Christopher Columbus’ account of his first encounters with the native people of the Caribbean is full of description and detail, from physical attributes of the native people he meets, to the ways in which they behave and communicate in his presence. Choose two of these descriptions. What impression of the New World does Columbus hope to give to Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain with these descriptions? Why are those impressions important to Columbus? Remember to use specific examples from the text to support your argument. Your essay should have a clear introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph. You must quote the text at least twice.

Your essay will be graded based on the following criteria:

• A clear introduction, conclusion, thesis, and structure
• Incorporating at least two direct quotes from the text, with proper citations
• Well-structured sentences and paragraphs
• Proper spelling and grammar
