Mission Statement

The City Tech Writing Center (CTWC) is a collaborative space dedicated to fostering the growth of student writers. We offer one-to-one tutoring, workshops, and resources for all disciplines and modalities – including for writing outside of academia – to help our writers develop skills they can carry into their professional futures.

At the heart of our approach is the belief that every writer, regardless of experience or expertise, needs a reader. With this guiding philosophy, CTWC tutors aim to lead with listening and accommodate each writer with an approach suitable to their context. Whether you’re at the initial brainstorming or final revision stage of your writing, we are excited to hear what you have to say. We strive to create an environment where writers feel truly heard and are encouraged to articulate and understand their thoughts with greater clarity as we work together to demystify the work of writing.

For students, we offer:
  • one-on-one tutoring: see the WC Online link on the right to book an appointment.
  • specialized writing workshops: topics include how to revise an  essay, how to get started when you’re stuck, and how to keep a reader engaged.
  • online resources: these include both video and text-based resources for help reading and understanding assignments, drafting papers, using gender-inclusive language, revising, and proofreading. Check out the links under Tools & Resources.
For faculty:

Referrals from instructors are vital to our continued success and growth. Please continue encouraging students to visit us! We love to point out that every writer needs a reader and we are not a place simply reserved for students “struggling” with some aspect of their writing.

To maintain our ability to serve the entire campus community, we ask that the following policies be followed by any instructors who wish to require their students to use our services as part of their curriculum. Failure to give us proper notice will likely lead to difficulties for students, instructors, as well as us in the Writing Center.

Required Writing Center visits

At the moment, the Writing Center is not equipped to accommodate instructor requirements that mandate their entire class visit the Writing Center for every major assignment. This would go against our mission to serve the entire CityTech community. Instead, we recommend instructors:

  • Suggest that students visit the Writing Center for extra credit***
  • Require students visit the Writing Center once during the semester (students responsible for timing, i.e. not at same time)***
  • Refer any individual students who may require more writing support to visit the Writing Center

*** Instructors are expected to inform the Writing Center before implementing any such class policy by emailing writingcenter@citytech.cuny.edu. We ask that you also share your major assignment prompts to the Writing Center so we have all the relevant context for when your students come in. Please note that tutors do not disclose information regarding grades or grading practices.

We can provide you with confirmation that a student attended a tutoring session; however, per our Privacy Policy, we will not provide any additional detail about what was discussed.

Class visits

Depending on availability, we are able to visit classrooms and Zoom classes to inform your students about the Writing Center. Please reach out to writingcenter@citytech.cuny.edu for more information.

Class workshops

We are currently piloting classroom workshops that target a specific skill (citations, RAB layout, proofreading, etc.), and are happy to partner with faculty members who are interested in working with a tutor to tailor workshops for their class’s specific needs. Workshop availability is dependent on tutor availability. Please reach out to writingcenter@citytech.cuny.edu for more information.
