Discussion 11 B – Guen Fung

  • Design trend in terms of food advertisement, how vintage ads displays their inventions of foods, such as cereal that has some kind of stigma behind it such as a doctor approval that this is better than eating an apple. Compared to now, where we get food advertisements that wouldn’t claim a food would make you healthier, but focuses on a feels good aspect such as a plant based burger.
  • The idea behind this is the amount of ads I seen on the TV, magazines, subways, ect… has changed over time as a child compared to now where the industry of food advertisement has evolved in a way that children, teenagers and adults can relate more. Example – less children watches traditional TV and food advertisement was huge back in 2000’s with cereal, fast food places such as McDonalds giving toys, candies.
  • Early 2000’s to 2010 to 2015 to now. Platform usage of entertainment has changed, less on traditional cable TV to Mobile devices and streaming services doesn’t really do paid ads if it’s a paid service.
  • Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, The Founding and Manifesto of Futurism (1909), the purpose of the reading with the progressive society changes how futurism works and methods. The ability and direction of the society dictates where design is heading. This could be from facts about a products to a look of a product.
  • Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, written by Marshall McLuhan and his medium is the school of thought I would like to know more about. The exponentional growth mention from the pervious bullet point and how this relates to being an extention of our arms as a designer.
  • My theory is that people are getting more knowledge and exposure in terms of health consequences from family and friends. The knowledge that long term of bad food is bad for your health is rapidly getting reminded. But on the other side of the coin, the industry for food is making it more and more appealing to eat their food, opposing to the health aspects.

Discussion 11B

Kadir Nelson is the designer who has piqued my curiosity. Kadir Nelson is a painter, illustrator, and novelist residing in Los Angeles who is most known for his drawings that have appeared on the covers of The New Yorker magazine and Michael Jackson and Drake’s albums. Kadir Nelson’s art piques my curiosity since it has a certain quality to it. It tells a narrative and paints a wider image than simply a painting or a design when you look at it. He’s also an African-American designer, therefore I’m interested in learning more about his work. Portraits of humans are a unique design trend that Kadir Nelson employs. I admire how he used that method to draw the audience’s attention to a larger image.” Design as Art by Bruno Munari,” a theory that pertains to design, is a theory that correlates with Kadir Nelson’s artwork. “Today’s designer reestablishes the long-lost connection between art and the public, between live people and art as a living creature,” says the designer.

Discussion 11b

A designer that I find very interesting is Milton Glaser.  I have been raiding about him and his work and I would like to explore his work in detail. I find his work interesting because I like how simple some of his design is but also very beautiful because he played well with colors and the fonts to make the design stand out. A specific time in Milton Glaser’s career that I find very interesting was when he received the 2009 National Medal of Arts from president Barack Obama. I think that his designs relate to a lot of the things we have discussed this semester. Specially, design that is evolving with time but also design that after a long time is still very powerful. A perfect example to this is Milton Glaser’s ” I love NY” logo that he made on 1977. A particular text that we discussed that I would like to learn more about is Rhetoric of the Image by Roland Barthes, this article taught me a lot about the hidden messages in images. The design that I am considering for my final is a design that has impact humanity and perhaps even change the way we see the world today.

Yiqiang Wang-Discussion 11

  1. The designer I’m interested in is Seymour Chwast
  2. Seymour Chwast’s works have strong colors and humorous cartoon style. Although his works are relatively simple in form, if you look carefully, you will find that there are many deep meanings and personal ideas. It is these characteristics of Seymour Chwast’s works that attract me.
  3. Seymour Chwast founded push pin studios with several other designers in 1954. Seymour Chwast created many unique illustration styles and unconventional works during his studio.
  4. Seymour Chwast’s works have many deep meanings, so it is very helpful for me to read about semiotics and analyze the information in images.
  5. The rhetoric of the image by Roland Barthes and the course in general linguistics by Ferdinand de sausurre are my favorite readings in this class
  6. Now it is still difficult for me to design my own theory, but I will do more research and try my best to formulate my own theory.

Week 11 Discussion

1 I am a little interested in a magazine called Girl’s Life. it is an American teen magazine.
2 The way the girls dress, dress up, and the big smiles on their faces make me curious to open this magazine to see what’s inside about girls’ fashion styles, celebrity news, crafts, party ideas for having fun with friends, and advice on everything in girls’ lives
3 No particular design trends have been found yet. In recent years, their logo has become more concise form “girl’s life” to only two letters “GL”. The overall typography has also become more minimalistic.
4 I think these magazine cover designs can be perceived with the theory of Walter Gropius that we read earlier. These magazines document the lives and societies of girls. These journals are also closely related to linguistics and typography.
5 These magazines use different colors, fonts, and font sizes for emphasis, and really like to zoom in on the numbers
6 I don’t have a theory for the design I’ve chosen for the time being. I also need some searching and research to understand and create a new theory.

Week 11 Discussion

  • The designers that interests me is Keith Haring. Another design trend im interested in is graffiti.
  • What draws me to Keith Haring is the color, simplicity of designs and the different graphic styles and stories they tell. Im also interested in graffiti because of its nature of being street art. Its a creation of courageousness that has a style im a fan of.
  • Im not sure which time frame in particular but im thinking Keith Harings 1982 Andy Mouse.
  • We have discussed linguistics, systematic techniques and designing for a purpose.
  • Josef Muller Brockmann and the grid and design philosophy, Walter Gropius and designing for a purpose to sole problems and to portray the events happening within the world, and Roland Barthes Rhetoric of an image.
  • Currently I dont have a theory formulated for my choice of design.

