Some definitions during class discussion about metropolis

Doppelganger: an apparition or double of a living person who looks exactly like the other person.

Germany expressionism: refers to a number of related creative movements beginning in Germany before the First World War that reached a peak in Berlin during the 1920s.

Hierarchy: a system or organization in which people or groups are ranked one above the other according to status or authority.

Utopia: an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect.

Commodity: a useful or valuable thing that can bought and sold


Plot for the film metropolis taken from wikipidia

In the futuristic year of 2026, in the city of Metropolis, wealthy industrialists reign from high-rise tower complexes, while underground-dwelling workers toil to operate the underground machines that power the city. Joh Fredersen is the city’s master. His son Freder idles away his time in a pleasure garden, but is interrupted by the arrival of a young woman named Maria, who has brought a group of workers’ children to witness the lifestyle of the rich.

As a far I saw in the movie the workers walk the same, basically all their movement wer e the same. Like if they were mentally controlling by a entity. Like a robots.

  1. Thanks Pedro for these notes. Just a friendly reminder that the due date for Response Blog #3 (on BNW chapters 1-9) is M 2/20 (not 2/28 as you listed), and that an important requirement for this blog (and all future ones) that I announced in class is including a minimum of 3 pieces of textual evidence (quotes), properly cited, with analysis? Could you update that so folks aren’t confused?

    Also, can others help crowdsource these notes, with the various scenes/aspects of the film we discussed (e.g., shift change, the importance of lighting and clothing in distinguishing the two classes of people), the notion of doubling (that we did freewriting on, and discussed later in class), etc.? Thanks all 🙂
