Course Description

English 1101 is the introductory composition course. Its goal is to develop students’ reading, writing, and analytical skills as well as their discussion practices. By reflecting critically on literacy practices and engaging in their own, students are expected to become more nuanced practitioners of language. Students begin the course by writing literacy narratives that focus on such concerns as language diversity, orality, and language and technology. While academic discussion is important in the course, the primary emphasis is on students’ ability to negotiate multiple contexts and writing situations rather than becoming familiar with only academic language.

Course Objectives

  • We will expand our understanding about how we communicate in writing as we read and listen critically and analyze information in various genres, media and situations.
  • We will analyze how the role of the writer/speaker, the occasion/context, the audience addressed, the writer’s purpose, and the tone of the writing shapes the thoughts, ideas and assumptions expressed.
  • Use reflection and metacognitive processes to question and revise ideas we have about reading and writing and to help us transfer our new learning or knowledge to new writing.
  • Use our understanding of a variety of genres to compose genres in which we will express our thoughts and ideas and/or respond to those in other writing.
  • Extend our understanding of inquiry and research to explore topics, ideas and concerns from multiple perspectives using research questions that lead to the development of well-supported arguments and claims.
  • Be conscious of the fact that writing involves responsibility and should express fairness, inclusion and respect for diversity as we explore writing related to the workplace, school and social situations.
  • Select among new media to communicate effectively based on different situations.
