I made the decision to go back to school on December 31, 2017 on the beach of a tropical island while waves crashed at my feet. Planning logically, I sat down and added all my collegiate credits so I could analyze the quickest path to graduate under a major. With all my Health Sciences credits the only two logical majors were “Medical Imaging Technician” or “Nursing.” As I shared this information with only a few people, a good friend of mine invited me to dinner. At this dinner, with the straightest face he said to me “You’re not going to be a technician, you are going to be a Nurse, and that is it. Even if you’re the head of any medical imaging department at the most prestigious hospital, that is going to be your ceiling. As a nurse that will be the beginning of a career that can take you anywhere you want to.” This changing of my life path has already started to bear fruit as I’m already surrounded by people that not only want to see me succeed but genuinely care about my wellbeing. Honestly, there is no other place I’d rather be, reaffirming I made the right decision. — Jose Cruz, City Tech Nursing Student
Hi my name is Zoe Edery! I’m going into my 2nd semester in the nursing program at City Tech. What brought me to nursing is that I want to help others when they can’t help themselves. I’ve work with autistic children who make me so happy every time I see them. I feel they taught me who I am today and I truly want to continue helping people all the time. Also the program has been hard; you have to do the readings but it’s 100% doable! You guys will do great. — Zoe Edery, City Tech Nursing Student
My name is Niloufar Ghazali. I am 27 years old and married. I had a bachelor’s in industrial design and before nursing school, I worked fulltime in the Department of Design & Construction (DDC). But for the reasons that I will explain later, I decided to be a Nurse. One of my old friends had a very bad accident in 2013 and she had to have surgery on her feet. During the time that she was in the hospital, I noticed how the nurses’ job is critical. Nurses always inform us regarding the situation of our friend in the operating room, which reduced our anxiety and stress. After surgery, the nurse did great post-operative care for my friend and helped her to stay on her feet again and walk. Having the opportunity to stay with my friend in the hospital during her recovery after surgery, I learned more about the health care environment. I felt that I belong to this environment. Also, I couldn’t see myself working 8 hours a day behind the monitor and being isolated in office for the rest of my life. I am a people person, love to communicate with them, help them. That is why I decided to change my career and become a Nurse. I got accepted to the NYCCT Nursing program last semester with a GPA of 4.0 and a TEAS score of 85.— Niloufar Ghazali, City Tech Nursing Student
