HI IM VUNITA

Hi my name is Vunita Mieres, I was born in the beautiful island of Trinidad and Tobago. At the age of twelve I relocated with my mother in the United States of America. I live in Brooklyn, New York. I am the second to last child for my mother and the last for my father. I am a freshman at New York City College of Technology and my major is hospitality management. My dream job would involve customer/guests services, from working in a five star hotel resort or a front desk at a hospital or maybe if I am successful in my baking/culinary classes I can be an executive chef at a five star restaurant and if all else fails then I can be a flight attendant so that I can travel the world for free.

At the age of fifteen I worked at a dinner where I held the position as a waitress/hostess. I honestly loved the job but it was time consuming and was affecting my schooling. As of January 1st 2014 I started a new job at JFK International Airport where I hold the position as a lobby agent. I really enjoy working at the airport because it gives me the opportunity to meet new people with different nationalities, ethnicities and various cultures.

My goal in life is attain my degree to get my dream job that allows me to have the quality of life to travel the world and to spend time with my friends and family. More specifically ill like to support my current family as well as to provide a solid foundation for my future family.

In my spear time I love to spend time with my family and friends. We have a lot of activity in the house, it doesn’t take much for anything to turn into a party especially since my mother and sister cooks up a storm. My nieces and younger sister are a source of continuous entertainment, my family is very important to me and spending time with them is a big part of my daily routine. I also enjoy dancing, acting, going to the movies, listening to music, sleeping, eating, hanging out and I love to watch movies that show case relevant life lessons.

I have lived in New York City for over five years and I honestly still miss home. New York City has a lot of different things to see and to do but it still doesn’t compare to living back home. I miss the rest of my family since my father and big brother still lives there and they mean so much to me. I just miss the laid back atmosphere and the beautiful weather it has all year around and the monthly holidays that it has to enjoy. I miss going to the beautiful beaches, rivers and something simple as picking juicy, fresh fruits off the trees.

English is one of my favorite classes because it gives me the opportunity to share my thoughts and ideas. However my weakness is I write the way I speak, I will like to enhance my vocabulary and to tighten my grammatical skills. I look forward to this class challenging, my creativity and the quality of the writing I produce.

A little bit before I moved to NY, I have lived in Portland, OR(The City of Roses) for one year. It is located in west side of the US. This city calls the city of roses because it has a rose garden that located in the downtown of Portland. Also, they will have Rose Festival every year. This city having a lot of rain all year round, that is why they have a lot of roses and greenness. I love this city because it has a lot of tree. This city is a small city but have very good transportation. You can go every where without having a car. I have studied ESL(English as a Second Language) at Portland Community College for two semesters. At first, I have a plan to study Electrical Engineering at Portland State University but I was changing my mind, cause one of my friend that live in NY, invited me to come to live with him in NY. So, I decided to come to NY, and I have been living in NY until now.

My goal in my life is to be an Electrical Engineering because I just found out that, these are my favorite subjects. Also, if I have a chance to study for Master and Doctoral, I will do it.

Hello everyone

Jan_Barrie

My name is Mohamed Barrie; I preferred to be called by my last name “Barrie”. I was born and raised in Sierra Leone, West Africa. As a human, I have my ups and downs. I‘m open minded, trustworthy, reliable and persevered. Coming from a large family has thought me the qualities to listen and accept the opinion of others, humbleness and helping the needy and poor. Like most countries in Africa, my country is rich in minerals but most of it populace live in abject poverty which could be traced to bad governance and rampant corruption.  Unlike the good qualities, it’s hard for anyone to point out his downside. In my case, the visible ones are; lack of confident in public speaking, talking to strangers and too much emphasis on one thing.

I migrated to the US in 2012, since then I have being living in the Bronx. In New York, I love the environment, the people and the variety of food sold in every corner of the city.

My academic journey started back home where I did my elementary, High School and some aspect of my undergraduate program. I’m ComTia A+ certified technician from PerScholas Institute of Technology with some experience in computer networks, repairs and maintenance of hardware and software.

I am majoring in Biomedical Informatics as my passion is to work in the healthcare field with emphasis in database management or software development. With such a passion, City Tech was my first choice due to the unique program it offers within CUNY. I’m in the second semester slowly achieving my dream career with the superb help of the professors that are always available to help students in areas of difficulties backed by open minded and friendly students that will never hesitate to give their helping hands when requested. Whiles in school, I spent most of my time in the library. On Thursdays between the hours of 12:30 to 2:15, I enjoy the social activities students display. Amazingly, I have seen great talents among the various social clubs within campus. I have being meeting and talking to handful of them but yet still I’m not an active member of any. One thing I shouldn’t forget to measure as a lover of food, catch me at the canteen between 11:30 to 12:00 where I always service my stomach with the delicious and varieties on their daily menu.

