Video Project

This new project will be a video project. Using your cellphone or tablet, make a video recording of someone in your family. Have them talk about their experience during this time of social distancing sheltering at home. How as this experience affected their life. It should be someone who is comfortable talking about this. If you don’t have anyone to interview, record your own experience. You will edit the video and submit it within the next 2 weeks. When using your cellphone or tablet, be sure to hold it steady or find a way to prop it so you have minimal camera shake. There are a variety of mobile apps you can use for editing or if you prefer desktop, you can use Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Rush or iMovie. See below for full details and the various options.

Video Project Requirements

Here is a list of what is expected in your video. Remember, as we discussed, the purpose of this assignment is to video a family member or roommate about their experiences being at home as a result of COVID19; or if they are considered an essential worker. Of course, they should be comfortable being interviewed. If you can’t do a family member or roommate, another option is to record your own thoughts and experiences.

    • Video should be between 1.5 and 3 minutes long and involve cutting and or editing from a longer video.
    • Video should have a title and have the name of the individual you interviewed as a lower-third, and it should end with credits—your name as director. (If you want to add other text into the video that’s fine also.)
    • Video should have music incorporated into it at some point. It can be at the beginning or at the end. However, the music should not detract from your interviewee’s answers (unless done intentionally)
    • Video should be exported as an MPEG format or MP4, as these formats work cross platform and the video should be posted to DropBox, YouTube or Google Drive and a link posted on your OpenLab site. Use the MP4 format identified in class as the best format for saving.
    • As with all projects for this class, the video link must be posted on your ePortfolio page under the section for COMD 1112 with a paragraph explaining the assignment and what you learned from doing this assignment, what challenges you faced, etc. Because this is a writing intensive class for this department, this is the piece of the assignment that will be the weighted the most heavily for this project because I’m aware this project has had less time to complete. I am not expecting professional editing, but rather your best effort as a beginner of editing, and then writing about what you learned from the process. The project is due the same date as your ePortfolio project, which is May 15.

Reminder: Your textbook covers the basic interface of Premiere in Chapter 7 of your text. It may be a little outdated since the book was published in 2015.

Below is a tutorial from YouTube for basic editing in Premiere Pro. There are many such tutorials on YouTube.

Another option you can use is iMovie which is free on your Mac. It is pretty simple to use. There is also Adobe Premiere Rush, which is not as complicated as Premiere Pro, and a mobile app is available for iOS and Android. You can find other apps in this article Best free video editing software in 2020.

Here is a YouTube video tutorial on Adobe Rush.
