  • Generate 5-8 research questions on the topic to guide your research. These questions should be questions that inspire your curiosity, drive your interest on the topic and will help you narrow down your research. 
  • Read “Freewriting Exercises” by Peter Elbow and discuss what to include in a free write– do a free write
  • Discuss what type of sources might help answer your research questions

  • Review your research questions! Write a thoughtful response to these questions. Spend some time on this– because this will serve as the first draft of the introduction for your annotated bibliography!
    • Why are you interested in this question?  (Feel free to talk about your own personal experience with the topic, or to tell an anecdote about your experience with this subject matter) 
    • What do you expect to find in your research? (Why do you expect to find this?)
    • What will you do if you find information that goes completely against what you had expected to find? (Will you throw it out? Will you write about it anyway? Will you challenge your own assumptions?) 
  • Explore the elements of a Reflective Annotated Bibliography and practice with a class text
  • Learn HOW to research. Model how to find sources. Begin to find sources. 

Homework

  • Find your 3 sources for your topic. Remember, the sources must be in 3 different genres. Add your sources to OpenLab.

  • On Wednesday, you will be briefly presenting your research with our class. You will create a short oral presentation on your research. The presentation can be the summaries you write and a brief explanation of how you found the sources or something you found interesting in one of them! Just whatever pops out at you that you think the rest of the class might find interesting!

Read “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan, write a response to the questions on OpenLab.

    • What did you think of this text? Explain!
    • What is it mostly about? Write a 2-4 sentence summary. Be specific. Refer to the text itself. Use quotes even!
    • What is the genre of the text? What is the tone?
    • Amy Tan writes, “Recently, I was made keenly aware of the different Englishes I do use.” What does she mean by this? What different “Englishes” does she use? When does she use them?
    • What does Amy Tan mean when she uses the term “mother tongue?”
    • What was Amy Tan’s perspective on her mother’s English as a child? How does it change over time? What influences led to her shift in perspectives?
    • Why do you think Amy Tan wrote this article? Who do you think is her intended audience?
    • Think about your relationship to the languages in your life. Describe at least two different languages or forms of language that you use either in speaking or writing. For example, when you text or email vs. when you speak. Or when you speak to a family member vs. a friend. Or a professor vs. a friend. Does it change depending on your audience? How? Why?
