you can take something abstract like a design and make it physically real. This is what I intend to do with my work.