My hubbies are numerous and sometimes I had to make a scale of preference to prioritize the most important ones base on the prevailing circumstance at a particular given moment. Currently, reading tops the list followed by surfing the web, listening to music, making new friends and going to the theater. I seldom go to night clubs neither do I smoke or drink but I love dancing especially when I go to parties.

In terms of social media such as facebook, tweeter, instagram, and whatsapp, I spend about 30 minutes every day chatting, reading and commenting on posts of different subjects. I look forward to make new friends in my entire stay at City College.

Introducing Zishan

Me and my 2 day old nephew Rehan. He's just the most adorable baby every and the joy of becoming an uncle is immense!

Me and my 2 day old nephew Rehan. He’s just the most adorable baby every and the joy of becoming an uncle is immense!

Hi there, my name is Zishan Shahid (Zee-shawn) and this is my first semester at City Tech. I’m eighteen years old and was born in the summer of ’95 in Queens, New York, where I’ve been raised till this day. My parents immigrated here from Pakistan and gave birth to four other brilliant children like me. I am the second youngest of the three brothers and two sisters, and I wish I was the youngest… I currently live in Jamaica Queens with my whole family and take the train to school everyday. I am currently  majoring in Mechanical Engineering Technology, however, I never thought I’d go into this field. During highschool, I really enjoyed my chemistry class and wanted to major in that field, but given that City Tech didn’t have a major in that field, I chose mechanical engineering instead, given that my dad always told me he wanted me to become an engineer. Other then that, I was contemplating joining the Air Force for quite a while and that idea is still in my mind. My dream job, however, is to become a street racer. I’ve always loved driving cars since I learned how to drive at the age of ten on a visit to Pakistan. Driving is my passion and I’d like to say I’m rather good at it (better than the majority). Besides that, I’m not a real sports guy. The Super Bowl was yesterday and I didn’t even watch that so yeah, you get the picture. The only sport I play frequently is billiards. I go every other day with my friends to shoot some 8-ball pool. I also enjoy basketball and soccer even though I barely ever get the chance to play those sports. I am a big video game fan and currently play on my PlayStation 3. I’ve always loved video games since I was a kid, first the PlayStation 1, then the second and now the third. The PS4 has also been released but given all my friends have a PS3, I don’t need to buy the PS4 just yet. Um… what else… oh yeah, I graduated as the class of 2013 from a highschool in Manhattan called East Side Community H.S. My highschool life was very dull and wild. Till this day I don’t understand how I graduated. It must be the work of my teachers because my incompetent working standard would never have gotten me to graduation. I would cut class as occasionally as I would go to them. I thought of school as a joke, and really it was, or else I wouldn’t be sitting here doing homework for college. I say it was wild because I was always doing the craziest things with my friends; cutting class, sneaking out my mom’s minivan without a driving license, and going for a cruise way over the speed limit on the highway. Now that I reflect back on those days, I’m surprised to even be alive and not crippled. However, all that is behind me now, I’ve dedicated myself to becoming a more responsible student and person. I’m eighteen and the time to slack and mess around is over. College isn’t a joke like highschool and if I treat it as such, then the joke will be on me. I look forward to this English class, minus all the writing we’re going to be required to do. Thanks for reading and now you know a fraction of who I am. =)

Hello

Hi, all. My name is Yang Yang Li. Everybody can call me Yang. I am a 100% pure Chinese from the south of the China and I can speak Mandarin and Cantonese. I am a nice guy, but, a little shy.  Three years ago, my family and I immigrated to here. Right now, I am living in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn. In addition, I am majoring in mechanical engineering.

First of all, please allow me to share a little bit about the Chinese New Year (= Spring Festival) because now Chinese people are celebrating the New Year. In Chinese’s calendar, it’s included the New style and old calendar. The Spring Festival day is count on the first day of January of the old calendar. Therefore, the Chinese New Year day changes every year. This year is the year of the horse. The most common traditional food is Dumpling which they will eat on the New Year day. Moreover, the children, unmarried people and I are extremely happy on the New Year days because we will get the Lucky Money (cash in the red envelope) from the married people and eldership. Finally, I would like to teach the most common greeting is Kung Hai Fat Choy.  This indicates may you be happy and prosperous! Kung Hai Fat Choy to all!!

