Reading Response 9-MA

Modernism is the rejection of the Victorian era. Modernism rejects the past and experiments new ways of art. Modernism peaked in the 1960’s. Modernism experimented with form, technique and processes. Modernist believed they could find a way of reflecting the modern world. Shortly after came what is known as post-modernism which contraty to modernism, was sceptical and a suspicion of reason. Something these eras share is the ability to push boundaries. Modernism rejected the past and post-modernism pushed it further to say anything goes.
Conceptual art was important during postmodernism, it proposed that the meaning or purpose behind the making of the art was more important than the art itself. Conceptual artists also believed that anyone could make art and anything that has been created is considered art. They rejected the idea of high and low art and believed art was simply art.
We are still in the era of post-modernism as their beliefs and ideologies are still widely accepted. Post-modern art is considered to be more liberal than modernist art. Post-modern art expanded with the technological growth in America. Artists had endless boundaries and less restrictions. The creation of art was so tangible that nearly anyone could create. I believe that is still and even more true today.

Modernism showed the wonderful time when simple geometric shapes are the basic of design and mostly focus on technology. Interesting fact to be noted from here is technology adds to beauty where using space in architecture where light air can pass for ventilation and in print design the blind spots, color psychology and shapes, the use of typography and simplicity are the key factors.

Mostly, Modernism is characterised by dazzling experimentation, perplexing narrative and poetic form and often contradictory aesthetic and ideological tendencies. The desire to ‘Make it new!

Simply can be identified by the era of art where new ways of experiment and collective approaches can be seen more than any other time. The result was obvious, coming up with bright, simple ideas like Bauhaus school and alumni student and more practical thought introduced with aesthetic.

Postmodernism is a society net which formed its own life forms. The period when west civilization entered a dark period since 1875 is called a postmodern period. Postmodern societies do not foresee the freedom of mind, they defend local culture; they are formed of civil societies. Postmodernism is a reaction against being modernism global in knowledge, mind and values. It internalizes the aim approach in the realist ideal and has been the aim of society’s values. Postmodern societies corrupts all rules by third learning, they leave all their behaviours.

There are some basic of postmodernism that still make an impact in today’s society, like photography, body art, graffiti art, and video art. Art is everything and everywhere. With our prior attention, it can be detected what? why? and how is persuaded and what is the reflection of the art.

After the postmodernism era, artists started taking art differently. Technology was growing, and so was how we were making art. During the cold war, there were a lot of new music bands that started creating album covers for their discs. Graphic design artists started creating the design for the covers. These artists felt free to do art in a way that wasn’t done before. They felt free to do art however they wanted instead of following any ideology like the Bauhaus. They could do any art they wanted and, since it was new and innovative, people would like it. However, nowadays this is not the case because artists have to be very careful with the art that they make, because if they make a mistake their careers would be over. Because of this, I believe that the postmodern era died when social media became a thing.

Modernism and postmodernism both were important parts of design that brought a new age of design and changed how it is done. For modernism, it was the experimentation in the arts which allowed new ways of doing art to be born. Postmodernism, it was giving designers the freedom to design in any way they wanted to.
As stated, there were many changes brought about by modernism and postmodernism. It is also known that there were many elements of modernism that were brought to poster modernism. One was the use of multiple art styles and forms in the artwork to create new works of art. Another element was the idea of not having a single them within the art put multiple ones. Another element was the use of dark and light colors in the artwork to create it. Those were the elements from modernism that were used in post-modernist styles.
Postmodernism many elements of it are used today in design work. One is the use of text as an art element within the design. Like having the text look or placed in a certain way that fits with the design. Another element is the use of old art styles within new designs. Such as the use of the style of an old painting to help create a new artwork such as how the painting looks or the colors being used can be put inside a new design to help make it look newer. The final element is the freedom of the artist to express themselves in any way they want to. These are some of the elements that helped to make postmodernism what it is and are some of the elements that still exist today.
As with most things both modernism and postmodernism ended paving, the way for new art ages to begin. Modernism, lasted 10 years going from the 1950s and ending in the 1960s. Postmodernism started in 1970 and ended in 1990 lasting for 20 years. As of now, we are living in the contemporary age of art which was started in 1945. Contemporary art usually is about the ideas and concerns of the artist. But just like most ages of art both may be gone but both have left behind their ideas and principles of art for people to learn from and use if they see fit. Making so even if both these ages of the art have ended they still exist today.

Postmodernism is the era that followed during the 1960s and 1970s after modernism. It was the era in which technology was evolving, new musical genres were introduced and the Cold War had just ended. It was a time period to move on from. As new music was in the making, album covers became an interesting way to show art during this era. Postmodern art wasn’t as traditional as modern art. It was more free and open to come up with a design without the possibility of getting hate from the public like in today’s society. Now a days, every design has to be examined in depth in order to avoid their design to be targeted by a certain type of group or individual. Postmodernism can still be seen as a continuation of modernism because everything during this era is evolving. The same principles are being used, however, they are being exaggerated and are more creative with the designs.

