(3) Read textbook excerpts: ch. 1 “Intro to Legal Research” overview & part A; ch. 2 “Legal Authorities and How to Use Them,” parts B & C.

DUE TH SEPT 4: (1) Read textbook 3 pp. 41-75 (Court Decisions) (textbook available in college library reserve collection); (2) meet in library 2:15pm OR 3:05pm (as discussed in class) for research exercise!
DUE TU SEPT 9: (1) Read textbook ch. 18, part B, “Diagram of a Decision” including sample case (pp. 365-368).
DUE TH SEPT 11: (1) Study for Quiz #1! All notes etc. through end of Tu Sept 9 class. (See “Class notes & materials” page, they’re all there!) (2) On case briefing, read textbook ch. 18 overview and parts A & C (in 9th ed, pp. 366-387 incl. sample briefs),. available in college library, from reserve materials at circulation desk. (3) Join OpenLab and our course site!
DUE TU SEPT 16: Read, mark (with components), and try briefing Lisa L. v. Anthony H.! Here is the case brief format, you are welcome to handwrite it right on there, or type if you prefer (be sure to include all components). Please bring a paper copy to submit in class on Tuesday!
DUE TH SEPT 18, 11:30am!! Read, mark (with components), and brief Trivino v. Jamesway! Here is a MS Word template you can use to type the brief, or you are welcome to handwrite it. By 11:30am, please email me your typed brief as an attached Word document (NOT a link or pdf) OR leave a paper copy in my mailbox in the department office! We’ll review them together in class!
DUE TH SEPT 25, 2:30pm!! We will NOT meet as a class! Instead, please read and brief People v. Neulander — here is a MS Word template brief format you can use to type the brief, or you are welcome to type your own document (please follow the format), or handwrite it. You can use this case citation (it’s already in the template): People v. Neulander, 34 N.Y.3d 110 (2019). By 2:30pm Thursday Sept 25, please submit your brief, either by emailing it to me as an attached Word or pdf document OR leave a paper copy in my mailbox in the department office — that counts as your attendance in Thursday’s class! (though you’re welcome to submit it any day or time before 2:30pm on Thursday.) You are also welcome to meet with me in the department office (N622) on Thursday Sept 25 during our scheduled class time to discuss your Neulander or any other briefs, or anything else, and I am happy to provide guidance! It’s optional!

FOR TU & TH OCT 21 & 23: In prep for our visits to the Kings County Supreme Court Law Library, check out its website; especially the library’s history! Meet at Namm entrance on those days! (300 Jay St.)
