Getting to know Laurie Battaglia

Hello everyone! My name is Laurie Battaglia and I am a Junior here at City Tech. I am majoring in Hospitality Management. I am focusing on managing hotels and event planning. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and love it here. I am amazed by the city we live in although society has changed completely over the years. I have two sisters that I look up to. One sister is a graduate from City Tech and majored in Hospitality Management as well but her focus was being a pastry chef. Her dreams came true right after she graduated so I have hope for myself. I enjoy food, not just eating it but making it as well. I love helping people and I love volunteering for many different things. I love kids and sometimes wonder why I didn’t want to become a teacher but I guess you need a lot of patience for that. Being apart of the Hospitality Department is an amazing feeling. The second floor of City Tech is a great place to do. Everyone is so nice and welcoming and the classes are all very interesting, especially the culinary and pastry classes. I really enjoy what I do and I cannot wait to graduate so I could finally start my dream job. As of right now I work in a clothing store in park slope and I really enjoy what I do because I am still working with people. Ever since I was little, I loved interacting with others. My father worked for North West Airline which eventually went bankrupt but he is my idol. Everything about him and his work ethic is amazing. My life long dream is to either work in Hawaii or work for an airline just like my dad. I enjoy reading books, but only if they interest me. I also enjoy school but I am eager to graduate within the next year and a half. I hope we all have a great semester!

Le Guin response

The festival in omelas city is in the summer is filled with loud music and food among the streets, but why is it snow in the summer? The omela citizens sound like joyful people that have interesting festivals and believes but why are the citizens not happy anymore? They seem to function within the medieval times era yet they don’t have Nobel families to look up to nor slavery to depend on. The omela adult citizens do not believe that money and materialistic things helped you gain happiness and satisfaction, but instead passion and intelligentsia did so. I feel that the narrators mind runs wild in curiosity of how he/she thinks the city should run since the citizens are not into modern technology and trends. The citizens seem to be really shallow since they will not accept any imperfections such as the deformed child they keep locked away in a basement because they claim that by doing so it preserves the beauty that is around the city and themselves. Although they may be intelligent and passionate citizens they really do seem to drown themselves in ignorance on the well being of that child. They rather one person be shun from the outside world, treated horrible and starved and left to sit in its own waste in order for the rest of the city to live in peace and harmony. Why do they really believe that the city will be destroyed if the childish released to see the sunlight and be treated equal? I don’t understand why so many tourist who come visit the city don’t put a stop to the cruel treatment of the deformed child since it brings rage and heartache to them. All though the tourist don’t make an attempt to really stop the madness they take the time to realize that it is life and sometimes there isn’t much they can do about it. I found it interesting that some citizens that eventually go down to see the child realizes that the city they live in is no longer the place that they wish to stay in and leave without any regrets.

What’s up Classmates, My name is Arturo Santiago Gamarra, i Just Turn 20 not to long ago, I’ve lived in Brooklyn all my life. My mother’s Mexican and My Father’s Peruvian making me half Mexican, half Peruvian. This is my second year in city tech going for my bachelor degree in computer engineering. I never really liked school growing up , i never actually thought i’ll make it past high school but i did. After graduating  from high school i planned on joining the Marine Corp. but the thought of going away and leaving my mother behind wasn’t worth it so i enrolled in college. My number one goal in life would have to making my mother proud. She means more to me then my life itself. My # 1 passion in life is soccer. i just love the sport. My favorite sport team would have to be Real Madrid and my favorite player would would have to be Cristiano Ronaldo. I’ve been playing this sport since i was 6 , i still could remember my dad taking me to my first game. I’m actually pretty good at it too. I’m actually the youngest in my family i have an older sister and an older brother, who are a pain in the ass but i still love them. i would describe myself as a hard worker , an athlete, outgoing and funny. i actually like making people laugh. not to say that I’m a clown or anything . I’ve been to both Mexico and Peru. I prefer Peru better just because of the life style we live over there, is way better then the one we live in mexico. I’ve learned that in life nothing given to you if you want something you have to work hard for it. What else can i say i really hate reading my favorite books are usually the ones with the most pictures on them. Math would have to be favorite subject although this calculus class is pretty hard. I’m Not really a party person, but I’m down for pretty much everything. i believe you should live life everyday because tomorrow isn’t promise. I believe family comes first , i have 3 cousins actually god brothers that ill die for. There my ride or die people. i pretty much spend most of my times with them well when I’m not working. Money doesn’t grow on trees and my phone bill isn’t gonna pay itself. I really don’t know what else to say. i Have a 2 year old nephew , who i enjoy babysitting at times . What else i almost forgot i Love to eat Italian and Mexican food , just cant get enough of that pasta and them tacos. I believe no one one should ever be judge by there past , every one has there stories. My future goal in life is to actually be someone in life to  be remember as someone who did something with there life not no bum that never finished high school or never really did anything with their life. If there’s anything else you wanna know don’t be afraid to ask.