There are some elements of postmodernism that still continue today. These elements still make an impact in today’s society. Elements like photography, body art, graffiti art, and even video art still make a positive impact in this era. As era’s change, everything starts to evolve and new ideas are shown in these types of artwork. In today’s era, everything can be considered art; like sculptures, paintings, buildings, even a toilet in a museum can be considered art. People are much more open minded than in previous era’s. There is so much diversity in this era that it is shown in artworks. With that being said, I believe we are still living in the postmodernism era due to the amount of artwork I have seen in the past years. Whether these artworks are shown in museums or on social media. There are new artworks every day.

By the mid-’70s modernism seems to have run its course. The philosophy of rationale, objective, and design didn’t answer the needs of a generation interested in self-expression and intuition. Graphics designers began exploring ideas such as decoration, pop culture, and historical classical forms. The term applied to this is postmodernism. Rejecting the tenets of modernism, form does not follow function, design can be expressive and ignore the function, and we can appropriate elements from anywhere. Typography can be self-referential and have alternative meanings. Postmodernism is an approach that attempts to define how society has progressed to an era beyond modernity. It has developed from a provocative architectural movement in the early 1970s and rapidly influenced all areas of popular culture, including art, film, music, graphics, and fashion. The overthrowing of purity and simplicity in favor of exuberant color, bold patterns, artificial-looking surfaces, historical quotation, parody, and wit, and above all, newfound freedom in the design of modernism existed within postmodernism during the 1970s-1990s. Many modernists considered style to be a mere sideshow to their utopian visions; but for the postmodernists, the style was everything. Open the doors to a wide variety of design movements to follow, rejecting functionalism, embracing personal expressions, mixing media, and appropriating forms from different time periods became components of the postmodern movement and dominated design in the 1980s.

Reading Response 9 – MD

Modernism is the rejection of the Victorian era’s traditions and the exploration of the industrial age. Stretching from the late 19th century to the middle of the 20th century, Modernism reached its apex in the 1960s; Postmodernism, however, describes the period that followed during the 1960s and 70s. As a philosophy, modernism holds logic and reason as central values for seeking universal truth. However, post-modern art rejected the traditional values of modernism, instead embraced experimentation with new media and art forms, including intermedia, installation art, conceptual art, and performance art. Post-modernism can be seen as a continuation or an extension of modernism, thus adapting or keeping a few elements from the previous era. Both epochs can’t be decreased or minimized to a single art form or style, nor can they be reduced to one single theory.

Because of the creation and establishment of mainstream technology, the effects of postmodernism are at its peak. Refusing to recognize the authority of any single style or definition of what art should be; it is an era that opens the door to creative freedom and emphasizes the diversity of human experience and multiplicity of perspectives. Promoting an eclectic, colorful style of architecture, decorative arts, and using new artistic forms enriched by video and computer-based technology. Postmodern art movements have been created and some are still present to this day; some examples are: Pop Art, Word Art (Text-based Painting), Conceptual Art, Video Art, Minimalism, Photography, Graffiti Art and Body Art (using the body as the “canvas”). The postmodern era is still present today because, if taken literally, the name would refer to the phase of history that comes after modernity. In today’s society, art has become subjective and artists continue to push the envelope when it comes to their designs. Whether it’s using garbage to create a sculpture or editing multiple pictures together to make something new, if postmodernism promotes infinite growth and creative freedom, then what can come after that? How are we able to expand further? What is the limit?

Reading Response 9 – E M

Postmodernism officially began on March 16, 1972, at 3 p.m. Modernism had failed, at least according to the postmodernists. Modernists worked for most of the twentieth century to create a better world based on science and universal truths. They believed that less was more. Less was a burden for postmodernists. They felt that we needed as many references as possible in order to get our own subjective conclusions.

Postmodernists were unimpressed. They believed in a variety of methods and styles. Collage, chance, anarchy, and repetition.  These were a thousand times more fascinating. The goal of postmodernists was to provoke listeners into thinking and asking questions. The blandness of the previous era was challenged by post-modern architecture. Postmodernism, like any other trend, has its opponents who objected to excessive decoration.

The rise of mainstream media truly contributed to the postmodernism take off. The world had never been more connected. For many, postmodernism was freeing, providing a dynamic, often unsettling voice for creative expression. Postmodern cinema continues to confuses, amaze, and thrill us. We’re still confused by postmodernist performers. We can’t get enough of weird postmodern art, either. In terms of politics, philosophy, and creativity, the postmodern revolution has proven to be a powerful force. Like a massive social push, it forces society to consider why things are the way they are, and why they aren’t. Still today we live in a postmodernist world where every day we see more and more of what confuses us and also amazes us.
