City Tech’s Writing Center is a collaborative space dedicated to fostering the growth of our students as writers. We are not simply reserved for students “struggling” with their writing; we believe every student, regardless of experience or expertise, needs a reader.
With this guiding philosophy, our tutors aim to lead with listening and accommodate each student writer with an approach suitable to their context.
We strive to create an environment where our student writers feel truly heard — and are encouraged to understand and articulate their thoughts with greater clarity as we work together to demystify the work of writing.
Tutors
Amelia Christmas Gramling teaches composition at City Tech and Hunter College. She earned her MFA in Nonfiction Writing at the University of Iowa, where she tutored and taught literature, creative writing, and writing for podcasts/radio. She has experience demystifying admissions essays and helping students come up with knock-out personal statements.
Charles Colwell is an interdisciplinary scholar and ethnographer. He holds a PhD in Music Composition from the CUNY Graduate Center. He has taught Music at the City College of New York and worked as a writing consultant at The Graduate Center. His research explores how Costa Rican naturalists employ vocal imitation as way of knowing birds and understanding their singing.

Jessica Goldschmidt is an adjunct professor of English at City Tech. She has worked in writing pedagogy as an undergraduate at Brown University and a graduate student at CalArts. She likes working with students on personal writing, from artist statements to narrative essays. Jess is a writer and choreographer in various spaces around NYC.
Jessica Penner loves to work with writing of all kinds, from narrative essays to short fiction to research projects. Currently, she teaches academic and creative writing at City Tech. She has taught ESL at Long Island Business Institute, 32BJ (a local labor union), and James Madison University. She holds an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College.
Julia Ait-Ziane is a life-long New Yorker with 20+ years of experience helping students reach their full reading and writing potential. She has taught throughout the five boroughs, from the Brooklyn Public Library to St. Francis College. Julia teaches composition and tutors for the ESOL program at City Tech. She has both a BA and an MFA in Creative Writing.
Kate Peters is a writer, educator, and editor living in New York City. She received her MFA in Writing from Sarah Lawrence College in 2024. In her free time, she loves dancing, reading love poems, and looking at art.
Sa’ada Muntasser is an Adjunct Lecturer in English at City Tech. She has an MA in Applied Linguistics from Teachers College, Columbia U. She was an English Language Fellow with the U.S. Department of State in the Kingdom of Bahrain 2017-2019. Sa’ada has experience teaching ESL in NYC colleges and language centers. She is a native speaker of Arabic, standard and dialectal.
