HW #2: Food and Coffee in the Civil War

It is obvious the war was very difficult for the soldiers, especially with what can be provided as food. Food is what brings comfort to people especially those in dire circumstances such as war. For those men to not have a well balanced and nutritious meal means they can suffer emotionally as well as physically. I believe the Sanitary did the best they could to provide a reliable supply of food for the soldiers but what Sanderson did made the bigger difference in providing a nutritional meal that also tasted good. I admired his dedication in the changes he bought to the cooking techniques and food supplies. What interested me the most was the coffee the soldiers consumed as if their lives depended on it. They had their coffee with every meal and it was always available no matter the circumstances. I guess it’s long shelf life played a major role in its importance and availability. Coffee is also known to give a boost in energy so maybe that’s why the soldiers used it as a means to fuel themselves. Most people today can’t start their day without a cup of coffee. Who is to say the soldiers can?

Personally, I find chocolate to be a necessity. It is like water and air to me, something I cannot go a day without. When I’m feeling stressed or angry there is nothing like a piece of chocolate to make me feel better. Men should know it is a general rule for most women to expect chocolate accompanied with an apology.

Coffee is a common drink that people consume everyday. I also drink a cup a day to start my mornings. In that period, I would say coffee was considered to be a reward for soldiers, because they have it in the morning and it gives them a boost of energy. It was a big deal to the soldiers because of the uniqueness the coffee’s ability was not found in their other foods.

I agree with you on the Sanitary and Sanderson’s efforts. They showed a lot of dedication and care for the troops. I was also surprised on how much coffee was consumed as well. If coffee is such a necessity today, I can only imagine its magical effects back then.

I agree with your statement that chocolate is a good way of apologizing to women because I have a sister that says that too. Also coffee is a huge part of the average person every day, so it is a factor to consider when making the choice of giving it up over food.

I agree with you that Sanderson did a good job at showing his love for the soldiers because at that time, not much people thought about nutrition and what would be good for them to consume and not consume.

  5. Chocolate is food of the gods, especially dark chocolate and it can be addictive. And might i say good for health.

I agree about the shelf life of coffee but the soldiers lives did depend on the coffee they consumed because its properties kept them awake and improved their physical performance after many hours even when they were exhausted. It was a much needed addictive.

I also agree with Nisreen because chocolate is an essential food in most of us and would also help us to calm anxiety, hunger, and especially cold.
