Fluorosis is not a disease, and it is a cosmetic condition. The teeth could appear white, yellow, brown, or black spots for people with fluorosis. It usually does not affect the function of teeth or cause pain. Fluorosis is caused by excessive fluoride consumption during the first eight years of life.

As a dental hygienist, helping patients to prevent fluorosis is very important.

  • Advise children cannot brush teeth more than two times a day with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Apply no more than a pea-sized amount of toothpaste to the toothbrush
  • Encouraging the child to spit out the toothpaste rather than swallow it
  • Should not exceed drinking fluoridated water

Smoking has many harmful effects on our oral and body health. As dental professionals, what we can do is to find out if our patients smoke and if so, inform them about the dangers of smoking so that we can help reduce the number of smokers.  We must always advise them:

“It’s never too late to quit.”
