For our Machine Design class we created a speed reducer gearbox with a 2:1 ratio from 96 rpm to about 44 rpm. We made a small fan for the output shaft. The casing/side plates are aluminum and cut on the water jet. To see the gears and other parts made from the 3D printer, click here.

Flower pattern designed on mild steel with plexiglass back to back.
Originally based off of a drawing I found using a Google search, I imported the image into Solid Works and traced the features. From there, I re-sized and offset dimensions, straightened or re-curved certain lines, deleted certain features and copied/mirror/re-sized others. After I was satisfied with how it looked it was converted to a dxf file and edited on OMAX to become cut on the water jet.
