Reflection #3

Think about a time when you joined a new group activity (maybe a team, religious retreat, club, or workplace).

  • How did you feel when you first joined?
  • Do you recall a moment when you felt like you were part of the group?
  • What benefits did you get from participation in the group?
  • What can you do to help yourself feel like part of a group at City Tech?

When I first joined a new group, I always felt excited and nervous at the same time. There were many times when I felt like I was part of the group, especially when we started communicating more, helping each other, and working together toward the same goal. However, there were also times when I had challenges getting along with, getting to know, and working with people in my group or team.

I believe that things take time, so I took my time to learn about the people in my groups or teams and find the best ways to communicate and work together. One of the most important benefits I gained from participating in a group or team was learning how to communicate and work with different types of people. It also helped me become more comfortable working with others and understand the importance of teamwork.

How can I help myself feel like part of a group at City Tech? For me personally, I would join academic clubs and attend City Tech events to learn more about City Tech, meet other students and professors, and build connections. I believe that participating in these activities will help me feel more comfortable and become part of the City Tech community.

When I first joined my high school coding club, I felt nervous because I didn’t know anyone and thought everyone was better than me.

I started feeling like part of the group during our first hackathon when my teammate asked me to debug her code. She trusted me, and we actually won 3rd place together. That moment made me realize I belonged.

From participating, I gained coding confidence, made 2 close friends, and learned how to present projects. It also helped me decide to major in Cybersecurity at City Tech.

At City Tech, I plan to feel part of a group by attending CT101. I’ll also use OpenLab to connect with other CT101 students, participate different curricular and extracurricular activities to help myself feel like part of city tech community.

So, the first time I ever joined a club was in high school. It was a chess club, and at teh time of me joining it…I was not that skilled at the craft. But after just one day of being there, I felt extremely welcomed. They made me feel a part of the group extremely fast.

In that club I had the privelige of meeting friends that I still talk to today but in terms of the contents of the club itself- I didn’t really get better at chess.

At City Tech, I can step out of my comfort zone and invest my time in fully communicating with my peers to help myself feel more included. It can be hard especially when you’re entering a space that you’re completely new to, but thats the beauty of it all.

First club I ever joined the Chess Club. I already had an interest in chess from a few years back so It was easy to fit in.

The moments I felt apart of the group was being able to do on demand analysis in my head with others when spectating a game, or when playing an opponent in the club.

The main benefit was a sense of community, and a sense of confidence.

At city tech I can use the skills I learned in participation and public communication

The first time I joined a group was in the church i go to today. When i first came, everything was new to me, the language, the culture and everything else. So i had to manage a way to learn how to speak English which was very difficult for me and i wanted to belong there since i could not speak the language. I felt part of the group the moment I started speaking English—today i don’t really know all about English however i felt i progressed. My English was really bad and today i am still learning the grammar and everything else. To be part of City Tech, i would try to make new friends, learn more about the clubs that they offer such as the BMI,Ai and automation club.

When I was 16 years old i joined as an alter girl in my church. I felt very nervous when i first joined due to me not talking to anyone there, the pressure to get things right and the pressure i felt due to my age, i felt like i had to know how to do everything. A moment where i felt like i was a part of the group was when mass was about to start and we were all helping each other get into positions. I felt a part of the group because it was one of the first times where i was able to communicate with the rest without feeling any type of anxiety. Some benefits I got from my participation in the group was that I was able to talk to people of different age groups and i was able to socialize in a setting that I was unfamiliar with. Something i could do to make myself a part of a group at City Tech is just continuously show up and attend social events and even academic events especially the ones that require teamwork.