Iqra Bhati – Discussion 11B

  1. I recently discovered this website, https://www.kaybigknifedesign.com/, in my last class, where I found something that I was interested in. This designer’s work is very stunning. Her creations are all very unique, incorporating a variety of colors and forms. I adore the way she incorporates animals, plants, and the environment into her art. In the Japanese anime, The Terrain of the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation,
  2. The floral arrangement is stunning. This also makes me remember how much I enjoy painting flowers when I’m bored. After reading my discussions, everyone knows what I’m talking about.
  3. Everything I see on this website was designed by the designer, which piques my curiosity about this work. With these illustrated pieces of art, she can show off all of her hard work. I’ve just become a big fan of the illustration program I’ll be using for my project. My favorite piece of art from the designer’s website is her personal project artwork.
  4. This has been my favorite class since the first day since I have learned something new in every class from all of the reading I’ve completed so far. It gives the impression of learning about design, what design is, and so on. It has been extremely beneficial to me in learning about the designer lifestyle, which is something that we will all be dealing with in the future as students in this course.
  5. All of the reading I’ve completed in the first 1,2,3,4,5 weeks has been a favorite of mine. Language is one of my favorite topics to read about. This reading brings back memories of my own life.
  6. Also, reading Roland Barthes’ Rhetoric of the Image provided me with a wealth of information and sources for studying and learning about the advertisement. Prof. I’m happy to be a part of this communication design theory class. I would like to use her design for my final. but I don’t have a theory about the design I’ve picked at the moment.

Discussion 11B – Ebony Derrick

  1. I’m interested in cubism and pointillism and how it changed the role of art and graphic design.
  2. Cubism has been an interest I’ve had in art and design because of the use of abstract structures and shapes being put together to create a completely different and unique art piece. Pointillism has also interested me because it’s fascinating that out of small dots on different types of surfaces can create such wonderful art and designs.
  3. There were a few designs and trends that fits into both of my choices that I’m interested in, but to narrow down my choices I’ll be doing some more research.
  4. Both cubism and pointillism can relate to and can be separated and isolated like the readings “Rhetoric of the Image” by Roland Barthes, “TypoPhoto” by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, and “On Typography” by Herbert Bayer have done and described in them.
  5. I believe that “TypoPhoto” is a great reading to compare to both cubism and pointillism, and can be used to be more in depth with both art and desifn movements.
  6. I believe I can create a new theory with the right amount of research.

Sadman Hafiz-Discussion 11b

  1. I’m interested in exploring surrealism. I have encountered several surrealistic designs and paintings recently in my previous classes. I was instantly hooked on it because of the uniqueness and the deepness of the surreal works.
  2. The reason for my interest in surrealism is because the works highlight very strong meanings in a visual manner which forces the audience to realize things that they would not realize normally. Surrealist paintings have no bounds and artists can use any kind of elements they want to create meanings within meanings. I have also worked on a project last semester, it was a drawing that used surrealism, I think I have shared it in the very first discussion that we had for this class.
  3. It’s a little difficult to find recent trends since surrealism was invented in 1924 by Andre Breton but there have been many surrealist graphic designs and paintings done by different artists and designers which I can look into. I can also use previous trends that followed surrealism.
  4. I think these designs or artwork can be perceived through Walter Gropius’s theories that we read at beginning of the semester. He mentioned that all forms of artwork and design should solve problems and highlight problems that society needs to know about. I believe Surrealistic works do a lot of these, works that I have seen symbolize life, society, and mental health and it does it in such a strong visual manner that the audiences can’t ignore.
  5. I believe that Barthes’s rhetoric of the image can be a very interesting reading to use on surrealism. I can try to use his points to try a breakdown of the elements used in surrealist works. Some of the graphic designs that use surrealism even have text on them so it will be nice to see how it works out.
  6. I can hopefully formulate a theory of my own but will definitely need to do more research.

I am not sure if surrealism is a topic I can use for the finals. Most of the works done on surrealism are before the 80s and even the artists and designers that I found so far are also from before the 80s. I would like to know what you think professor.

Angela Iacono-Discussion 11

  1. I love impressionistic paintings and I think it would be interesting to explore that particular art movement in greater detail. However, I’m aware that we must choose something from 1982 and beyond. So I will do more brainstorming in the future.
  2. I love the way the paintings look, they’re not always very clear but you get the impression of something. The impasto, texture of the paint, also stands out to me and the soft details of those particular paintings are interesting to look at.
  3. Claude Monet stands out and Pierre-Auguste Renoir as well.
  4. The designs can relate to the things we’ve read this semester.
  5. I think the rhetoric of the image as well as the reading from Ferdinand Saussure are the ones I understand the most and interest me the most.
  6. As of right now I do not have any theories regarding the impressionism art movement however, I do think that the paintings can’t be looked at objectively speaking. This is because impressionism paintings really rely on the viewer/audience to look at and think about what they are consuming. The texture of the brushstrokes showing and unblended colors means that there aren’t clear structures or figures in the paintings and that requires the viewer to add their own interpretation of what’s going on in the painting.
