SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT

During my participation in the Service Learning Field Project at Cadman Towers in Brooklyn, our group provided an oral health education presentation focused on denture and implant care. The goal of the activity was to educate residents on proper maintenance, signs of disease, and the importance of oral hygiene in preventing complications.

My role in the project included leading the icebreaker and introduction, assisting throughout the presentation, and delivering the closing remarks. At the beginning of the session, I introduced the topic and engaged the audience to create a welcoming and comfortable environment.  I supported my team by reinforcing key points and assisting with visual aids to ensure the information was clear and easy to understand. I also concluded the session by summarizing the main concepts and encouraging participants to apply what they learned.

My contribution helped improve the overall flow and engagement of the presentation. By creating a positive first impression and maintaining audience interaction, I helped ensure the participants remained attentive and involved. My role in both the introduction and conclusion strengthened the clarity of the presentation and supported effective communication of important oral health information.

Head Start Center

I had a very meaningful experience for my public health project at the East River Child Development Center. I went as a dental hygiene student with my classmates, and we worked with 10 children with special needs, ages 4 to 5 years old. At first, I felt a little nervous, but the children were very kind and full of energy.

We talked to them about oral health in a simple and fun way. We showed them how to brush their teeth and explained why it was important to keep their teeth clean. We used easy words, pictures, and demonstrations so they could understand better. Some children needed more help and attention, but we were patient and supportive.

This experience helped me understand how important it was to adapt communication and care for each patient, especially children with special needs. I learned to be more patient, gentle, and creative when teaching. It made me feel happy to see the children smile and try to follow our instructions.

Overall, this visit was very special to me. It helped me grow as a future dental hygienist and reminded me that every patient deserved care, respect, and understanding.
