Week#7 Response – Xiaofei Wang

After reading McLuhan and Fiore’s “The Medium is the Massage”, I understand the connection between people and medium is that human beings create technology with wisdom and technology is the extension of human beings, reflecting all human beings from different places. After reading, I was inspired to create this poster, because I think photos are the media of photographers, who extend time and space through photos. Photography is also the extension of light, because photography itself is the art of light and shadow. The photographer takes photos of the time, space and light at the moment of pressing the shutter in the passing time, and finally presents the photo, which is the extension of that moment, because the photo can be preserved for a long time, while all the elements of the photo cannot be preserved.

After reading “The new typography”, I think designers need to have the courage to break the rules while following them. According to Jan Tschichold, “New Typography allows much greater flexibility in design, it also encourages “standardization”. Excellent typesetting needs to constrain and standardize the elements of the layout to make it cleaner and more organized, but in order to make the overall layout more flexible, more lively, more contrast and more detailed, we should also dare to break the shackles.

Flexible use of grids is an important aid to maintaining organized design. Josef Muller Brocjmann says in “Grid and design philosophy”, that “Grid shows that the designer conceives his work in terms that are constructive and oriented to the future.” I couldn’t agree more with him, in my design experience I think the grid is the best aid in my creation. A grid is a scaffold for a designer to organize text and images in a sensible, conscious, and natural way. It is the invisible soul that produces regularity, order and coherence, and it is often used by designers to better anticipate where information will be placed and to rationalize ideas.

The design of the program also needs the help of the grid, the relationship between the two is mutually reinforcing. Like Karl Gerstner said “if the grid is considered as a proportional regulator, a system, it is a programme par excellence. Squared paper is a (arithmetic) grid, but not a programme.” Grid provides a better design framework for program design, and program design selects different grids through different information resources.

The art work I want to discus about is the movie poster of the movie “Parasite”. This piece was designed by UK artist Andrew Bannister, 2019. The reason why I choose this poster is that I find the designer skillfully uses spatial structure and bright contrast colors to highlight the theme of the film. It reminds me of what Lissitsky mentioned in his article “Our book”, that “In the same picture frame a three-dimensional physical space has been born, for the maximum development of the fourth dimension, living movement.” In this two-dimensional poster, I feel the vitality and social class of the three-dimensional world. This is one main point I want to talk about in my paper.

According Herbert Bayer’s “On Typography”, he states that “Typography is a service art, not a fine art, however pure and elemental”. I couldn’t agree more. I think the main purpose of typographic design is to coordinate visual information. In order to let the audience see the point they want to convey in the information more intuitively, have a better understanding, and bring convenience to people’s life. In typographic design, designers sort out the primary and secondary relationship between images, texts and other elements, adjust the balance of information distribution, and then adjust the details and carry out appropriate decoration to achieve the balance of all elements. The layout is clear and organized, highlighting the theme, and achieves the best effect of conveying information. In my opinion, typography differs from art not only because it is a service, but also because typography is a comprehensive skill that integrates art and technology. It brings life and energy to information and it is the very important and unique part of design.

Discussion 4b – Xiaofei Wang

Language is powerful, a manifesto on the one hand is to strengthen the concept of designers, on the other hand, positive language can give people motivations. As long as the content of the manifesto can motivate designer themselves, for instance, Mies, the famous architect, once put forward the concept of “less is more”, and his subsequent design works also contain this concept, and constantly restrain himself and improve himself.

My manifestos are:

-Good design works should be based on the premise of making people’s lives happier.

-Design comes from life, details determine quality, designers should stand in the perspective of enjoying life to create.

– Design is the process that designer let art reasonable being integrated into daily life.

Week#3 Response – Xiaofei Wang

According to these three articles, the three artists expounded their common views on art in their different ways. They state that the relationship between art and society is very delicate. Art reflects the reality of society. The development of society promotes the progress of art, and the progress of artistic thought also directly affects the development of society, which can be said to complement each other.

In article “Who we are”, the author state that “previously-Engineers relaxed with art, now-Artists relax with technology”. Constructivism emphasizes the understanding of the basic elements of things, reflecting the process of the change of the times and the deepening of social understanding of art and design. It also reflects certain social ideology, and has a close relationship with the political economy, culture, art and other aspects of the society. If art really wants to succeed, it must actively explore the inheritance and development of national culture and art and go to the world.

In “Our Book”, Lissitsky also uses several good examples as arguments to prove that the invention of art is a confirmation of social development. Like Photography technology, it carried out under the premise of social change and scientific and technological progress. From daguerreotype to the development of digital photography, from the early film storage mode to today’s savings card storage mode transformation, from the early lens irreplaceable to the present multi-lens replacement mode of cameras, it can be said that the development of photography technology is inseparable from the progress of society and the promotion of science and technology.

At present, the futurists’ celebration of war is a bit radical, but this kind of thinking is also the expression of the spirit of courage to resist everything. They express their hatred of old ideas, especially old political and artistic traditions. At the same time, it also expressed a fanatical love for elements such as speed, technology and violence. Cars, airplanes, industrialized towns, etc. are alluring in the eyes of futurists, as these symbolize the conquest of nature by human beings through technological progress.

Overall, the power of art in the process of human society is manifested in history. In any social form, art always deeply affects its ideology, guides the development and progress of the entire humanistic thought, and objectively affects its social prosperity.

Discussion 3b – Xiaofei Wang

This advertisement I chose is for BMW electric car. The whole advertisement has a relaxed and humorous style. The first half of the advertisement uses Zeus’s ability to manipulate electricity to help others as a foreshadowing, and the appearance of the BMW in the second half plays a very smooth transition. Throughout the advertisement, the special effects of electricity are highlighted, and Zeus helps others to reflect the convenience and importance of electricity in people’s lives. Although the entire commercial is only one minute long, the shots, soundtracks, and special effects from the beginning to the end all give me the feeling of a superhero movie. The BMW’s appearance in the two-thirds of the ad, in the 41st second, is also just right. In the last 20 seconds, the design of the car and the characteristics of the tram will be fully displayed, so that the audience will not feel boring and aesthetically fatigued, and even after the end of the advertisement, there even will be a feeling of not enough. Overall, the lens language, actors’ gesture, actor’s lines and the graphic language were all combined well to each other to supported the selling point of this electric car.

Week#2 Response – Xiaofei Wang

Language is the combination of the image of things in the mind and the sound made by people when they speak. It’s the concept and sound image. According to Saussure, the two elements are intimately united, and each recalls the other. Language is the way of communication passed down from generation to generation by human beings. It is the product of historical forces. Different languages are also symbols of different nations and cultures. It is the bridge between people and the cornerstone of the development of human society.

In modern graphic design, in addition to traditional language, symbols also bring convenience to people’s lives. Because the symbols themselves have specific meanings and cultural connotations, the symbols after being matched and recreated by designers then have formed a brand-new form of visual language – symbol language. Different from language, symbols are a single element, and the formation of symbolic language is that designers combine the symbols of different elements to obtain another meaning that they want to express. For example, road signs, warning signs, bathroom sign etc. Symbolic language has long been seen everywhere in our daily life.

Both traditional language and symbolic language play a very important auxiliary role in the design. For designers, language elements are like brushes in the hands of painters, and they are the best creative tools. Designers use different language elements and combine them with other elements to transform into a more diverse work. To transmit information in people’s lives, thereby promoting social development.
