CHANEL

One of the researches that I have done in my Graphic Communications class was on the Chanel logo. In doing this research, this helped me to see and get to experience what goes in to making a logo. I have learned there are so many aspects, ways, and thoughts in doing a logo design.

Coco Chanel’s Logo

Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel is the founder of the most well known designer label Chanel in 1909. The brand originated in France. Coco Chanel opened up her first shop at 21 rue Cambon in Paris, which only sold hats under the name “CHANEL Modes” which was favored by most French actresses. In 1912, Coco Chanel opened up her a new boutique in Deauville, France. Her style was simple and elegant. Her garments were proved revolutionary and changed the way women viewed their bodies and the way of life.  During this time, the very early stages of her business, she did not have a logo as of yet.

There have been many thoughts about how Coco came up with her logo. Though, she did design her logo herself, there have been very similar designs in the Chateau de Cremate, Nice.

Some have said that the Chateau de Cremate had given Coco Chanel this logo, which could have been possible. The logo is 2 interlocked opposed C letters, one facing the left, and the other facing the right, for “Coco Chanel.”

In 1915, Chanel opened her first Couture House in Biarritz, France. Tuesday, November 18th, 1924, Chanel inc. filed the trademark applications to the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office.) The logo and trademark were not registered until after the Chanel shops were established. In February 1925, both the Chanel trademark and the logo were awarded, as well as the perfume label trademark, which was introduced in 1926.
