Week 7

“Medium is the message” by McLuhan caught my attention. At the beginning of the article, it was mentioned that our current media and electronic technology have changed our life and everything around us.

They also mentioned how the child absorbed this knowledge. He mentioned that “The alphabet, for instance, is a technology that is absorbed by the very young child in a completely unconscious manner.” When we say something to the child, the child automatically thinks and acts in a certain way.

The media is like daily life to us, we will discuss some topics we see anytime, anywhere. A medium is a great place for designers to get the latest information. And we can also communicate our ideas with other people we don’t know through the medium.

I saw a Chinese illustrator on social media who often posts his latest paintings on social media. He published many paintings about current affairs. He will express the recent major events in the way of painting. It includes economic issues, war (military), technology, public opinion, and other issues.

Response#4

According to Gropius, art and education in the past lacked communication with community life. Many people at the time were studying art, but not all of them were successful as artists. The campus will only teach the skills of painting, and will not teach everyone how to have the talent to become an artist.

Typophoto is a combination of typography and photography. In László Moholy-Nagy’s article, “Typography is communication composed in type. Photography is the visual presentation of what can be optically apprehended. Typophoto is the visually most exact rendering of communication.” Combining photos with text typography creates a better visual effect. Make boring text less boring and better convey information to readers.

In the third article, Herbert Bayer, a graphic designer, argues that typography is common to all of us, but has always been seen as a design or art form. Bayer thought the old typography style was too complicated, so he tried removing the serifs and simplifying the typeface to make the typography simpler and easier to read. Sans serif fonts were popular at the Bauhaus.

The reason why Bauhaus thought is updated in the 21st century is because it is updated according to the changing world. They will be improved according to the combination of experience and theory gained.

Discussion#4

I think the manifesto for design is this:
Confidence – We need to have enough confidence in our designs. Plagiarizing other people’s work is also an act of not being confident in your own design.
Accept Criticism – Certainly not to accept excessive criticism, but to accept criticism that you think is justified. Properly following other people’s advice will make your designs better and better.
Love what you do – It is important to love what you are designing and what you are doing. If you don’t love it then why do it? If you don’t love what you do, that thing won’t make sense to you, and it won’t be a good product to love.

After reading these articles, these authors have unique values for the future of art. These artists also imagined the future of art, where art will be stronger and more perfect than what we imagine in our minds. In their eyes, technology has an important position to shape the future of art and everyone.

I think the relationship between technology and art in WhoWeAre makes a lot of sense. Engineers used to draw to relax, but now designers have made their work easier because of technology. But as El Lissitzky said, over time and technology changes our art slowly combines with technology to invent new design styles. But this makes our design slowly become mechanized, and we also become lazy and rely too much on technology. Technology is our nemesis, but it’s also a tool we need right now. But technology does not have the same thinking brain like us. They will only help us achieve the style we want through our instructions, like slaves. Perhaps because we were born in an era full of technology, our design and art are inseparable from technology. But while using technology to accomplish art, we also need to make ourselves progress, or one day we will be replaced by technology. Not only in the design industry but also in many other industries such as existing robot chefs, drivers (autonomous driving), sweeping robots, etc.

Discussion#3

I chose the ad from Cue Health. Because of the current epidemic, this ad made me feel very interesting and made me want to buy it. A lot of advanced modern equipment appears in the video. For example, smart surveillance cameras in the kitchen, smart speakers, sweeping robots, heating, and mobile phones that communicate with us.

The ad introduces the protagonist, Cue, through the mother-son conversation “Andy just in tested positive, Let’s do a Cue test.” “Okay”. Enlarging the screen through the smart surveillance camera gives Cue a close-up view and asks questions, and then the smart speaker speaks to ask similar questions for Cue to answer and introduce himself. The surveillance camera rebuttal gave Cue an opportunity to prove and introduce her capabilities. The words of the sweeping robot represent the results everyone wants to see. When Cue said “Don’t worry, I got this”, the test results were quickly transmitted to the mobile phone. This also proves his detection speed. Finally, there is a picture of the heating being turned on, which also represents a warm welcome to the new family members. The designer uses the conversation of smart devices to introduce this product as if these smart devices are also part of the family, which is also telling everyone that we are now in an era full of smart technology. And this new device, Cue, has also brought convenience to our life during the epidemic. There is no need to wait in line for testing outside in the cold weather or queue up sweating profusely in the sun, and it can also prevent testing during the test. Cross-contamination occurs during spot detection.

Response#2 Chaochao

After reading two articles, I understand the role and importance of signs. Signs can be seen everywhere in our lives. They can appear on warning signs prompting drivers, or they can be signs at the door of the toilet to distinguish between male and female toilets. The sign allows us to understand the message to be conveyed faster and better. Even people who don’t speak the local language can know what the sign represents. When foreign tourists see a sign with a little man in a skirt and a little man in pants, it must mean that the toilet is there. Or the aircraft logo represents an airport or an aircraft. Forks and knives represent the direction of the restaurant. These signs are universal signs, which can help us communicate without language barriers. Even if you are in a different place, you can have a good experience.

Language is the tool we use every day to communicate. There are many kinds of language, not the languages of different countries, but sign language, body language, Braille, pictures, numerals, musical notes, and expressions. I’m not sure if Braille for the blind and sign language for the deaf have different meanings depending on the country, but signs like the emoji we use every day and some toilet signs we see are globally consistent. The appearance of symbols and icons allows us to express our emotions more easily and better. For example, when we were chatting on our mobile phones in the past, we could only express our mood by typing. But now we have emojis that we can send to represent our mood when we have a conversation.

In fact, our ancestors used icons and symbols to communicate and record what happened long before there were words. The icons and pictographs of the past may have looked very different from our present words but the meaning remains the same. If you go to see how Chinese characters in the past have evolved from oracle bone inscriptions to the present, they still have a similar appearance to oracle bone inscriptions. We develop words in order to better and more completely express what we want to express. Although icons can replace some words, they cannot summarize all the words to write a composition or report.

Discussion#2 Chaochao

What is design? For me, design is about creating the message I want to send to people. Design is also a language, we can meet different people through design. Although our languages are not the same, we can be connected because we like the same art design, and we can also be appreciated by a person or appreciated because of a design. Of course, some designs contain characters or designs that are unique to some countries. Maybe people from other countries don’t understand some small details, but everyone will understand them with a little explanation. Good design is appreciated in any language and in any country. If there is a bad design, I think what constitutes a bad design is that it conveys a negative message, or that it is copied from someone else’s design. Design is never good or bad, everyone’s designs are unique and contain their own style. Only the impact of design on society can judge the quality of design. Designers should convey correct and positive information in order to bring good development to society.
