Hello Students!

On Thursday November 6, we’ll have the pleasure of being joined (virtually) by a guest speaker, Talent Acquisition Manager Kate Dove!  Kate has many years of experience in employee recruitment, so she’s read LOTS of resumes and cover letters, and interviewed BAZILLIONS of candidates. She can provide tremendously valuable guidance on what to do, and not to do, as you try to land a job!  She REALLY wants to provide information that will be useful to you, so PLEASE, by 5pm on Wednesday, November 5, please “reply” to this post with one (or more) questions you’d like her to answer!  Here are instructions on how to reply. This is a homework assignment!  Worth 5 points toward your homework grade.

Thanks!  KC

Question for Kate Dove

What is one common mistake you see candidates make specifically during a virtual interview that they wouldn’t make in person?

In your opinion, what is the single most important element of a cover letter that makes a recruiter stop and read the rest of it?

What are the top three things candidates must do to ensure their resume passes through an Applicant Tracking System effectively?”

Timekeeping Assignment

I kept track of Friday afternoon-evening 10/9/25

Time  Description  Duration
12pm-2:30pm I deep cleaned my room. I did tasks such as organizing my closet and drawers, vacuuming, mopping, throwing out unnecessary items, etc.  2.5
2:30pm-2:50pm I took a shower. 0.30
2:50pm-3pm I blow-dried my hair and straightened it.  0.20
3pm-3:20 I went to pick up 2 friends and we went to Kings Highway.  .30
3:20-3:30 We went to Tjmaxx and looked around the store. We left without buying anything 0.20
3:30-4 We went to Target and we all bought a couple of items. 0.5
4-4:20 We bought Starbucks that was inside the target and we talked for 20 minutes 0.30
4:20-4:25 I got a call from my mother that she was unavailable to take my sister to dance practice and she asked me to bring her. I agreed.  0.1
4:25-5 I said bye to my friends and drove home. 0.60
5:15-6:30 I drove from Brooklyn to Queens so my sister could go to her dance class.   1.25

I enjoyed keeping track of my time because I realized how much time I spent doing daily tasks and how it all adds up. I understand why employers would want their employees to do it but it also seemed slightly unnecessary to document the same things I do over and over again. I also realized how much time adds up when you live in a congested area and spend a lot of time sitting in traffic and looking for parking. It puts things into perspective on how much time is wasted.
