Reading Response 1

As I was reading ‘Girl’ by Jamaica Kincaid it was like the text was speaking to me. Throughout the text, the narrator recites the good and bad things her mother tells her such as, “on Sundays try to walk like a lady and not like the slut you are  so bent on becoming”, and ” this is how to behave in the presence of men who don’t know you very well, and this way they won’t recognize immediately the slut I have warned you against becoming”. The reason why the text spoke to me is because I grew up with a Caribbean mother and even though she didn’t disgustingly as the narrator mom, they did have things in common. My mom always has a duffel bag full of chores and things she tells me and just as the narrator, her mother insists that sings benna in  Sunday school even though the narrator said she doesn’t that’s exactly how conversations with my mom goes.
