Artist’s statement:

I decided to do this project in the genre of a slide show because videos are a way of informing people and educating them in an accessible way while also asserting images, videos, and voiceovers. In my case, my audience consists of women mainly, therefore, informative videos are very likely to get their attention. I understand that everyone’s case may be different. In the example of Nicki Minaj, she always felt pressured and intimidated by the male rappers at the beginning of her career. However, she stood strong and gave her all to express her talent which led to opening windows for other women in rap. Of course, not every woman’s career is in the music industry so their situation will be different. After watching different kinds of slideshows, I end up with so much wisdom and knowledge, so I’m hoping this one will also be inspirational and teach everyone about ambitiousness and women empowerment. Looking back I believe my main point about Nicki Minaj being a perfect example of an ambitious and talented woman.

The topic that I chose Is very important to me. When I go outside everyday I think about what the world would be like if everyone took the time to take care of it. This is why the topic of Global warming should spoken about everywhere. Global warming Is an issue that has been going on for a very long time, and when I say a long time I mean most of global warming has gone on for the past four decades. Even though global warming can not be prevented, its a problem when us as humans contribute to it. Every time when we go outside we can be contributing to global warming. We can be burning fossil fuels, cutting down trees, even consuming too much. I am here to explain how we can do better to help our planet, and live under better conditions.

As a sophomore in college I feel like I’ve learned a lot about this topic and would like to help enlighten the Freshman who are coming into City Tech. As young adults I feel like it is our responsibility to help create a better environment for ourselves. We have access to technology, books, and tools to confront this issue. When I first came into college I was just like most students. I didn’t know the importance of this topic, but someone came up to me and asked me what I was doing to confront the issue of Global Warming. I told him I wasn’t doing anything, and that I did not know how to help. He gave me a piece of paper with all the things he has done to help out our world. From that day I was inspired to help out our planet, and get as much people as I can to do the same. This is why I have came to out City Tech Freshman, we can change the planet if we try hard enough.

First I will like to talk about what global warming truly is and how it is affecting our planet. Global Warming is the long term heating of Earth’s climate system observed since the pre-industrial period, due to human activities, such as burning fossil fuels, which increases heat trapping greenhouse gas levels in earths atmosphere. One might be wondering why increasing heat is bad for our earth. Here’s an example, polar bears live in the Artic which is a very cold climate. Imagine all the ice started disappearing, and the water started heating up. The polar bears would have no shelter and all of them would die extremely fast. Also extreme heat and poor air quality causes heart and respiratory conditions like asthma, renal failure, and pre term birth. With this being said does it not scare you what can happen if we just sit around and do nothing.

How can we help limit global warming? One way we can help our earth is planting more trees. As trees grow they help stop climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the air, storing carbon in the trees and soil, and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere. Trees help us out everyday. Another way we can help is reducing, reusing, repairing, and recycling. Buying fewer things, shopping second hand, repairing items whenever possible and recycling are all key ways to help. You can also find your own unique way to help out, think outside the box.

I would like to talk about some things I have done since my freshman year at City Tech to help confront global warming. Before I knew how bad I was hurting Our world I used to drive everywhere. I used to drive to the park, drive to the store, and sometimes just drive around for no reason. little did I know this was harming our earth. So what I started doing was biking, and going on walks. Whenever I wanted to go somewhere I would remember walking can help. Another way I decided to help was eating more plant based foods, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and dairy. Eating these foods result in fewer greenhouse gas emissions.  Saving energy at home was also key for me. Now when I wash my clothes I use cold water and airdry them outside. I’ve also invested in led light bulbs to help conserve energy. Notice how everything I am doing saves a lot of money. I’ve also provided a few ted talk videos for us to help explain further what we can do to help. thank you all for listening.

Artist statement

The topic of natural hair is very important to me. Black women’s hair has been outcasted in society for a long time; as it is a complex subject that is not easily understood. It has been seen as everything but beautiful because it doesn’t fit the “standard” definition of beauty. Growing up, we often hear the words messy, frizzy, and “nappy” when our hair is being described. Therefore, making us ashamed of having this unique hair type.

I choose to construct a poem with my audience being city tech freshmen because I wanted to be able to grab their attention from the very first line and maintain it throughout. Citytech is a very diverse school so I know a lot of the students would be able to relate to my topic. I used words that create an image in my readers’ minds. Furthermore, I wanted to be able to capture and explain the beauty of natural hair in words that we didn’t hear when we were young. My goal with this unit was to make sure my intended audience know that they weren’t alone when it comes to the long crucial journey of finally accepting and loving themselves and the eccentric hair that they were blessed with.
