Final Research Project-V.L

I go into detail about prescription bottles and their bad design from the past and the current. How design and accessibility go hand in hand and how without accessibility a design is poorly made.

Love’s Baby Soft is a company from 1969–1980 that came out in 1975 with a campaign called “Innocence is sexier than you think”. A problematic set of images and a commercial let people glimpse what was socially normal to an extent for the times. An image showcasing a young girl made to cater to the male gaze while really trying to hit all the boxes for inappropriate. From props to wardrobe, it seems impossible to overlook the genuine message from the company.

Research Paper 1 – V.L

Having an extensive selection to pick from to write about, I landed on Mrs. Ringgold. After visiting the New Museum, it reminded me the author of my favorite children’s book had many contemporary and multi-media art pieces. Personally, the major attraction to me was “Woman on a Bridge #1 of 5: Tar Beach”. Going into the meaning and the background information while explaining why that is. Explaining how the artwork is broken down to symbolism, donations, denotations, and the Futurist theory.

Early education and art lacked the ability to show artists both skills and information. Unable for an artist to grasp the concepts they are learning just from reading or vice versa, unable to know the background information if the artist is just physically doing the art. Having both taught as a blend allows for a deeper understanding for the student. Language is the bridge between art and design because it’s a way of making images and art concepts blend to allow artists to put down their visions through written material. Artists now can be mindful of recording the present arts to be relevant for the future. Such as how Bauhaus’s to this day is still relevant since it has an emphasis on function before form. It’s seen and referenced from furniture to graphic design. A good example is the minimalism trend. Bauhaus began having the design world stray from ornate designs in the early 20th century to favoring sleek and functional. This is also how most ideas from Bauhaus’s ideas could remain relevant in today’s times, such as picking an idea and shaping it into a new thing. Reinventing is an easy way to go since it can always catch on as a new trend and have a unique twist to it put to it.

Filippo Tommaso Marinetti’s manifesto follows a philosophy called Futurism, which is favoring technology, anything industrial and just feeling a need to empower the youth. As well as a flat-out rejection of admiring things from the past for too long. Imagining technology as something more than linear, seeing each new generation to be bettering the one that has passed. Seeing technology as something that will always progress is something very ingrained in the present. Seeing things become only more complex as the years go by only enforces this view as true. Their view of rejecting the past poses as problematic. Looking back on history, whether in art or design, allows us to use and learn to then further improve said art and design. As for the manifesto “Who We Are: Manifesto of the Constructivist Group,” the problematic element in there is that the author cannot see art/design to work with technology. Seeing technology to be making society lazy and unable to help shape the future. For “El Lissitzky, Our Book” it is more focused on type, but one can say it applies to art/design because type is the blend of both. Not happy with his present of where type stands, but looks forward to what the future holds. Taking it as the problematic element because it makes it seem to rely on the new generation to better the current rather than find it his goal to be the one to keep adding on to it. But overall sees Art/design to work hand in hand with technology. All three value art and design but differ in opinion on how technology should be involved with it.

Language is ‌communication that lets people create their own way of speech, whether it’s slang or ‌different languages. Language has gone through an evolution, which makes it a tad harder to explain what makes a language. In the realm of design, there’re different meanings to it, ranging from coding, pictograms, or even a set of rules that isn’t able to be defined with writing/talking. Visual Design has resulted from how language is shaped designed to what it is now. Visual design comes in when language can’t be of help. Pictographs, for example, don’t use language to convey a word or phrase, but a visual. That is important for communication around the world where it’s hard to understand every language. Because now someone can go to any city and expect to see public lavatory pictograms. An example of how design can be used in non-literal devices to convey meaning in advertising could be seen in everyday life, such as Logos. Another example could be semiotics where the word or symbol could visually represent something physical but have a different meaning, such as a drawing of a white dove, could mean peace.

Warde, Beatrice. The Crystal Goblet, or Why Printing Should Be Invisible Princeton Architectural Press, 2009. Pages 39-43., Kepes, György. Language of Vision: Painting, Photography, Advertising-Design, Paul Theobald, 1949. Pages 200-221

  •  Select a design or design object created after 1971 in which the influence of the theories considered thus far can be seen.
  •  Begin with a brief description of the object, the designer who created it, and the historical circumstances under which it was made.
  • Your goal is to provide a critical examination, not an account of historical details.

“Free the air: how to hear the universe in a spider/web” was created by tomás Saraceno and began their viewing from February 11 to April 17th show at the SHED in Hudson Yards, Manhattan. The whole piece takes up a good half of the building. The structure itself is a cylinder with two floors inside for visitors to go in. The first “floor” is on the ground floor where people step inside, find a place to settle in, and can enjoy the experience from there. As for the 2nd floor, visitors are brought up to a higher level and are allowed to walk on then lay down on a web of metal rope. Visitors lay down and get to experience in full the intended meaning of the piece. Lights are turned off and audio meant to mimic spiders with nature sounds is played. The audio is able to bounce off the metal rope allowing for a more immersive experience. For years there’s been immersive art in the art world but lately, it’s been a huge trend and even considered a new art form. Having a big space dedicated to immersive art in specific is something more accessible and desirable for the public. Allowing visitors to post on social media and having themselves fully immersed with most of their senses whether it be visuals, audio, and even textures. Many companies have made it their main business such as Light House Immersive, ArtTechHouse, and Van Gogh Immersive.

Reading Response 1 – V.L

Reading the assigned text I concluded that the author was viewing Design as a very crucial part of society. With the main points of authorship, universality, and social responsibility. The author allows the reader to think of both sides of the coin, the good and the bad.Technology has made design much easier which has also brought up new issues and ideas such as “Why should designers concern themselves with unsolvable theoretical questions?”.Realistically everyone should always be concerned but for designers which is a broad term but all of which is narrowing professions that require the love of planning, art and new ideas. What distinguishes the fields of design from other creative occupations is that design is meant to allow the application to the “real” world.Allowing many people to use it to their liking and no real ” Creator” .I also thought after the reading that designers should understand the power they have and its effects towards technology. With technology allowing designers to really capitalize on designs it makes it harder on designers to not think about authorship with pouring long hours into thier work.  Its esstionally a job of a designer to think about adding to the world of design as much as they want to “leave a mark” be the creator/owner of a certain idea.
