Case Study #1

A 53 years old Hispanic female with the medical condition of iron deficiency, allergic asthma, and Celiac disease. The patient is taking iron for supplements from OTC. The patient had asthma since she was 30 years old and it’s triggered by an allergic reaction to soy and wheat. Last time she used a rescue inhaler was in 4 months ago. The patient is on the gluten-free diet due to Celiac disease. Symptoms to the glutens are abdominal bloating and diarrhea. Patient has generalized severe abrasion and erosion on the facial surfaces. The patient complains hypersensitivity of the tooth. After habitual and dietary assessments, further information was found about the patient frequently eating acidic fruits such as grapefruits and strawberries. The patient is also using heavy pressure when brushing teeth. The patient was referred to Dentist for the abrasion and erosion evaluation. Recommended patient to use lighter pressure strokes with modified bass technique and fluoride mouth rinses such as Listerine Total care to prevent root caries. The patient had good oral hygiene with a minimal plaque on the sextant 5. Scaled 4 quadrants with ultrasonic and hand scale, polished and applied fluoride varnish.

Case Study #2

A 27 years old Asian female with moderate horizontal bone loss confirmed by exposed FMS. The patient also has a fusion of #22 and #23. Heavy subgingival generalized calculus and localized supragingival calculus on lingual of sextant 5. No possible caries are found clinically and radiographically. Scaled UR/LR quadrants on the first visit with Ultrasonic and hand scaler. On the second visit, reduced gingival inflammation with slight bleeding upon exploring still present on the previously treated UR/LR. The patient was recommended to use anti-gingivitis mouth-rinse such as Listerine with ADA seal. Scaled UL/LL quadrants with ultrasonic and hand scaler. Polished with fine paste and fluoride varnish applied.
