  • COM 1403 Introduction to Communication in Healthcare Professions

Introduction to the study and practice of communication for health professionals. Topics include listening, adapting your message, informative presentations and role-play exercises. Communication issues particular to health professions are a focus, including nursing, radiology, dentistry, optometry, health and human services and health administration. Students practice clear, purposeful and compassionate communication in face-to-face and mediated situations.

  • COM 3401 Business and Professional Communication

Principles of communication within organizations. Topics and activities may include organizational communication and communication theory, group problem solving, case studies, interviewing, and formal presentations. Prerequisites: ENG 1121 or higher; or department approval or COM 1330 or higher

  • COM 1330 Public Speaking

Fundamental principles of speaking in public situations and the preparation and delivery of informative and persuasive presentations. Subjects include ethics in public speaking, audience analysis, selecting and researching speech topics, constructing well-reasoned arguments, extemporaneous delivery, and peer evaluation. Students are expected to develop outlines and speaking notes, use visual aids, and improve on verbal and nonverbal delivery skills. Prerequisite: CUNY proficiency in reading and writing
