Design Intern

Michael Rose |  NYU’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences

Michael Rose, composer, Fulbright Scholar and PhD candidate at NYU’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciencesis currently seeking up to 4 interns to help design graphics, type, video and props for an opera being performed in December 2019. This is a great opportunity for someone who would like to have credentials in stage design and ambient design for theater and opera.

Primary responsibility of the intern, or interns, is the creation of projected images, lighting and artistically-rendered subtitles for the opera The Suit. Performances begin Dec. 5, so the majority of the work must be completed by then. Some adjustments might be needed for subsequent performances. Time permitting, other aspects/tasks related to the opera’s visuals/staging may be worked on by the intern as well. The intern would be welcome to also help design props and audience collateral. The intern will collaborate with their City Tech advisor and the opera’s creators and performers: Michael Rose, composer; Richard Pels, librettist; and an ensemble of Korean instrumentalists and pansori singer. Performances will take place at NYU, Bronx Community College, Korea Society, others TBD (the creators are in talks for further performances in the northeast and at Korean arts festivals). Each performance space has different lighting and resources, and projections will need to follow the singer’s pace, so the intern or interns’ work will have to be to some degree adaptable. This is a unique opportunity for an intern to be involved with, and perhaps put their own stamp on, a new opera, and to gain exposure in NYC’s art world, academia, and beyond.

Pay: no pay – -it’s for credit (3 credits). But if additional future performances are scheduled and are accompanied by grants or stipends, that may allow for some monetary compensation for performers and interns.

Students and recent graduates with experience in graphic design are encouraged to apply.
