Urban Health Issues

Comprehensive Care for the Client with Urban Health Issues was one of my favorite nursing courses in the BSN program. This course focused on health issues pertaining to urban populations. In a sense, it is an extension of the Community Health Nursing course. My clinical rotation was an internship for Community Access, where a fellow classmate and I were alternating between two transitional housing facilities and conducting groups with the residents. The essential goal of the groups and the discussions was to motivate the clients to make a health behavior change, especially with tobacco use. I was able to utilize what I learned in Communication and Behavior (motivational interviewing) to successfully elicit change talk.

The program director was interested in which model we would be using to plan our groups. As a result, I wrote a paper comparing Motivational Interviewing to the Health Belief Model and the usefulness of each in smoking cessation programs. Ultimately, we used a combination of both models as the framework for our groups.