Bring back to my introduction; I have one older sister and her also in college, too. I really enjoy spending time with my family and my friends. I love playing Mahjong with my grandmother, typically like swimming on the summer time. I considered myself swimming level just like fish that fast, however, my writing skill improve like snail. As a foreigner, I still have many problems on my writing, such as grammars, spellings and ideas, etc. this real makes me upset when I thinking my writing problems. Suddenly, i thinking about Michael Jordan’s maxim “I can accept failure, but I can’t accept not trying”. I like this sentence a lot. Hopefully, I can do well on the beginning semester. Also, I like Chinese food the most but not spicy, because i think if the food taste too spicy would takes away the original flavor from the food.

Introduction: Kimberly

My best friend and I. ☺️

My best friend and I. ☺️

Hi! My name is Kimberly and im colombian. I was born here but raised in colombia. I went to school there and was raised on a farm in a very small town in medellin. My major is architecture. I decited to major in architecture because as a little girl i grew up in a very destructive, not well done house. The way the house was made really made no sense so i always grew up wanting to arrange the house the way i thought made sense, and the way i thought it was supposed to be made. I now live in Queens, NY and live with both my parents and sibiling. I graduated from aviation high school. I worked on airplanes for a while and i played volleyball for 4 years. I enlisted into the marine corps and couldnt leave to bootcamp because i suffered a heart stroke so i decited to come to college, and Im now currently waiting to get healthy again to enlist in the military once again. I sit back to think of my life and i get amazed to see how many things iv gone through and been able to accomplish. Im not the healthiest person but im the happiest person in the world. Iv done many charity work,i take cloths and toys once in a while to charity. Ive donemany fundraisers for ill children..i have a huge huge huge heart and im the most sweetest person ever. Im engaged and i couldnt be happier. Michael Castro owns my heart and i couldnt be happier. I have a very big affection for animals and i love being able to help and care for them. I always thought and knew that affection and care was one thing everyone in the world needed. I dream to one day be able to built my own home for my big family and built a zoo in my back yard.

Some goals i have in life are to built many homes for families that need it,to built big schools for children who arent provided with that in life, and to built buildings that are mind blowing to the world. I sometimes cant sleep thinking about my future that awaits me. I get overwhelemed and scared at times but know that ill be able to over come it like almost everyone in the world has been able to.  I hope to close many chapters in my life and hope to open more then i thought and expected to. I feel like this english class will help me express my self in writing better and help me have a better understanding of things.

samar…

Hi, my name is Samar; I was born in Yemen and raised here in Brooklyn. I am the second oldest out of six children I also have two nieces. I am majoring in accounting hopefully when I graduate I don’t want to do tax papers I want to work at a bank.

I worked at a dentist office and physical therapy office, they were the best experience. I learned so much and it actually help me find my major because when I started college I didn’t know what I wanted to major I was thinking of being a dentist before I graduated from fort Hamilton  high school. but when I worked at the dentist office  I totally changed my mind, I knew it wasn’t  for me.

My goal in life is to make a difference starting from the smallest things even by smiling at people on your way to school, at work or even at home start from your family make them feel special and loved  it could actually change someone’s life . I once heard that a guy was so depressed and lonely he always thought no one loved him and there is no point of him living so he decided to walk the Brooklyn Bridge and if no one smiled or asked him what’s wrong he’ll commit suicide and he did he actually killed himself, helping as much as I can is what’s going to make my happy. I was actually in a group at the masque I go too. We basically use to help as much as when can. We visited people in the hospital, we went to feed the homeless people and we also raised money to help people in Africa. It was amazing.

I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, balling, ice-skating, and traveling. I want to go all around the world. I have passion for horses I hope one day I will get one. My favorite book is “gifted hands” by ben Carson. I love that book it gives hope and it shows you that it’s never too late to be better in life. I strongly recommend it. Favorite quote is “You’ve gotta dance like there’s nobody watching, Love like you’ll never be hurt, Sing like there’s nobody listening,
And live like it’s heaven on earth.”  By: William W.Purkey. This quote means so much to me it’s the definition of hope in the dictionary of my life.

About me—-> Fahmida

Hey everyone, I’m Fahmida. I currently live in Midwood, Brooklyn. I’ve been in Brooklyn for ten years now. I graduated high school in 2013 from Rachel Carson High School for Coastal Studies.

