Analysis and Personal Reflections of Wit ( the movie )
The ”Wit” movie is so real and emotional that one cannot escape the impact .My
perspective after watching the movie was like, could this be happening in hospital setting.
The movie centered on death, dying, clinical trials and DNR. The movie portrayed the
relationship between the patient and the health care providers as one to really call into
question/ poor. The doctor gave the patient cancer diagnosis news and jumped into telling
her about the experimental research protocol.
The patient was not allowed or given time
to access her options. The doctors also showed detachment with the patient during the
round . Several times in the movie were shown when the /patient concerns were either not
acknowledged or was neglected. The patient was made to feel helpless for the ailment
that has befallen her. The role played by the nurse shows the working relationship, being
patients advocate in health care. Nurses are always by the side of the patient to develop
lasting relationship. The patient emotional care have been missed by the doctor , but the
nurse was the one that showed listening ear to know what the patients last wishes were as
regards to end of life care.
The nurse did a great job but, there was a time she missed it by discussing with the
resident doctor about the patient in her presence. The nurse should remember that the
patient may not be talking, or opening their eyes or be aware of their environment but ,the
last thing to stop functioning in human body is the hearing. I also think that the nurse
would have done a better job, making known the patients request regarding end of life to
everyone that was caring for the patient earlier. The documentation for the end of life was
not properly communicated. There is room for improvement in the way care was
delivered to the patient. What was important to the patient was her identity.
She struggled from the time she got the news to be in control , but she felt frightened because her body was being ravaged by cancer and she felt vulnerable. The troubling thing to the patient was how care was being administered to her . A lot of times she had to repeat her name to the care givers. she felt just like a specimen that is being used for study. What is
important in nursing education at any level for the nurse is to deliver patient centered care
and to understand the field i.e. what nursing is all about .Nurses will be able to deliver
patient centered care, by always be aware of self and be sensitive to the patients feelings
at all time. There are ways we could change our practice in order to address this
deficiencies.
The healthcare providers could do a better job by developing a more
significant and intimate relationship from the beginning when the patient is told of their
predicament. This is not the case in the movie because , it was until the end that the
intimate relationship was developed by the nurse and the patient. Nurses get to know
their patient with the kind of environment they create. To know your patient and deliver a
good care you must show respect, patience, empathy, be available , and have a listening
ear. Our current nursing practice is still not at its best. Education and training is what
nurses need in order to be able to take up challenges encountered in our day to day
activities.
