ABOUT THIS PLAY
Introduction by Prof. Rachel Gertzog

This piece was written and translated by the students of ESOL 021W: Intermediate / High Intermediate Second Language Writing. They speak Burmese, Thai, Nepali, Russian, Uzbek, Tajik, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Arabic, Bangladeshi, and French. They wrote their parts in their native languages, some into two or three languages.

They then performed it at International Mother Language Day, a City Tech favorite annual event. The United Nations General Assembly originally adopted this day to “celebrate and promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity, and multilingualism. Its mission is to preserve and protect all languages used by people of the world.”

This year’s celebration was an excellent opportunity to showcase the linguistic and cultural diversity, and academic excellence of these collaborative, creative, and motivated students. They enthusiastically selected their roles in Little Red Riding Hood, and performed with pride and elation. How fortunate the City Tech community is to have students who are willing to share their native linguistic treasures with us.