My parents are from Bangladesh. I am the oldest of my three siblings, apparently  being the oldest means a lot of responsibility. I know two and a half languages. I can speak and write English as well as Bengali and I took Spanish in high school. I have many different interests. I like spicy food, American food, and also Chinese food.I enjoy watching game shows such as: Family Feud, Jeopardy, wheel of Fortune etc… Going shopping is one of my favorite things to do. I can spend a whole day at a mall and not get tired. One of my desires is to visit Europe. If I ever do visit Europe, I want to go to the wonderful places and famous monuments like the Eiffel Tower. This is my first semester in college. I am majoring in Accounting and hope to complete college, so that getting a job doesn’t get too difficult. My long term career goal is to become a full time Accountant and work at banks. This summer break was actually pretty fun and relaxing because my family and I were out of the country and we visited some family members in Bangladesh.

When it comes to writing, I think I am a decent writer, but sometimes I get stuck which is one of my weakness. I enjoy writing on topics that most interest me because I get the freedom that I want. I know the basics of technology. I have experience using Windows, Microsoft, iPhone etc… Social media is a part of everyone’s life these days, but I think its not always safe to put personal info online even though it helps people communicate better. I have Facebook but don’t get on it as much. I hope to increase my writing skills in this course and finish the semester with a satisfying grade.

Introducing Luciano

Hey there   the name’s Luciano I come from a half Italian, half Puerto Rican back ground with very deep roots. I am a ambitious, optimistic, Respectful individual. I have a fraternal twin who name is Christopher currently serving for the US ARMY in Germany, and an older brother named Raffaele who study’s Archeology in Florida. I’m currently spoken for by my beautiful girl friend Melanie which I spend most of my free time Adventuring around NY with her and couldn’t ask for more. With me moving back up to NY two years ago after previously spending 9 well spent years in Florida, I decided to move back up. Me bring the crazy child, desired the free spirited world and all it has to offer so I decided to waste no time after Graduating high school in 2012 to begin my journey in life. I Started working in the Restaurant industry since it was relevant to my soon to be major, and I quickly realized Degree first than carrier so I Left my management position at my god fathers Restaurant in Harlem to make my abrupt decision to sign up for fall semester. I am currently living in Ridgewood which is on the boarder of Queens and Brooklyn with my Grandparents, and It’s not easy l can say that much. Writing helps me release the words I don’t get the pleasure of saying.  I consider myself a strong writer depending on my mood which is my weakness because certain days I feel less creative than others. I enjoy the freedom that comes with writing because there is no right or wrong topic, and I love elaborating on a subjects I find interesting. A few personal Hobbies I enjoy doing is dancing to Spanish music, cooking, watersports, and Camping. I also became an Eagle scout in 2012 for the 100th year anniversary of Boy Scouts of America which explains the camping. I try not to let New York’s environment suppress my scouting values, since most tend to let New York’s way of life change them. My background in using technology is vast. I have used laptops, iPhones, tablets etc.. I have Instagram and Facebook as social media outlets and I think they can benefit for communicating with others and accessibility to get collage work done but it’s also most peoples down fall because it becomes there life, Along with there being some concerns of privacy issues with government assess and all. Referring to feather questions, I’m hoping to become a stronger speller since that’s always been my weak spot even though my vocabulary seems up to par, but also looking forward to expanding it .

That’s me, last winter break, in front of a big ol’ rubber ducky (part of an art installation for a big festival) in Darling Harbour, Sydney, Australia!

I did my doctoral work at The Graduate Center, CUNY, and my current research interests are in utopian studies, happiness studies/positive psychology, composition and rhetoric, digital humanities, American studies, and the scholarship of teaching and learning (feel free to ask me what any of these areas are!).

I played ice hockey in college (right wing), and have played the violin since I was two years old (and currently play in the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra). I love Thai food (the spicier the better!), kale, & tzatziki as well as watching old sitcoms from the 70s and 80s (some of my favorites are MaudeThe Mary Tyler Moore ShowRhoda, Soap, All in the Family, The Golden Girls, The Facts of Life, & Family Ties)!

This summer I spent a few weeks wandering Scotland, and it was absolutely wonderful! I even visited Loch Ness, but didn’t get to see Nellie, the infamous Loch Ness monster …

I look forward your reading your Introductions and getting to know you, first virtually and then in person, as the semester progresses 🙂
