Journal Entry 1: Introduction

Unity for Equality is a non-profit organization which provides community services in immigration, legal, finance, insurance, and education. We provide our services to people regardless of age, gender, and citizenship status. Unity For Equality is small because it is a new organization, but we are steadily growing. Our locations are in Long Island and Queens. Our tagline is “One Community, One Vision”, which means we want to make every community feel like one whole community. It was founded on November 7, 2016.  

Even though I am an intern at Unity For Equality, I was given the position of Public Affairs Director. On November 17, 2017, Unity For Equality had partnered with the Corona-East Elmhurst Alliance to collect canned goods, clothing and other necessities for the victims of Hurricane Maria. On behalf of Unity For Equality, a team was sent to Puerto Rico to assist in handing out the collected goods. On April 16th, 2018, Unity For Equality was honored to stand with community activists on the steps of City Hall to restore polling sites for community members to vote again in their communities in LeFrak City, Queens.

During the Summer of 2017, dozens of angry marchers took to the streets near LeFrak city apartments in Corona Monday evening after learning their long-standing polling site was to be closed. This forced voters to vote in 2 other locations estimated to be at least half a mile away. Many residents were concerned that moving the site from within the complex to nearby schools will present significant burdens, particularly for the many elderly and disabled voters who live in the complex homes to a large minority population. The residents of LeFrak City apartments were having their voices silenced. Therefore, Unity For Equality along with community activists stepped in restoring polling sites for the community, in which a lawsuit was filed and won. Recently, Unity For Equality made a partnership with the LIRR so LIRR monthly ticket holders can receive a 15% discount on Unity for Equality’s yearly and lifetime membership.  

Project 1 Final Process Book

For my Final Inked Art Project, I decided to ink the Product Illustration. At first when looking for a product to do a redesign of, I came across one of Celestial Seasonings black tea which was called Morning Thunder. The illustration on the packaging was a Bison in the field which was confusing for me. I decided that this product could use an update to better communicate Morning Thunder. The chosen idea for this illustration ended up being Ben Franklin holding out a kite with key during a storm. After going through many changes, I ended up changing Morning Thunder to Night Thunder. I think the title change is much more fitting since it was for black tea.  I had a really fun experience with the creating process of this Illustration.

For my meet the artist page, I drew myself in an anime chibi style because I think it best represents me. I had a lot of fun making this page since you can design your page however you want it. There is more to me besides what is listed above but these examples are the core for my likes and dislikes. Can’t wait to see other people’s awesome pages and I’m looking forward to the future assignments in this class.

Design in promotional items

These are some examples of designs that communicate color effectively. In product 1, the Kan-tastic beverage holder offers a wide range of colors to fit the style of a business that would use  this product in their advertising. As we see the, Tropical Hut uses a blue-green color to give a relaxed vibe to their restaurant.  In product 2, using an orangutan in the this way is pretty eye catching and gives a cozy feeling that a warm color like orange gives off. Then using a cool color like green for the headline balances the warm orange from the orangutan. In product 3, using a a yellow smiley-face for a stress ball will cause a sense of relief not only for it’s general use but yellow is used to show cheerfulness.

Previously I posted my sketches for my Visual Quote Project, so now I have my concepts done in InDesign. My quote for this project is “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together” by Vincent Van Gogh. In all my visual concepts I added in Vincent Van Gogh’s name and used colors that are similar to the colors he used in his paintings. Also I changed the background colors for each concept for more variety. In Visual Quote 1, I made the word “Great” out of the word “small” and the words themselves are small. For each small, they’re in different colors.   In Visual Quote 2, everyone is in a circle and added the word great for each person in the circle. The idea was that everyone came together by contributing to the circle and made something great. Meanwhile the the 3 guys in the bottom are contributing Vincent Van Gogh. In Visual Quote 3, I included the full quote and made it appear to be a big building project that was made by the little construction workers.
