Research Paper 1 – JA

My Research paper is all about the Pride Flag that was created by an artist and an activist named Gilbert Baker. He was approached by an old friend of his Henery Milk, one of the first people who were openly gay and is an elected official in California. The Pride Flag was created as a symbol of pride for the LGBTQ community. The  USA flag was the reason it inspired Baker to create the pride flag.

Reading Response 4 – JA

For all three readings, Marinetti, Rodchenko, & Lissitzky all talked about what their own different opinions or views what they wanted in art. In the first reading “The Manifesto Futurism” Filippo Tommaso Marinetti was talking about futurism, which was an Avant-Garde movement that he created. Marinetti expressed about futurism as a rejection of the past but a celebration of speed ,violence and youth in both culture and society. In the manifesto, Marinetti declared that “Art” was just nothing but just violence and cruelty. Futurist were embracing the technological advancement as something they could resonate in the design today.

In the second reading “Who We Are, Rodchenko mention how the Constructivist was seeing technology as their mortal enemy for arts. It was trying to seek for a change in the aim of artist, going from expressing their own vision to serving the society‌. Artistic talents should be used constructively just for the benefit of the society. Rodchenko was referring to himself along with his coworkers as a worker that wears a simple jumpsuit.

In the last reading, “Our Book”, Lissitzky was discussing the depth of book arts along with the dissolution of thought-communication forms.   According to Lissitzky, “Every intervention in art is a single event in time, has no evolution… Gutenberg… printed a few books… that stand as the highest achievement in book art.” It shows how disappointing he was feeling toward development of book arts. He was looking forward to the future and how book arts development will be brought into media.

When ready, create a new post in this OpenLab Course. At the top of the

post copy and paste the following:

Warde, Beatrice. The Crystal Goblet, or Why Printing Should Be Invisible

Princeton Architectural Press, 2009. Pages 39-43., Kepes, György.

Language of Vision: Painting, Photography, Advertising-Design, Paul

Theobald, 1949. Pages 200-221

  •  Select a design or design object created after 1971 in which the influence of the theories considered thus far can be seen.
  •  Begin with a brief description of the object, the designer who created it, and the historical circumstances under which it was made.
  • Your goal is to provide a critical examination, not an account of historical details.
  • The design I ended up choosing was Hino Moto no Keko created by a graphic design Tadanori Yokoo. Yokoo wanted to embrace the pop art aesthetic that was in Japan during the 1960s. During the 1980s, He painted in an abstracted figurative style. Both psychedelia and pastiche were something he was interested in. Both of them became his signature styles in order for him to engage a wide variety of modern visual and cultural from both around the world and in Japan. This design really catches my eyes because of the amount of elements he added to this design. The first thing that caught my attention was the cat that was in the center.

 READING RESPONSE #3

  • How has language shaped design historically?

Language being used in design ‌to communicate their feelings and thoughts toward people. It helps people by making them understand the designer’s message by just looking into the designs.

  • Can visual design accomplish things that language cannot? Why?

I believe that Visual Design can accomplish things which language can’t accomplish because visual design can help with the audience understand the information in a design using different type of elements. Typography, color or even images can put an effect a designer’s work. Designer can use their visual to ‌communicate just like how a writer can communicate with their reader by using words.

 READING RESPONSE #1

  • According to this author, what role should design play in society?

The author believes that graphic designers tend to put a lot of their energies into their field when creating their work and branding themselves as maker. According to the Author, graphic designers from the 1900s would describe old artworks as “shamefully elitist and ego-driven.” In their mind, it was bourgeois and a subjective vision that corrupted society. Graphic design become a profession that subjectivity was replaced by the idea of objectivity.

  • What role does technology play in shaping design?

The role that technology played in shaping design is Technology today would put out creation, production, and distribution into the hands of the designer. It would enable bold assertions of the artistic presence. Technology today would be used by graphic designers to create and communicate through their artwork.

  • What are the most urgent problems facing designers today?

The most urgent problems we designers would be facing today is feeling of stress and fear. I would be saying stress is one of the problems that we designers would have to face because you have deadlines for your client. you feel the stress when worrying that you won’t make it to the deadline. The biggest thing I believe designers faced the most is fear. They would have the fear that their work wouldn’t be good enough for their clients.

  • How, and why, is a designer responsible for solving these problems?

It is the designer’s responsibility to be solving these problems because we are the one who creates the artwork that communicates a message to the viewer.
