I first decided to pursue a career in dental hygiene during the pandemic. I was working simultaneously as a Cosmetologist for 20 years and as an International Flight Attendant For 22 years. 3 months Before Covid, I opened up my first hair salon in October of 2019. Needless to say, January of 2020, that dream came to an end.
I now had to pivot to another career. Healthcare had always been a dream of mine but never had the need to do another career until then. I did not think I could start another career and was very uneasy about going to college. I did my research and decided to go into dental hygiene. I knew nothing about this career, but I knew I wanted to help people with caring for their teeth since most of my family members had dentures. This career would be stable and I would get to educate people about their oral health and help them maintain and keep their teeth.
My time working with many patients within the program has been incredibly rewarding. Being able to positively impact the lives of patients who might otherwise go without essential dental care has been very fulfilling. From participating in community service projects to significantly improving patients’ oral and systemic health, the opportunity to give back has brought joy and happiness to my heart.
I believe my previous careers with working with the public has given me an edge in my new career. Empowering individuals to take charge of their oral health journey by sharing knowledge and promoting healthy habits is incredibly fulfilling. Whether it’s demonstrating proper brushing and flossing techniques or stressing the importance of regular dental check-ups, each patient experience feels like I’m helping to build healthier communities. It’s an honor to not only provide hands-on care but also to instill habits that foster long-term wellness.
About Me
Since I have worked with the public for over 20 years, I want to reflect in this E-Portfolio what I can bring to dental hygiene from my years of safety and customer service experience. My years as a flight attendant made me aware of any safety, health, or emergency issues that may arise and be able to act on them professionally and expediently. My years as a Cosmetologist enabled me to use the warmth, care, and ear needed for a good patient relationship.
My 4 years at NYYCT from my pre-requisites to my dental hygiene program, has enabled me to be ready for my new career as a RDH. I am very grateful for my experience at NYYCT. Combined with my prior experience, I hope to showcase my work and eventually help the public have greater smiles!