Le Guin

The first story I read was “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omealas” which I would say is a complicated story based on the way the people lived Omealas which at first glace is the perfect world. Ursala Le Guin used a lot of descriptive word withing this story to perfectly analyse how characters felt and the stances they felt of the perfect world. The beautiful city in which they lived in that from the outside would look like sadness didn’t exist and  nothing within is wrong. Everyone is satisfied and happy because everything is there for them even tho it might not be the latest in technology. but one thing is left to remind them what misery looks like to teach them that happiness is simple and only those who learn of satisfaction and to let go would know happiness , which is the ten year old child locked in a closet that never sees daylight. from the outside its is a city that everyone one wants to go to because everything is perfect but ones inside the true darkness is shown. They depict that with only one sacrifice is needed for the the whole city would be happy. those that chose to leave are the ones who realize that there really is no such thing as a happy and perfect world so they leave the city. In a sense this story reminds me a lot about Buddhism which is taught that letting go is all we need in order to find happiness and greed is the cause to pain. Those that are willing to let go would reach Nirvana.

The second story was “The Day Before the Revolution”  also by Le Guin this story like the first gave a lot of description of the characters. But the plot is definitely more confusing in the way the story is written. It is sort of depressing in a sense but most of it is almost like a sad story of Laia and all things she goes through. The thought that death in a sense no longer ever mattered and even to the end things are not always explained such as the reference to the flowers. But the way Laia was portrayed was that she knew when to let go and not be desperate in how certain things may turn out and just be worry free even with all the things she went through such as the death of her husband and even the though of her own death. she doesn’t like to hinder others with her problems. In a sense she knows when to be satisfied. The generation gaps of the new society don’t realize the struggles in which he old generation had to go through. So people don’t know how certain things are taken for granted.Which in most cases are true such as today how people would complain about everything bust never realized that they were already living in luxury that people in that past didn’t have or even some of people of the 3rd world.

A Little Bit of Me

IMG_20140116_130654

Hello my name is Kali Mai, I am 20 years old . My major is Hospitality management  I  am in my 4th semester here in the New York City  College of Technology.  I am hoping to get my bachelors in Hotel Management.

The reason I choose this major is because  it allows me to interact with  alot of  people of  different backgrounds and learns things I never knew before.  It also holds a key to the things i love whether its my love for food or to travel it gives me great insight of things i would like to do with my life.

Currently I work at Starbucks in Manhattan  as an Barista in hopes to not only get experience but also to learn about coffee which I have a passion for.  My Hobbies includes cooking , baking,  surfing the net, listening to music and also reading.  One of the things i wish to be able to do one day is to travel the world . I haven’t really been to much places so it would really inspire me to learn new things whether it is language, culture or history.  I like to visit places such as going to museums, and  parks just to look at the arts and scenery and even learn a few things.

I Strengths and weakness when it comes to reading and writing is the i can read really fast  but  it really does take me to have an interest in the topic for me to really want to continue on .  If its  a topic i normally don’t like i get bored of it so i tend to never finish it.  I am honestly not that great of a writer,  i have a lot of mistakes  when it comes to writing. such a vocabulary and grammar . I like tyo read in general with topics that help open my imagination to think about the storyline in  which  keeps my curiosity to continue reading in hopes for it to turn in to the way i want it to be. My knowledge for technology is a little bit higher than average because i do like to surf the net so while I do that i tend to learn a lot about things i could do whether its software or things I cud do with certain programs. My knowledge on Utopias aren’t that great i have learned about it a bit in middle school as a concept of the perfect world, a way in which everyone is seen as equals in a sense everybody almost  even look the same. On the other hand I’ve have never learned about Dystopias at all.  The reason im taking this corse is because it is  a required class as an L/A/P but this  class has caught my interest with the way we learn about the different topics in literature

An Intro to Luis Comori

Hey there!!! My name is Luis Comori , I’m 23 years old born in Lima,Peru and moved to NYC with my family when I was two years old. I live in Queens with my mom, dad, and younger sister and really can’t see myself living anywhere else . The conveniency of this city is too good to pass up on. This is currently my 4th year in this school majoring in Hospitality Management after switching from Computer Engineering. You might say ” What a crazy major switch !?!?! ” but cooking and management is an area I found more interesting. I did accomplish my associates degree in CET and I’m a HUGE techy , I love technology and all its gizmos and gadgets and have taken the computer certification exam as well- have any computer problems? Don’t be afraid to ask!!. Here’s another twist , I currently work as a Pharmacy Technician at a local pharmacy which is located two blocks from my house , talk about short commute. I started off as a stock guy and made the transition to pharmacy because of the need of a Spanish speaking person and just hit my 7th year in that store.

For fun I go paintballing with my friends and familly , and always have a memorable experience.Bowling , Video games , roadtrips and going to conventions such as ComicCon and PAX ( a more nerdy version of ComicCon , usually in Boston ). I love anime and read manga ( japanese comics ) and is probably the only reading I do. I LOVE football , Giants Fan , and baseball , Mets Fan. It’s weird to say I’m not interested in soccer at all , even though my entire family loves the sport.English , to me at least , is a very boring subject and I don’t think I have ever finished a book that I have picked up except for school purposes. But I can say that I actually learn a few things from english class as appose to other classes. I hope to learn some more in this class and apply these skills to my future career.
