Strengths

My biggest strength is my ability to learn. Throughout my life, I have been quick to absorb information presented to me. I am proud to say that I achieved the highest GPA in my nursing program graduating class. This is not to say that GPA is everything; I know that it isn’t. However, my ability to score highly in nursing school gives me the confidence to practice properly in any position that I may work in throughout my career. I know that I have the theoretical knowledge of nursing; all that’s left to do is apply it.

Another strength that was hinted to in my introduction is how tech-savvy I am. If I can build computers, learning how to use any electronic devices that I may encounter as a nurse should be a breeze. I view this as a strength because technology is becoming increasingly incorporated into the field of nursing. Some devices that have been introduced to the field of nursing relatively recently include automated IV pumps, portable monitors, smart beds, and electronic health records. EHRs in particular give a lot of older nurses headaches, but as a young nurse, documenting in the computer feels like second nature. Furthermore, I hope to work as a dialysis nurse in the future, a position that requires proficiency in utilizing a dialysis machine. I feel like my affinity to technology will help me easily become proficient in this position.

Finally, I believe my people skills, particularly with the elderly, is a strength that is very necessary in the field of nursing. As my grandfather ages, he has begun to require a lot of assistance in everyday life. As the nurse in the family, I have taken it upon myself to take care of him. Through this experience, I have learned how to communicate well with him, which has in turn made me confident in caring for older adults. Being able to communicate with older adults is very useful in nursing because the population is aging. A large percentage of patients in hospitals or nursing homes are elderly. Thus, I believe my communication skills with the elderly and general enjoyment of their company will come in handy as a nurse.
