Lab: Week 7 – Global Corrections

Select one photo from the four selected by your group from your midterm project that you think will benefit most from adjustment in Lightroom. Using the Lightroom Workflow detailed on today’s class topics page, adjust your photo.

Make a post and include the before and after versions with a screen shot of the Lightroom settings you used and a short description of how you improved your photo.

Lab: Week 6 – Motion Blur

When working with a cameraphone, there are many apps that can help simulate the look of motion blur. These apps don’t actually allow you to use a long exposure but instead take many shots and merge them together.

If you have an iPhone, download and try:

Slow Shutter Cam $1.99 or one of the free alternatives such as Slow Shutter Fast Cam

Android: Long Exposure Camera 2

Using the motion blur capture mode, experiment with blur strength and shutter speed. Keep the ISO low.

Create an image where the background is sharp but you or someone else is moving through the shot.

In order to do this, use a tripod or prop up the camera. Use the timer.

Post your photo with a short description of what you did to achieve the effect of motion blur. Include what app you used, the settings, and ow you secured the camera.

Terms

Aspect Ratio-the proportion of the width of the image to the height of a 2D image

Clipping-the intensity of the light falls outside of what can be recorded by the camera and there is a loss of detail.

Color Profile-the data for a digital device, such as a printer or monitor, which describes its gamut, or range of colors. Used to match the gamut from one device to another.

Exif Data-information stored by the camera in the file.

Gamut-range of colors

Histogram- a graphic representation of the tones in an image. A spike of data on the left side indicates underexposure, on the right overexposure.

Neutral Value-RGB values are equal or gray

Non-destructive Editing-adjust the image without overwriting the original image data. Instructions are written to a sidecar file that tells the software how to interpret the image.

White Balance-the setting that adjusts for the color temperature of the light and that will make a white object appear white or a gray object a neutral value

Global Corrections

Global corrections adjust the entire file. In Lightroom classic, this includes everything in the basic panel: White balance, Tone and Presence. In the Lightroom/Photoshop App, it includes the controls under Light, Color and Effects.

Using the Histogram

The histogram is a graphic representation of the tones in the photograph. It is a guide to exposure decisions. Most images look best when there is a full range of tones from black to white in the image. But there are no iron clad rules.

Below is a terrific photo shot by Bryan Rodriguez. The expression of the card player is perfect and you can feel him making a decision about what to play.

Looking at the histogram, we can see that most of the tones are dark. There is no true black or white. To raise the contrast of the image and use the full tonal range, use the following adjustments:

  • blacks slider to the left until the data hits the left side of the histogram
  • whites slider to bring attention to the right until the date just touches that aide
  • shadows slider to +50 add detail to the dark areas

In this photo of the pier in Coney Island, the histogram shows that is underexposed. But we also know that it is an evening scene and that there is nothing in the photo that should be bright white.

A few tips for Lightroom Mobile:

  1. To access the histogram, tap on the image with two fingers. If you can’t really see the histogram background, brighten the display.
  2. To see the image before your corrections, press on the image.

Lightroom Workflow:

  1. Classic: Lens corrections and Transform panels. Correct lens aberrations and Transform, rotate and straighten.
    App: Optics, geometry.
  2. Classic: Crop. Left below the histogram. Keep the lock on to maintain aspect ratio.
    App: Crop
  3. Classic: WB on basic panel – Set white balance.
    App: Color
  4. Classic: Exposure section on basic panel – Read the histogram to set exposure. Most images should have the widest possible dynamic range, meaning that there should be data across the entire histogram.
    App: Light
    Both:
    a. Exposure slider-use to adjust the overall tonality
    b. Set black point-shift double click.
    c. Set white point-shift double click.
    d. Use shadows slider to brighten mid tones.
  5. Classic: Presence section of basic panel – Adjust clarity (mid tone contrast)
    App: effects
  6. Classic: Presence section of basic panel – Adjust vibrance.
    App: color
  7. Classic: Presence section of basic panel – Use saturation with care: +10 at most
    App: color
  8. Classic: Detal panel – Sharpen-amount at least 50
    App: detail

Portrait of a place-Select a park or playground near you. Photograph there at different times of day to capture the place and the people who use it in a series of 8 final photos.

  1. 40 photos in an album labeled Shoot 1 on Flickr due Oct 20th at 8am:

Portrait of a Place-Shoot in your location at 2 different times of day and or in different weather. Your shots should cover a wide range of approaches: long shots to close ups, people including at least one person in motion, animals and plants. Each photo should use light and composition in compelling ways.

2. 40 Photos in an album labeled Shoot 2 on Flickr due Oct 27 at 8am.

Portrait of a Place – Shoot at your location at different times of day and weather.

3. 8 final photos adjusted in Lightroom in an album labeled Midterm on Flickr due Oct 27th at 8am.

4. A brief presentation to the class of your project on Oct 27th.

Lab: Week 6 – Exploring Shutter Speeds

Work by a window.

Use the Lightroom Photoshop App to shoot with.

When in the camera portion of the app, select Professional.

Reverse the camera.

Set the timer to 2 seconds. (Find the timer under the three dots on the right.)

Under Sec, you can set the shutter speed.

Take a series of photographs of yourself throwing up a small ball or object at a range of shutter speeds.

Start with a 2,000 of a sec. You will need to experiment to get the coordination. Once you get something where you can clearly see the ball and your hand frozen in motion. Then try at 1/640/sec, 1/100/sec, 1/30/sec, 1/15/sec

Under Edit>Info, you can find the shutter speed and ISO at which you shot the photos.

Post your 5 photos in order of increasing shutter speed from shortest to longest with the settings for each photo in the caption.

Include a short response describing how changing the shutter speed and the corresponding change of ISO effects the photo.
