Class Discussion: What are your thoughts on the text “Flourish”
Katie – “It seems like this was a text catered to a general group as opposed to the other texts we have read where it was more focused on your personal happiness and experience”
Daphne – “Happiness is a combination of multiple things not just one thing”
In “Flourish” Martin Seligman expands on Abraham Maslow’s ideas of well being and how there are many parts of well being and happiness is just a part of it.
Look at the Front Matter and what it makes you think of:
Fireworks – Red White Blue – Independence of USA – Freedom, Happiness
Eric – “The font of the Title is in bold and catches the attention of the reader”
While the other texts that we have been reading has been presenting itself as timeless self-help work texts “Flourish” presents itself as a new and fresh self-help text.
Positive Psychology came into the self-help in 1998 and has been a major influence on most self-help texts since its inception. There was a huge demand for research of “Positive Psychology” and found an extraordinary amount of funding and support from many.
Class Discussion: What are your thoughts on the 1st section of “Flourish”
George – “Martin Seligman establishes that he does believe in promises but when it comes to positive psychology, he is willing to make a promise to the readers, he does this to establish credibility”
VOCABULARY:
Accolades: An award or privilege granted as a special honor or as an acknowledgment of merit.
Visionary: Relating to or able to see visions in a dream or trance, or as a supernatural apparition.
Remediation: The action of remedying something, trying to fix or repair something.
Deficit: A deficiency or failing, especially in a neurological or psychological function, a lack of something.
Learned Helplessness: When bad things happen unexpectedly you learn to just give up and lose hope.
PERMA: The elements are positive emotion, engagement, meaning, positive relationships, and accomplishment
Subjective: Based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions.
Hedonism: The pursuit of pleasure; sensual self-indulgence.
HOMEWORK
Think about this quote “Well being cannot exist in your own head” for next week.
