As you start your thesis you could help show the bigger picture by presenting the thesis as a question. It is ok to start your thesis as soon as background knowledge is presented.

I research by looking up the topic presented and jotting down key vocabulary and defining it. I also highlight important information such as percentages or key facts. Reading through the whole article and actually having a sense of understanding behind what your reading.
